I am glad you mentioned Jim Fealy and Therese DePrez, I am always surprised he hasn't done more. Therese had made a lot of mediocre films look good. I don't really have words for why I am just not a fan of Gregg's films, the plot of I'm bored lets have a lot of sex and do crimes with very stilted acting just isn't my thing. I found it interesting that he explored bisexuality but he made it so hedonistic and icky too. On the same topic American Psycho is getting a remake, but I really wish they would do a remake of another film based on Bret Easton Ellis, Less Than Zero, the film is just a mess, I don't think anyone working on it knew what to do with it.

Had this once with my ub820 for a few seconds when playing Temple of doom. Changed hdmi cable and never returned. People need to remember its by far the best selling 4k player (for a reason) and bound to get odd issue due to the sheer number out there.

As far as I'm concerned, this is a horrible player. I purchased mine a few years ago and use it just about every week. Not constantly but light use. Defenders of this product are in denial; - an expensive 4K player should last more than a few years. My PS3 from 2010 is still playing Blu-rays flawlessly. Make it make sense!

I have a 820 as well and have the same problems. Very disappointed in my 4k Panasonic player. I've washed my discs, got a special cleaning wipe and nothing works. Maybe the blurring will happen a bit differently, but never goes away. Some 4k discs like Nightmare Before Christmas are completely unwatchable.

Nightmare Before Christmas was a disc that wouldn't play on my player either - I got a Reavon which plays everything.

I have a new ub820 does anybody have this exact problem with Spider-Man No Way Home 4K steelbook in Dolby Vision on the first 30min run it has this exact broken image with different colors but if i turn off DV on the player this movie will play in HDR10 smoothly i wanna know if anybody is having the same problem with this disc it's the first Disc i see runing at 60 to 100Mbps thats really high i wanna know if it's because the disc is taking the player to its max potential thats causing the problem

My UB-820 had a fit playing a tiny % of 4K discs we had (new Blu-rays), that was picture break up & pixellation as the Panasonic played 2 of 81 movies in our collection that are on 4K Blu-ray. With the 4K Blu-ray of "Saving Private Ryan", that picture defect occurred at 2 hrs 26 min. into the film. And with a 4K disc of the monster movie satire"Alligator", its video messed up at the 49 min. point into that flick. But going onto Home Theater Forum solved the problem with both of those 4K BDs, after a well informed guy there told me to go into the UB-820's video settings, and change the 4K60p video output setting from the 4K/60p(4:4:4) setting I used, to instead, use the 4K/60p(4:2:0) setting. That ended the freezing & pixellation that only hit those 2 Blu-rays, & both were new. The man who told me to change the output to 4K/60p(4:2:0), said that a 4K/60p(4:4:4) output setting is ONLY useful if a PC is being used with a 4K Blu-ray player. BUT, for 4K or 8K TVs, the 4K/60p(4:2:0) output setting is the BEST choice to have trouble free results playing 4K BDs. Clearly, that man was right, since after changing that setting in 2023, NONE of our 81 4K Blu-rays, including the 2 named, have ever had any trouble again! BTW, my UB-820 is used with Samsung's top 2022 85" 4K TV, manufactured in March 2022.

While It seems this and other players have problems it’s like anything that 90% players will be ok for their lifetimes(as an example)while a minority you run into issues with .People who have no problem are obviously not going to contribute overall to the conversation in the main,which then leans heavily to a viewpoint which is statistically insignificant.❤

I haven't heard anything as yet - two the the films are 4K so they are not region locked but one is Bluray and that is region A.

I must admit I watched this on release and didn't really get it 🥴 I'm a huge fan of Monty Python and Terry Gilliam and after seeing this great review, I think I might give it another shot, probably just went over my head in '91 🥴🤩 great review, well put together 😁😁👍👍

The most overrated director to ever exist. Lost Highway isn't that bad, but %90 of the films he's made are straight up trash. Bad acting, bad cinematography, dialogue that hurts the brain of anyone with actual taste. He makes trash and in Warhol like style uses his fans' desire to be pretentious to bully anyone out of pointing out how bad his films are. This film isn't bad, but it's not great, he's never made a great film. He's only made two good films, and they're only good because of one actor's performance in each film. Nothing Lynch has ever done as a director has made any of his films worth remembering. Good flat review though, that's not sarcasm I deplore hyperbole in film review. I subscribed based on this review.

an honest opinon I can see you're not keen on Lynch, I do struggle myself with his films a lot of the time, I try not to let my personal views coloujr my editions and I try to stay factual and interesting. Try my later editions as this was earlier in the channels evolution. Thanks for subbing.

Very good review and historical summary.......Some movies I only learned about in this review........Many reviewers never even talked about some of the films in your presentation......I only buy films that interest me so this helps out to address other films I may purchase or watch on the criterion channel..... thanks

How could you forget about Tatum's performance in The Bad News Bears in 1976? It's comparable to Paper Moon in terms of tickets sold. She is stellar in it too. She should have gotten best actress for Paper Moon instead of best supporting actress in my opinion.

Indeed she gave a formidable performance in The Bad News Bears but I was referring to her overall filmography, which hadn't the quality shown overall as was apparent in Paper Moon. I totally agree she should have been nominated for Best Actress.

this is a tricky one as the oriignal 4K release is already out there and lower in price - this is on 100GB for higher bit rate and a remastered 4K even though no Dolby Vision. Thanks for watching the channel.

My panasonic 420 player pixelates and freezes up at about the three quarter mark, especially on Universal discs.. I am giving up on 4k. It's too stressful. I am paranoid every time I watch a 4k that it is going to glitch at some point that I don't enjoy the movie. It's a good job I only have a few.

I know how you feel its those 100GB 4Ks as well the player just struggles - I ended up getting a Reavon 4K player more expensive but so far no glitches on the 4K discs.

I'm glad to see such a nice appreciation for this film! At the time it was trashed by so many. It would be good to see Julien Donkey-Boy get a new release too, although that was shot on early digital , so maybe it won't benefit much beyond the old DVD.

I bought a UB820 this summer, and I plays DVD and Blu-Ray flawlessly, but 30% of the 4k disks I've played it can't even read.

it's particularly sensitive to the dual layer 4K dscs I've now moved away from Panasonic as it's not reliable.

I've just cleaned the disks with lightly soapy water, and wiped them down with a microfiber cloth. They are working. Huge relief.

Thanks for the video. I just purchased this model about 6 weeks ago and has been working great, until yesterday when I noticed a fair amount of raining on my blu-ray and 4K discs. The playback now looks like the quality you would expect from a budget sd dvd player. Fortunately it is still under warranty, so I will first contact Panasonic customer service and see what they think, otherwise I will send it back to them! 😕

I have the laserdisc Criterion release of Spinal Tap! It was really interesting how creative they needed to be in organizing the special features, since laserdiscs didn't have menus.

I did have a player for a few years but import of the LDS in the UK was expensive and I ended up selling it and the few discs I had.

This release is an absolute failure, the fact they did not restore the original directors cut that was fully finished and screened before it scrambled for an R rating to get distribution. Criterion just doesn't care.

Watched the Criterion last night. It's an Incredible film. Absolutely beautiful. The cinematography is out of this world. Brooks is mesmerising. I also highly recommend Diary Of A Lost Girl. Brooks other silent film. I like it even more than Pandora's Box.

Hi. Great video. The problem i have is the grinding noise when playing 4k discs. It's not the usual spin noise, it's a whirling noise (up and down). I don't get this on bluray or dvd in the 820, it's only 4k discs. Any ideas? Yes, some of my discs have started archifacting, but only a quick flash. Your help would be very much appreciated as I'm thinking of upgrading to ub9000. If I can resolve my issue, I'm happy to keep the 820. Subbed.

I actually ended up moving away from Panasonic I had to pay more but I've now got a Reavon and i don't have disc problems. the UB9000 is a good player more robust and I've heard they have less issues.
