Autism: Life's Little Detour - IHSS protective supervision hours

Parent providers for adults with Autism are eligible for IHSS protective supervision hours, but the process can be frustrating. We had an interesting assessment.

I went through the IHSS process for my Nana, who had stage 4 terminal bladder cancer. They came to the home and did the assessment, and yes the person a younger female didn't seem to understand the care that was needed for my Nana and did not give her very many hours, mostly for meal prep, even though she needed daily care. I understand that you can adjust the hours as time goes on. You could have him assessed clinically with an emphasis for IHSS hours and the care he needs. This was just the initial assessment. They will come back in a year to adjust hours. Angel View has a day program; as a person with autism I looked into their programs and they said I would qualify but it wouldn't benefit me very much (I am trying to gain social skills I need) and recommended ARC for me so I can maybe get the job skills and social skills I still am missing as 33 year old. I hope IHSS works out for you, I went through the process to become IHSS worker for my Nana so I know exactly what you are talking about.

HI Stephanie, thank you for sharing. I am planning to look into ARC for Jason, I think he would enjoy a regular task and purpose rather than just "babysitting." I hope that you find what works for you, it is something I continue to think about. Adults like you fall between the cracks of societal activity. If I had the funds and the support I think I would start something revolutionary for adults with Autism. Hugs to you!

@@autismlifeslittledetour Oh I agree 100%. Autism can be hidden like other neurodivergent and mental conditions like P.T.S.D.; and even when it is more visible, it is still really misunderstood. I would support that start up; something that is centered on adults with autism and their families so that the awareness and struggles can become more mainstream and hopefully supported in society better. Going through the process now for my brother, hes 12 now and has moderate to severe autism. Not sure how many hours we will get but the interview went well he does leave the house when he gets angry hurts himself so it can be hard at times. We love him so much, were hoping first the best

What are the max hours 1 person can work under the supervisory ?
