Thanks so much for this very fine review. I do own the Blu-ray combo edition from some years back, which included Joan Lindsay's novel, but it sounds like the 4K upgrade might be worthwhile. Do you own the Second Sight edition as well? Curious to know how the two UHD versions compare.
@letstalkcriterionКүн бұрын
I do have the second sight, it also has the Joan Lindsay novel, it is the same restoration but the encoding Criterion uses is slightly different, there has been some criticism on how it has been re-graded on 4K colourwise as it does look different to the Criterion Blu-ray transfer.

Great review Steve as always. I saw Querelle back in the early 80s. Think it was on Palace Video on VHS. At the video store i rented from it was always right next to Fitzcaraldo. I dont remember much about it but i can see where Jean Paul Gaultier was maybe slightly influenced by its visual style for his fragrance commercials. There wasnt much gay cinema back then as i remember, or not that i knew of so these kind of arthouse movies including early Derek Jarman films such as Sebastiene, we had to grab and run with. Definetely going to give it another watch as its streaming on BFI Player at the moment. Must grab a book on the history of gay cinema right back from its early days *heads on over to Amazon*. Look forward to your thoughts on Bound which ive never seen.....

Such a classic, in many ways more daring than Psycho. The recent StudioCanal 4k release of this is excellent, glad to see Criterion are returning it to their catalogue - the artwork alone is so colourful! Contrary to popular belief, this film didn't totally kill Powell's career, but similarly, sadly it also affected its leading man. Glad to see this classic shocker is getting more attention!

Yep im getting this really badly now on this player i purchased yesterday from cex.. On all my dolby vision disks.. It eventually just completely freezes and crashes back to player menu.. Resetting and using different cables and ports doesn't resolve it.. Only maybe works properly again for few hours.. Shame really as it seems like a great player but unfortunately it will have to go back..

While at UCLA, my girlfriend heard from her friend that MCCABE & MRS. MILLER was an interesting film. We drove 30 miles and saw it’s last screening on its last night at the second-run State Theatre in Pasadena. There were only 2 others in the auditorium. We were blown away. It was like seeing the unveiling of a masterpiece. As we left the theatre, a worker was up on a ladder removing the M-C-C-A-B-E red plastic letters from the theatre's marquee. Thank you Robert Altman, Julie Christie and Warren Beatty. The GF became and remains my wife. She doesn't remember that night at all.

It's a rich cinematic experience that is simultaneously quite grounded in the humdrum happenings of everyday life while transporting the viewer to another universe entirely through thoughtful visual storytelling and a kind of deification of its geographical settings.

Have you actually watched this film? Firstly, Mr Scratch is not a "stand in for The Devil", he IS The Devil. And If you do bother to actually watch the film, you'll realise that the name Jabez is pronounced Jabeth, not Jab-ezz. Likewise Stephen Vincent Benet's surname is pronounced Ben-eh (silent 't') not Bennett (as in Tony Bennett) and Dieterle is pronounced Duh-ter-luh, not Deterle. Listening to you mispronounce their names over and over again was like nails on blackboard.
@letstalkcriterion2 ай бұрын
Apologies for the mispronounciation, i did nearly go for Beneh in fact on the first recording but changed it on the retake incorrectly it seems. I will work harder on pronounciation going foward.

@@letstalkcriterion only because I now have two anasoic ub820's and after around 7 months my current one is starting to pixekate randomly on a few 4ks, just like the first player, I think it might be a laser issue, so Iam now seeing if I can get it fixed or replaced.

@@letstalkcriterion in general it's an issue across a lot of other players, especially the Sony x700 and x800, even my oppo 203 high end player would do it, albeit only on occasion, if the oppo was dolby vision compatible I would of kept that player as it was pretty amazing in terms of quality and build. The Panasonic is still a great player, much better performance than the Sony budget players but Iam really starting to think that over a short period of time it's almost becoming an issue that we are most likely going to expect, Iam really not sure the rhyme or reasons, some you tubers tell you it's all you do with how you set the players settings, many saying to turn off the 4k upscaling but it makes no difference. Currently Iam looking into a repair or a replacement but Iam not very hopeful for this to be a perminent fix as I am sure this will start to happen again at some stage.

Excellent review, thank you! I'm relatively new to buying blu-rays, Criterion included; started late in life couple years ago at age 71 and have 23 Criterion discs so far. First with Saving Private Ryan, brand new disc, 35 mins in, pixelated just like yours, i thought dodgy disc, even though i cleaned it within an inch of its life, sent it back and got a new one which played fine. That was a year ago. Had a few discs refuse to play unless i give them a spa day, a massage and a facial! And yesterday Jaws, which i have watched twice perfectly, pixelated after 40 mins. I do feel it is going to get worse!

Mubi has been around in U.S. for a few years but I never tried their free trial because only 30 movies were available, one new film each day with oldest rotating out to make room for newest addition. I didn't care for that streaming format at all. Well, just visited the Mubi U.S. website for first time in months and it appears the service now offers a lot more movies, with several interesting me, so I may try them out now. Saw Border a couple years and loved it. Under the Silver Lake looks interesting, but neither it nor Border offered on the U.S. Mubi service, but are listed in the site's "all films" library, and not the "now showing" section.......so this is confusing. Just first impressions. As far as I can tell Mubi disc purchases not available in U.S. Enjoying your Mubi Special but will have to come back later to watch when more time, thanks Steve.
