My son has autism and try’s to get out and run in street etc and Ihss wants to re-asses him even though the day they came out he tried to get out literally right in front of them. They will try and take it away which is ridiculous

I wonder, and care, about you guys. Keep fighting the good fight, mama. The world is not our friend in this battle royale. "Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;" (Colossians 3:12 KJV)

What are the max hours 1 person can work under the supervisory ?

I'm so happy I came across your site. My family is nearly a carbon copy of yours, my Scott, age 23, and your Jason are so very similar in every way even the hair smelling! Our current situation is this, Scott has had Protective Supervision for the entire time he's had IHSS, 14 years. His social worker of those 14 years retired in October and a new social worker came in and decided he doesn't qualify anymore. She spent 5 minutes with Scott and the rest of the assessment was with me; I answered the same questions I've been answering for the past 14 years. This social worker was a very young girl; I spoke to her supervisor after NOA arrived and she was so rude (I got very emotional and cried while talking to her) she told me to appeal, which I've done (filed appeal 1/6/24) You gave me so many great points that I can bring up in our appeal. Thank you so much!! If you need help with Self Determination, I can help you. I am 10 months into the process and actually have the budget meeting today with the Regional Center. If your interested in me helping you let me know here then we can exchange info. Michelle Munson Brentwood, CA

I totally admit to using the stall especially when it’s busy, and often thought should I? Is it like a parking spot? No one is in here what’s the likelihood they show up? What if there were disabled people waiting for other disabled people? Can they hold it like able bodied people? I need room to help my able bodied child. Now having worked as a Para professional, helping kids in several situations with braces, wheelchairs and walkers, diapers, and non use of arms / hands, I can fully appreciate what parents must go through in these situations! That’s not including the addition of behavioral issues on top of it! Thanks for sharing this, because many think they are considerate people in general, like myself, but then someone opens our eyes to a new perspective! ❤

Yes, I have also used the larger stall when none other is available, and always worry that someone is waiting who truly needs it. The rant about this is really more about employees or people who just want privacy using the family restroom. But whether for convenience, privacy or any other reason, it leaves few choices for parents and caregivers who need to change a little one's diapers, or accompany their adult person with a disability to assist them. I only want people to be more compassionate and understanding. Hugs!

I went through the IHSS process for my Nana, who had stage 4 terminal bladder cancer. They came to the home and did the assessment, and yes the person a younger female didn't seem to understand the care that was needed for my Nana and did not give her very many hours, mostly for meal prep, even though she needed daily care. I understand that you can adjust the hours as time goes on. You could have him assessed clinically with an emphasis for IHSS hours and the care he needs. This was just the initial assessment. They will come back in a year to adjust hours. Angel View has a day program; as a person with autism I looked into their programs and they said I would qualify but it wouldn't benefit me very much (I am trying to gain social skills I need) and recommended ARC for me so I can maybe get the job skills and social skills I still am missing as 33 year old. I hope IHSS works out for you, I went through the process to become IHSS worker for my Nana so I know exactly what you are talking about.

HI Stephanie, thank you for sharing. I am planning to look into ARC for Jason, I think he would enjoy a regular task and purpose rather than just "babysitting." I hope that you find what works for you, it is something I continue to think about. Adults like you fall between the cracks of societal activity. If I had the funds and the support I think I would start something revolutionary for adults with Autism. Hugs to you!

@@autismlifeslittledetour Oh I agree 100%. Autism can be hidden like other neurodivergent and mental conditions like P.T.S.D.; and even when it is more visible, it is still really misunderstood. I would support that start up; something that is centered on adults with autism and their families so that the awareness and struggles can become more mainstream and hopefully supported in society better. Hugs back!

You obviously love your son very much. It's never too late to make positive changes. The body and brain are amazingly adaptable and change is cumulative. I agree with you about the medications, they are no bueno. Trust your instincts; watch him closely and you can figure out what he's feeling. He may have withdrawals, but the poison has to leave his body before he can truly heal. Then/during weaning please consider replenishing him with outdoor exercise, high quality vitamins, water, home cooked organic food, and less screen time. If he is into music, really explore that passion with him, any way you can. Keep fighting the good fight...you were made for this.

Thank you Kristie, it is a challenge, especially since my first three children are daughters. Having an adult son is so different. My daughters are off doing life, and Jason is still learning how to just do the basics. You will do just fine with Jorryn, one day at a time, right?

Sorry you had to deal with that it honestly can be really traumatic for everyone involved! There is no right or wrong you did the best you could. There is no manual for parents with Autistic Adults. It's all a trial by error experience so hang in there! Don't let anyone else's opinion worry you :)

This is a great explanation of the needs of any challenged adult. The only thing I would have done differently would be to put the part about getting conservatorship before 18, is at the beginning of the video rather than at the end.
