These words remind me of the EARLY days of Punk. Anything went, there was no "look" no rules. All kinds of characters seemed to come out of the woodwork.

I have always had a crush on Kira. I'm an older geezer now at 50 so I used to listen to BF albums back when I was a teen in the 80s. And she's really cool. I remember back in the MySpace days in the mid 00s, she was cool enough to reply to certain questions I had. One of my questions was if she recalls ever playing live "Armageddon Man" from the Family Man album at a show. To this day, I still love that spoken word/punk jazzy fusion song. She replied: "You know, we never did that song live that I can recall". I would have loved to have seen 1984-85 era Black Flag lineup rocking that song live.

"Hey, dirt girl. What's up that dirt dress? Ain't nothin' but a buncha trash. Ain't nothin' but a buncha trash." Then, Stevenson mimics it on drums. Incredible. Love that song. The whole album is great, really.

Kind of the same way here. I never bought the punk uniform. Not only for the reasons K outlines, but it was also too goddam expensive to buy all that crap, and make sure it was JUST RIGHT and keep up with the weekly changes. Maybe - no, I KNOW - I'm too lazy for that

This is putting into words a thing I've been mulling over in my head for a while now. As an example, growing up, tattoos and piercings and all that were very much outside the mainstream and it felt cool and dangerous to hang out in tattoo parlors or whatever and I wanted to be covered in tattoos as a 16 year old in high school. Everybody in that scene was an outsider in one way or another and they were interesting and rad folks. But now even the police are walking around with full sleeves and your tax accountant has her ears gauged. It's cool that people aren't getting shit for how they look (wrt certain body mods anyways) but it just doesn't feel very interesting anymore, especially since a lot of these people were the very assholes giving people grief for how they looked or dressed. The squares came in and took over this sub-cultural signifier and now they all look like how my friends and I used to look and I don't want to hang out with squares just because they have a dragon tattoo or whatever.

Soooo...you're a slave to concern about looking a certain way, because a lot of other people are looking that way as well? And this is somehow supposed to be about fierce independence? Actually, this is simply another form of co-dependence. Irony, thy name is Kira Roessler.
