Nice video! I wonder, if you measured the relief before, once you remove the neck can you measure the *change* in relief so that you can always get to 0.2 mm once the neck is on and strings up to tension? For example, say the relief is 0.6mm, from 1st to last fret as measured from the 8th fret, therefore 0.4mm higher than the 0.2mm you want. You loosen the strings and remove the neck, now the relief will be less because there is no string tension. You can measure this with a straight edge and a feeler gauge, perhaps it is (I'm inventing a number) 0.3mm. So you turn the truss rod so that the relief is now 0.3-0.4=-0.1mm, i.e. a backbow of 0.1mm. When you tighten the strings back up it should then be pretty close to 0.2mm. Of course this relies on the assumption that the neck responds linearly to tension in this range. I haven't tried this yet, but if anybody has I'd love to know if it worked!

This is heavy stuff. Thanks for your honesty. Other people would have "sold" it as another positive step for perfectly aligned stars - you did not. This is good. For yourself but also for others, because a lot of people nowadays are facing deep changes with regard to life but also with regard to human interactions, which tend to be more rude. It is good to know that there are still the "good ones", as they are often overheard/missed because of the loudness of (comparably few) people who fully adapted to the direct and brutal "zeitgeist". I play your instruments every week and record songs to cope with the things i encounter. Your positive energy in these instruments means so much for me - i cannot tell you. A permanent and reliable lifesaver. So to sum up up your statement: you did enough! You left no one behind - you influenced and helped many others - and you are probably not aware how often. So Juha: great job! great guy! great and wonder wonderful team! And as Mando would have said: this is the (only) way!

Thank you so much Nic, my dear friend, for your heartfelt feedback. I admit I was a bit nervous about making this video, but the comments and private messages I've received from you and many others have confirmed to me that it was the right thing to do. In your private message you expressed also your slight concern about the "new chapter" I mentioned on this video. Your concern made me realize that the way I phrased my words might have been interpreted as something dramatic, like, perhaps I'm giving away our independence by selling the company, or something else of such magnitude. Thank you for your honesty and caring Nic! I hope you don't mind me addressing your concern here? You can rest assured knowing that I have no such plans whatsoever! The "new chapter" I mentioned is in fact a step to the opposite direction - to become even more independent. :) I'm very much looking forward to telling you all about it soon!

Every guitarist should see this video, even if they don’t play a Les Paul or similar style guitar. I’ve been stringing my guitars this way for over fifty years, and I still learned a few things from this lesson. For instance, I never thought about releasing any twist that may have happened to the string. That alone is worth watching this video. I’ve been using lip balm in my nut slots for many years and it works well, but it’s a little bit messy. I might just invest in a lubricant made for guitars the next time I buy strings. Here are three things I would like to contribute: 1-Some people like to solder the unwound strings near the ball end to keep it from unraveling. In theory this is a good idea, but it’s hard to get solder to stick to the shiny metal and you might ruin the temper of the strings by overheating it. Instead I use a bit of water thin super glue on the lock twist and it works really well. A tiny drop is all you need; capillary action will draw the glue into the lock twist. You have to make sure the glue is completely dry before putting the string through the tail piece. 2-If your guitar has a thicker head stock or shorter tuning posts you will have to be careful not to wind too much string onto the post. This seems to be a particular problem with Epiphone Les Pauls and SGs. If you wind too much string onto the post it will grind the string against the washer on the head stock and ruin the windings. For guitars like this, with the wound strings, once around the post will be sufficient, as long as you use the locking method recommended here. This shouldn’t be a problem with the unwound strings. 3-I’ve seen a lot of videos where the technician cuts the wound strings before winding them onto the post. Even if your strings have a hex-shaped core, this will cause your wound strings to go dead prematurely. Don’t cut the strings until they are locked with the knot recommended here. Thank you so much for this excellent advice. I’ve been a player, builder and tech for many years and I still learned a few things here. This is hands-down the best video I’ve ever seen on how to string a guitar with a 3+3 style head stock. You’ve got my subscription for sure.

Thank you for your feedback. A couple of comments to your feedback: 1) Agreed, heating the string with soldering iron doesn't feel like a great idea to me. Regarding the superglue, well, with the many string brands I've used over the past 3 decades stringing up guitars, I can't say I would've ever had an issue of the unwound strings unraveling near the ball end, but if some string brand does have such an issue then superglue likely does the trick. Sometimes a new string may simply snap broken near the ball end - which to me sounds either a quality issue of the string, or alternatively something not right in the guitar bridge/tailpiece where the ball end is anchored. 2) Yes of course, with shorter posts less winds is better, agreed. 3) Hmmm... with hex-core strings, with my experience, I've never had such an issue. But again, that doesn't mean such an issue couldn't exist. Thanks for pointing this out!

I've taken my guitar to many places to adjust the truss rod and they never do it very well. I wonder what they are doing wrong or what is happening to my 50s fender vintera. It is initially perfect and next day it's all wrong again , string buzz or no open chord will sound tuned...hmm I'll try do it myself
@ruokangasАй бұрын
Thanks. If your guitar has felt perfect (as you wrote) after the adjustment, but then during following days the neck (truss rod) has changed "on its own", this would indicate that either the truss rod of the guitar in question has a tendency to adapt to adjustments slowly. In other words, next time you take the guitar to a repair shop, it's good to mention them about this, and ask them to take their time with it - adjust, wait a day, readjust, and repeat that until it doesn't move anymore after adjustments. Alternatively, your guitar neck is simply unstable. This can be caused by too hasty build process of the neck, wood that wasn't dry when the guitar was built, or something similar.
@seirenmusicoficialАй бұрын
Thanks so much for your reply. I was thinking that might be the case because every time the guitar has been set up , it's been in a few hours or from one day to the other since I've had rehearsals, gigs etc ..the next day.

@5:10 you talk about bending before cutting the string with round core, but when you replaced the A string with the GHS boomer after the first string unraveled, you didn't do that. I think all GHS Boomers are round core.
@ruokangas3 ай бұрын
Thank you for the correction! Wow - I've never realized Boomers are in fact round core, as you said. Or, as I found out, any wound Boomers between 024 and 060 are. It is interesting how resilient to breakage the Boomers are even when not bending before cutting - for example DR strings would be in my experience quite much more problematic. Thanks again - I stand corrected.

@@ruokangas I've read that GHS "swage's" their core wire before wrapping, so it might be some sort of hybrid between the two. I've been going on a deep dive of strings trying to figure out what I really prefer after a couple of decades of not changing. I fear change :-)
