There are two reasons motorcycles become ultra rare. Either way too expensive to manufacture or complete garbage (did not last and/or no one wanted to buy).

You start the video by talking about engines and finish it by talking about shape (the title says: ...car engines...not shape.) Whatever you forget one of the strangest cars of all time: the rhomboid car, nearly like the number 2 but with a fourth wheel at the rear improving stability, but this car was notorious for another feature: Its shape was supposed to avoid frontal collision (2 rhomboid car during a frontal impact were supposed to slip against each other, each one going to one side avoiding collision)

In my 40+ years career in tractor trailer driving, both regional and OTR, I’ve always had a fine satisfaction when driving twin screw Mack R models with a window in the back, extremely reliable and the ability to handle heavy loads over the roughest roads, like Cross Bronx Exp. With a full load of 22 pallets of beer, at 46,000 lbs, in the 48’ trailers we used, hauling scrap metal from the Providence, RI area, to Harrisburg, PA, the a short deadhead back to the Strobe Brewery, now the Samual Adams in Foglesville, PA. Then back to Prov. RI, all just barely illegal in the pre CDL daze of two log books. But there was always something nice about the 300 Maxidyne 5 speed, which was ALL MACK, built right down the road from the Brewery. The company bought them nicely kitted out with Alcoa tanks. Wheels are bumper, plenty of chrome, top trim diamond pleated interior with Bostrom seats and air-ride cab, that helped with the 40,000 camelback rears, that we added KONI shocks all around. I added a set of Cibie Z Beam halogen headlights for night driving. I could make 5 turns in a week, starting at 3:00am Monday morning and ending at Friday midnight to 4am Saturday morning. In the mid 80’s. It was very helpful when Connecticut removed the 6 tolls along Rt. 95!

Quite a few models in this video are conventional designs being referred to as COE’s. For example the Mack B61, this is an example of a conventional truck/tractor. The Mack quadraplex was a very common transmission design for the period. Spicer, Rockwell ( International Harvester brand of transmission and differential parts) and others offered this. The trucks were designed and built for the jobs they performed. Yet comparing them to today’s trucks is like comparing apples to oranges. Todays trucks do have better amenities than their older cousins, the reasons being 1 availability a lot of what we take for granted weren’t available at the time. 2 driver demand. 3 motor carrier safety administration regulation, especially in safety equipment (ABS brakes etc). 4 todays driver, most of them are not able to understand the mechanics of a manual transmission, let alone multiple set ups. Cars today come standard with an automatic transmission people don’t learn the intricacies of manual shifting as they did “ back in the day”. The first truck I drove was a B63 Mack equipped with the Mack quadraplex, no power steering, no AC. I didn’t see power steering until in a Ford LN8000 short nose conventional. My first OTR job I didn’t have power steering, but I got AC!. I didn’t see an automatic trans mission until the end of my career when the company got new lessors from Penske. One other characteristic about the old trucks is, they were built to last, they had to be, another thing is those trucks were seen as investments and owners did everything they could to keep them on the road. Todays truck has an average life of around 5-7 years before it is replaced with a new model. There lighter materials and the higher speeds take a real toll on their life span.

I was in the Navy from 67 to 73 they use a lot of Dodge Power Wagons in you could go anywhere in them put the head no real suspension the ride was like you were almost running over a washboard side note how many of you pilgrims are old enough to remember when you started something like that you had to push two pedals down on the floor to engage the starter no key starter

My first new car was a 2 Liter Pinto hatch back which except for color and tire size, mine was yellow and had Polyglas A-70/13 wide ovals, was just like the one shown at 22:38! As inexpensive small cars go, it was top of the heap back then. Larger and better handling than any Japanese car of similar size and much less expensive too! Considering that all small cars from every maker back then had the gas tank between the bumper and rear axle and would burst into flames if rear ended by a pig pickup truck, it got an undeserved bad reputation. Mainly because it outsold them all! We put over 125,000 miles on that car in Germany including autobahn driving WO a single hitch before selling it to buy a 71 Boss-429 Mustang out of the PX in Heidelburg!

The no worse engine feature is the engine auto stop and restart design flaw. Every time the engine turns off, the oil pressure goes to zero. This will assure a shortened engine service life all to save a few spoonfuls of fuel per full tank. Then all the fuel savings will disappear instantly. You will be in a deep hole of debt and saved nothing.

I don't know that anything made by Detroit, Cummins, or Caterpillar were one of a kind in a truck - maybe, but the one I can think of is the Hall-Scott V12 in the fuel hauler Kenworth. I don't think there was any more than one built - 2182ci destroked and tuned down to 450hp. I think it ended up about 1900-ish cubic inches

My Dad drove trucks In the 50-60-70. None had power steering all where manual transmission most 18 speed ,twin screw , deep reduction. Turbo 6s. This video is stupid because if those truck where cutting-edge then and the great grandfather of the new trucks, where strong men drove them every day.
@brustar51525 күн бұрын
Referring to trucks thought of as respected workhorses in their day as "silly" when compared to today's offerings is akin to calling your great great grandma silly for placing freshly baked pies on an open window's sill to cool or beating a carpet over an outdoor clothesline as compared to using all those later inventions like refridgerators or vacuum cleaners. DUMBAZZERY with no valid point to make.
