I collect cards cause it reminds me of my childhood and I’m a nerd who loves Pokémon. Look for lp/mp cards if you’re buying og cards, you can get cards with the holographic still in great shape for super cheap if there’s a decent bit of white on the edges cause everyone cares about grading em. Not caring about condition is The only way to enjoy the hobby casually now. I got a dark charizard with a swirl for like 20 dollars cause of condition.

I’m a collector that’s in it for the cards and the fact that I love Pokémon… I’m the guy with a PSA 10 Moonbreon that will probably never sell it because I just love Pokémon that much, it’s not about money but…it’s been absolutely ruined for me… when you add the pull rates with how I can’t even get any cards literally anywhere it’s just become a burden more than a fun hobby I got into years ago…. I hate scalpers, with a passion, I’m so sick of 1 guy buying everything and I’m just stuck either paying outrageous prices or having to make it a job to go to every store everyday in the hopes I find literally anything…. I can’t even talk about it with my friends anymore cause we’re all just so sick of the state it’s in… I’m sorry but I’m just about done with it and I’ve loved it for a long time… f.uck you scalpers

Once the value of the card started to be more important than the art, it no longer became a hobby and turned into a business.

I personally still make binders dedicated to my favorite arts, Easter egg cards, and favorite pokemon. I hate when they flash value at us, even though I have a binder for more valuable cards.
@JJRedy2 сағат бұрын
I always click off a pokemon card opening video if they flash the monetary value of the cards. It's annoying. I remember, when i was 9 i pulled a Full art cresselia ex from the boundaries crossed expansion. It was magical, i've never felt such rush with pokemon cards. But then i check the monetary value of the card and it's... Depressing. It's depressing when i see youtubers pull rare cards but act like it was a complete disappointment. And i'm talking about guys like PokeRev, and especially a certain instagram/tiktok guy who loves his jingles and grading the cards on psa

Can we also maybe talk about the biggest problem of all: Grading? Not only does it add to even more plastic waste, but it adds another layer of gambling and wasting money that makes everybody focus only on centering, whitening and all the little blemishes when they open cards, which again ties back to just monetary value. I'm SO over it. It's a pain when you just want to buy a vintage card for your binder and everything is graded, too.

The fact that a little bit of ink and cardboard could ever cost more than a dollar individually is what’s “wrong with the hobby” The rarity is artificial. Pokemon cards are just like diamonds. The company producing them controls the supply, which creates artificial rarity. You can make them at home but they don’t qualify as real, despite having all of the appropriate information on them. It’s all so fucking silly. You know how much it costs to make these fucking things? Pennies. PENNIES.

You earned a like sir. Well argued point and you are right on the money. I prefer watching Pat Deep Pocket Monster over Poke Rev simply because of the binder collection and relationship building. How creators frame the hobby will dictate who takes the jump and who passes; atm, scalpers see it as a money making opportunity, and launderers too more than likely.

Got all these people buying up the cards, and I swear absolutely no one even knows how to play. So many unplayable cards that are high in value is stupid.its honestly really stupid and something I don't see in magic.

That's why pokerev is a clown for lacking self-awareness. Scalpers are one thing, but some influencers who fail to see what they're doing, contributing to the mess is also a problem.

If you look at the sales volume of surging sparks and prismatic evolution on tcgplayer compared to every other set of SV generation, it's 3:1 in sold items. So either the sales are being faked, which is a real possibility, or there's been a huge amount of volume given to only particular sellers. The idea that the print volume is lower than other SV sets doesn't hold up when you examine the sales volume. I think a lot of the blame is being put onto Pokemon company when the real issue is massive hoarding by distros and particular sellers likely in collusion with one another.

Just yesterday I saw someone else talking about it. They said with karmesin & purpur the vendors always had product at market prices for moths at market price and nobody wanted it. In the end they got messaged that Pokémon will reduce printing by 60-70%. Its hart to believe for me that these numbers are actually that high but in general it makes sense for a company to do that. These sets were less interesting for the normal consumer but that changed and the demand grew back. Looking the the investor side of things it makes sense for them to step in and by sort after sets what worsens the situation more.
@Drofel8 сағат бұрын
I can agree that pokémon influencer does play a role in this. They can specifically hype up packs and prices on new cards certainly don’t help but I’m not sure how big of a influence the prices have because this is nothing new to Pokémon.

Thanks for talking about this. I think the stat published was like 65B Pokemon cards printed and half of those were in the last 3 years or so. Pokemon company is printing stuff. I think there's something weird going on with speculators that is causing this. For example look at the Van Gogh pikachu card. When people ruined the museum situation Pokemon company printed ~100K+ cards at least to deal with that. There are thousands of these cards out there. Yet the price keeps creeping up again. Heck almost half of the PSA graded cards are PSA 10s (30k~). This isn't a rare card and it is selling for ~$700? These grading companies also make money based on these values too and it is just an awful ecosystem that causes this. These are also very small markets that can be manipulated by limited supply and demand.

What makes me the saddest about all this is seeing so many children getting caught up in this "investment" approach to colleting cards, usually by their own parents. I've met 6 year olds who are only interested in the cards for the money and not for the Pokémon themselves. I'm also very disappointed that most children I see with cards have no interest in learning how to play the game. Isn't that the whole point of a TCG? If you're not playing, it's just TC, no G.
@nathcurie425012 сағат бұрын
I have seen ads for tcg on YT, only place I've since I don't watch tv. I only really watch a few creators open cards, and most of them is not really their main thing, but I'll be really dissapointed if really their point was "they're not printing enough cards", my brother in christ, this mentality is exactly the problem.
@Tejroe13 сағат бұрын
The only solution Pokémon can implement is a print-to-preorder sales model on main expansions. NOT print-to-order, only print-to-preorder, and NOT special expansions, only main expansions. Just as a quick example, take Scarlet and Violet; the main expansions would be S&V Base, Paldea Evolved, Obsidian Flames, Paradox Rift, Temporal Forces, Twilight Masquerade, Stellar Crown, Surging Sparks, and (coming soon) Journey Together, while the special expansions are 151, Paldean Fates, Shrouded Fable, and Prismatic Evolutions (The best way to tell if a set is a main expansion is to check if a booster box can be ordered for the set). Transitioning to print-to-preorder, TPCi would get thousands of preorders on booster boxes, and it would likely take a very long time to print them all. However, anyone who wants the cards that badly will have the opportunity to at least get packs at a reasonable price. This would drop the prices of sets which, for all intents and purposes, SHOULD be cheaper, and allow for new fans to jump into collecting. Similarly, special expansions would not get this same luxury, to allow for more hardcore fans and collectors (and, unfortunately, scalpers) to have their fun. But just to reiterate, yes it's the Pokémon KZbinrs that have created this mess. Stop putting price tags next to cards as you pull them; you're influencing children to treat Pokémon like gambling, and you're giving gamblers a new method to satiate their addictions. Hell, with the amount of parallels to gambling presented by these KZbinrs, your content should be age-restricted similarly to people posting videos of themselves at a roulette table or playing blackjack. And it's this fact alone that should really disgust most people; this is a hobby, stop treating it like an investment.

surging sparks comes out, so does tcg pocket and not too much time after prismatic evolutions does. i think those 3 things created a perfect storm for waves of new fans and unfortunately scalpers to the hobby. given that pokemon's 30th anniversary is next year, i say we're only in the beginning of this boom for modern pokemon product. i work at a hobby shop and not only is it nearly impossible to get prismatic evolutions in, but distributors have raised the price on other sets as well making it hard to get those in too. i hope this doesn't get much worse, but like i said with the 30th anniversary coming up, this may only be the start.

Solid point about the marketing hype from creators, but there is something else going one recently. For background I’m from the uk, I’ve never seen adverts on tv or out in the world, not even for 151. But since surging sparks I’ve started seeing billboards, walls of lifts, and larger displays within stores. It was even such a noticable change that my mum noticed it when we were out for a meal

My biggest gripe is that it's a trading card GAME. The game is incredibly important to me, yet most people buying these cards never ever touch it and the entire attitude towards the TCG has morphed into something awful.
@shadowmasstitan34417 сағат бұрын
It doesn't help that Pokemon sell only 10,000 master sets per set run. Unless they reprint. So special illustration rares only have 10,000 copies. which seems like a lot until you realize there are over 2 million people that collect pokemon cards. Meaning at minimum 0.005% of people will get a full master set. It gets worse because there are people that collect sealed products that might have a special illustration rare in them. Meaning someone trying to get a master set might not be able to because the card they need is in the sealed products.🤔
@shadowmasstitan34416 сағат бұрын
Just going to add something that happened a year ago. Pokemon co switched from lgs distribution to big company distribution (Walmart, Target, etc.) ps 75% Big company to 25% lgs. Because of this Pokemon lost their safe guard on cards. Because lgs would only sell little at a time while big companies put out all their stocks. Plus they would just sell any amount to a customer. look at what happened at Costco or shiny fates at Walmart. Pokemon co did this to themselves. Now the normal customers of Pokemon cards will suffer while the scalpers get richer. 😢

Creators in my opinion are the main reason for the boom. KZbin algorithm introduced me to 151 and thats what got me hooked. Then learning their is a potential to invest in the hobby also convinced me. Sadly because of the hype I havent been able to find not one pack of 151 yet alone prismatic.

FINALLY!! SOMEBODY HAS SAID IT!! MASSIVE RESPECT TO YOU, Footofaferret! 🙌 I've been waiting for someone to realize this and spread the word, but with the countless videos of youtubers explaining the scalper situation deflecting all the blame to the company not printing enough cards, they never took part of the blame in all this. They only needed to look in the mirror. This problem was so obvious from the start. If people wouldn't stop talking about the value of the cards, then the scalpers (and potential new ones) wouldn't even have the idea of making money out of the tcg in the first place. Collectors need to be back in the forefront of the hobby, not these investors. And hopefully, your video reaches a lot of people so they could realize how money ruins the hobby.
