I haven't liked much of Water's singing contributions after Dark Side, but actually preferred his voice on Cigar to Harper's and to the accompanist in the second track here, who I assume is Gilmour. A pretty lame guitar solo heard here though.
@James-jb5ls9 ай бұрын
Yeah ..has to be Gilmore's worst solo. But you don't like Waters voice after darkside? Seriously? It just got better!! No one could sing sheep, half of Dogs, The Wall and the Final Cut with the venom and feeling as Waters
@rjlchristie9 ай бұрын
@@James-jb5ls Yeah, I seriously don't like Water's nor the band voice post WYWH. In fact, I stopped buying Floyd after experiencing major disappointment with Animals. I had all their previous efforts since Piper. But owned none after Animals. Syd's Floyd along with Atom H M , Meddle, Obscured and Dark side were their peak years. Others have their own opinions.
@James-jb5ls9 ай бұрын
@rjlchristie that's sad because Animals is their best album. All 4 members shine on that album. Not mention The Wall probably the best concept album of all times. Amused to Death is the best solo album by far from any solo effort by any Floyd member. Piper is a waste of time to listen to. That album just proves that thank God they got rid of Barrett or we wouldn't be having this conversation. But I will agree with you that Atom heart mother is a great album and totally underrated!!
@rjlchristie9 ай бұрын
@@James-jb5ls As said, opinions differ. But I suspect that you came to Floyd well after I did (1972), or are a few years younger - there is nothing wrong with that but that's generally the case with people who prefer post WYWH Floyd. Go well.

Welcome To The Machine was re-recorded from scratch and almost entirely reworked. Sheep/Raving And Drooling and Dogs/You've Gotta Be Crazy were almost entirely re-recorded and substantially reworked after this point. However, if one carefully compares the work in progress "outtakes" with the finished Wish You Were Here and Animals albums, one can recognize that at least some parts of these work in progress demos had been copied into the finished records. Here are the parts that were most likely copied over:- -The rhythm section and background synth strings of Have A Cigar. During completion, Rick Wright's Minimoog was added to the recurring musical hook, and Dave Gilmour's distorted electric guitar solo and fills were completely re-recorded, extended and mostly reworked, and Dave and Roger Waters's vocals were replaced by Roy Harper's vocals. Also during completion, the false start was chopped out and the ending was shortened slightly and altered to be "sucked" into a transistor radio to form the transition into the newly added Wish You Were Here title track. Also during completion, the volume of some of Rick Wright's synth string parts was increased. -All of Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part I. The exceptions are that the little bits of synth noise at the very start and very end were chopped out and the synth strings and Hammond Organ were extended in the finished version for Dave Gilmour to lay his emotional electric guitar solo over and to form the transition into Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part II. Echo was also added to Rick Wright's synth trumpet/flute solo during mastering. Also during completion, wine glass and glass harp sounds were added from the otherwise aborted Household Objects project and the volume of this section was substantially lowered. -The rhythm section, arpeggio electric guitar and background Hammond Organ of Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part II. The intro of this section was shortened slightly in the finished version and Dave Gilmour's main distorted electric guitar solo was almost completely re-recorded and mostly reworked. Also during completion, wine glass and glass harp sounds were added to the intro from the aforementioned Household Objects project. Also during completion, synth strings and Hammond Organ were added to the intro to form the transition from Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part I. -All of Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part III. Echo was added to Rick Wright's synth trumpet/flute solo during mastering. The funny drumbeat between 22:24 and 22:28 is a dead giveaway to this copying job! -All of Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part IV. Along with Dave Gilmour and Rick Wright, The Blackberries vocalists, Venetta Fields and Carlena Williams, were added as backing vocalists to the "Shine On etc" hooks during completion. Dave's (or Syd Barrett's?) stock hearty laughter between 23:08 and 23:12 is a dead giveaway to this copying job! Also during completion, a Minimoog from Rick and an additional distorted electric guitar layer from Dave both harmonized the existing distorted electric guitar solo in between the verses. -All of Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part V. Dick Parry's melancholy saxophone solos were added with the second sax solo and synth strings both being extended to form the transition into the re-recorded and reworked Welcome To The Machine during completion. Synth machinery noises were also added to form this transition during completion. -All of Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part VI. During completion, the intro of this section was extended via synth gale force winds, four bass guitar notes, and extra synth strings to form the transition from the newly added Wish You Were Here title track. Also during completion, Rick Wright's synth alto saxophone/oboe solo is extended further in the background of Dave Gilmour's slide guitar solo. -All of Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part VII. Along with Dave Gilmour and Rick Wright, The Blackberries vocalists, Venetta Fields and Carlena Williams, were added as backing vocalists to the "Shine On etc" hooks during completion. Also during completion, Roger Waters's vocals during the "Shine On etc" hooks were remixed. -Roughly half of Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part VIII. Roughly half of this section was removed during completion with additional Minimoog, Hammond Organ, VCS3 and ARP Solina String Ensemble noises added to form the transition into the newly completed Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part IX. Also during completion, the synth "Shine" noises and Rick Wright's synth solo were extended throughout Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part VIII. -Dogs/You've Gotta Be Crazy secondary rhythm electric guitar throughout 45:33 to 48:00. -Roger Waters's "You'll get the chance to put the knife in!" hook on Dogs/You've Gotta Be Crazy between 46:01 to 46:08. Roger's eccentric delivery of this hook is a dead giveaway to this copying job! -Dogs/You've Gotta Be Crazy main distorted electric guitar solo layer throughout 46:06 to 46:48, 47:53 to 49:05, and 58:57 to 1:00:04. -Dogs/You've Gotta Be Crazy Minimoog throughout 47:15 to 48:00 and 1:01:00 to 1:01:50. -Dogs/You've Gotta Be Crazy Hammond Organ throughout 45:28 to 48:00, 57:37 to 58:58, and 1:00:00 to 1:01:50. -Dogs/You've Gotta Be Crazy crash cymbals throughout 45:28 to 49:05, 49:47 to 52:26, and 57:37 to 1:01:50. -Dogs/You've Gotta Be Crazy rhythm section sans acoustic guitar throughout 45:28 to 49:05, 49:47 to 52:26, and 57:37 to 1:01:50. -Dave Gilmour's "And when you lose control etc" verse on Dogs/You've Gotta Be Crazy between 51:03 to 52:11. However Dave's "Dragged down by the stone" hook between 52:11 to 52:18 was re-recorded during completion. -Stock bleating Sheep sounds from 1:02:06 to 1:02:43. These stock bleating Sheep sounds were used in the completed Animals album to form the transition from the newly completed Pigs (Three Different Ones) into the re-recorded and reworked Sheep/Raving And Drooling as well as to form the transition from Sheep/Raving And Drooling into the newly added but fractured Pigs On The Wing Part 2. The stock bleating Sheep sounds can also be heard in the background of Rick Wright's keyboard solo in the middle of the finished Sheep. -Sheep/Raving And Drooling distorted electric guitar solo throughout 1:18:32 to 1:20:45. At the end of the completed Sheep, this electric guitar solo fades back into the stock bleating Sheep sounds. -Sheep/Raving And Drooling slash electric guitar throughout 1:11:51 to 1:14:00, 1:15:29 to 1:16:10, and 1:17:35 to 1:20:45. At the end of the completed Sheep, the slash electric guitar fades back into the stock bleating Sheep sounds. -Sheep/Raving And Drooling rhythm electric guitar throughout 1:11:51 to 1:14:00, 1:15:29 to 1:16:10, and 1:17:35 to 1:20:45. At the end of the completed Sheep, the rhythm electric guitar fades back into the stock bleating Sheep sounds. -Sheep/Raving And Drooling Minimoog throughout 1:16:10 to 1:17:48. -Sheep/Raving And Drooling Hammond Organ throughout 1:11:51 to 1:14:06, 1:15:14 to 1:16:10, and 1:17:35 to 1:20:45. At the end of the completed Sheep, the Hammond Organ fades back into the stock bleating Sheep sounds. -Sheep/Raving And Drooling drums and percussion throughout 1:11:43 to 1:14:00, 1:14:59 to 1:16:10, and 1:17:27 to 1:20:45. At the end of the completed Sheep, the drums and percussion fade back into the stock bleating Sheep sounds. -Sheep/Raving And Drooling bass guitar throughout 1:10:09 to 1:20:45. In the completed Sheep, this bass part is shortened slightly at the start and is altered to fade out of the stock bleating Sheep sounds and Rick Wright's newly added electric piano solo whilst at the end of the completed Sheep, this bass part fades back into the stock bleating Sheep sounds. -All of Pigs (Three Different Ones). Roger Waters's Careful With That Axe, Eugene-esque squeal at the end of his first "You're nearly a laugh etc" hook was removed during completion but would be brought back for the 1977 live versions. Echo was added to Roger's vocals on his final verse and "Mary you're etc" hook during completion. Roger's voice was also harmonized by himself on his final "May you're etc" hook during completion. Stock pig sounds, which were processed through a vocoder, were added throughout this song during completion. An acoustic grand piano from Rick Wright was added to the verses and hooks during completion. Rick also added additional synth strings higher in the mix throughout this song during completion. An additional rhythm electric guitar with wah-wah effects from Dave Gilmour was added at the end of Roger's first "You're nearly a laugh etc" hook during completion. Also during completion, an additional electric guitar from Dave was added in the background throughout this song with the same whining dog-like sound that can already be heard in the background in parts of this work in progress demo of Pigs (Three Different Ones) as well as in the background of the slow sad whimpering dog-like electric guitar solos in the completed Dogs. A main distorted electric guitar solo layer with a piggy Talkbox effect from Dave was added to the middle of this song during completion. This same type of piggy electric guitar solo was later played again by Dave at the end of Keep Talking from The Division Bell album in 1994. A more conventionally distorted electric guitar solo layer from Dave was added at the end of Pigs (Three Different Ones) during completion. Roger's "Whoo!" during the first verse, Roger's hissed "Get down!" at the end of his first "You're nearly a laugh etc" hook and the funny click effect near the start of Roger's second "You're nearly a laugh etc" hook are all dead giveaways to this copying job! Also during completion, the ending of this song was altered to fade into the stock bleating Sheep sounds.

Judging by its absence here, it appears that Dave's emotional opening electric guitar solo from Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part I, must have been added very late, possibly even near the end of the Wish You Were Here album production. It was also missing from the pre-release concerts of 1974 and early-mid 1975. I wonder if that guitar solo might have been a direct effect of Syd Barrett's last ever visit to The Floyd on 5/6/1975 with his heartbreaking change of appearance. At least Dave Gilmour, Roger Waters and Rick Wright and even Storm Thorgerson were all reduced to tears by Syd's physical decline. Dick Parry's melancholy saxophone solo from Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part V and Rick's emotional Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part IX are also notable by their absence here, although Dick's solo and a shorter Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part IX (with the See Emily Play quote already established) were played live in 1974 and 1975 pre-release. Rick Wright's mesmeric and psychedelic and epic synth solo from the middle of Dogs/You've Gotta Be Crazy is also notable by its absence in these work in progress demos. Interestingly the mesmeric synth solo is also missing from the live demos of Dogs/You've Gotta Be Crazy from the transitional 1975 legs of the Dark Side Of The Moon Tour. In the completed Dogs, the mesmeric synth solo is dominated by Rick's Arp Solina String Ensemble synth strings and Minimoog synth solo. In the background is some slow and quiet live Cymbaline-esque drumming and cymbal tapping from Nick Mason while Dave Gilmour's barked "stone" is processed through a vocoder and repeatedly echos through the mesmeric solo. There are also stock barking and howling dog sounds in the background with some of them also processed through the vocoder. Some of these stock dog barking and howling sounds were recycled from none other than Seamus the dog's self-titled song from 1971's Meddle album! An early version of Rick Wright's mesmeric and psychedelic and epic keyboard solo from the middle of Dogs/You've Gotta Be Crazy was performed during the live demos of this song from the transitional late 1974 leg of the Dark Side Of The Moon Tour. In these live demos of Dogs/You've Gotta Be Crazy, the mesmeric solo was dominated by Rick's clanging and airy Farfisa Organ sounds and clanging and echoing electric piano and was substantially shorter than the reworked and completed version. In the background was gentle cymbal tapping from Nick Mason and some gentle electric guitar picking from Dave Gilmour in the first half of this section backed by equally gentle bass guitar picking from Roger Waters.

I saw David on this tour. It was my first time seeing him live and he was even better than I'd hoped. His guitar playing and tone were just monstrous. Unbelievable. This particular instrumental off his first album is a favorite of mine. Unfortunately, Raphael Ravenscroft's sax solo (and Greg Deckert's keyboard solo) take a bit away from it for me. Neither quite fit right in my opinion. But Gilmour is incredible as always. I remember he played a strange Martin prototype. It was a headless, short scale electric with a sort of "batwing" body (google Martin Shithammer). Odd looking thing, but Gilmour made it sing. Near the end it's just him under a lone spotlight squeezing magic out of that peculiar guitar. Fantastic. Thanks for posting this.
