Read 4 of them, Middlemarch twice--where r they on my goat list?--#3 Romola, #4 Daniel Deronda #6 Middle March #13 Felix Holt the Radical. Romola is brilliantly written throughout, but the last 20% elevates it to GE''s best imo--partly driven by the history and also by the high intellectual ability of the author. Felix Holt might be her most entertaining--the story of Ester Lyons exceeds that imo of Dorothea Brooke, and it has some of the most interesting scenes relating to the relationships between elderly women and their adult sons.

The plot of Return of the Native is ridiculous, and Hardy himself couldn't be bothered committing to an ending when he finally got there. In all other aspects - characters, place, ideas - it's wonderful.

I love the way John Wyndham's heroines are intelligent, resourceful, self-reliant women.

I've loved John Wyndham's works for decades. I can't get enough of them. He was a lovely person too, wholly devoted to his wife, Grace, who was pretty great too.

Anthony Trollope is my 11th favorite author. Three books on my top 100 favorite books. They keep getting better in my order of reading them. 54) "The Warden" by Anthony Trollope 66) "The Way We Live Now" by Anthony Trollope 81) "Can you forgive her?" by Anthony Trollope This author has the possiblity of making it into the top 10 if the next read makes it into the list. Very few of the other authors in my top ten have any chance of shifting around. I plan to read “He Knew He Was Right” and "Barchester Towers."

Do you get a strong and reliable male and female hero? Or is one inept or foolish enough that the other has to pick up the slack.

The last movie of the hobbit trilogy is much better than the second in my opinion. Much due to the necessary break Jackson took to gain the correct vision distorted by the previous director.

Thank you! I love Jackson and I found Hangsaman very intriguing. I know a lot of Jackson fans don't really like it. I can't say that i loved it BUT it wove a spell on me and left me saying "huh??" And. like you said, I want to reread it.

The people who think reading is a waste of time are right to be hostile to you. The transmission of information has evolved rapidly in the last century - the internet being the biggest disruptor. Choosing to pick the most inefficient method of obtaining information is like writing checks at the checkout line, or sending a letter by mail instead of email. If you're honest with yourself, there's nothing you learned in a book that you couldn't have gotten from a 10 minute KZbin video or a google search. It's fine if you read for entertainment, but don't delude yourself into thinking you're spending your time effectively.

Enjoying your review, thanks. Grossman's Life and Fate is superb. Set during WWlI it covers every facet of Soviet society and is a great eye opener on the period. It also is a fine dovetail to war and peace.

Dustcovers on the first set you show with the Readers Companion are the designs Tolkien made for the covers of the original printing but where never used because of cost and complexity. This is first time they have been used for an edition of Lord of the Rings.

I just finished it, and I was on the side of Nell till you brought up the unreliable narrator. Now I don’t know what to think or trust because is it supernatural, just Nell and the off balance, or all the above? 5 out of 5 for me, even if the ending was a little odd, but still one of my new favorite thrillers.
