Good you were able to get out and about. We had a great field day. Ran two stations. Our portable set up at the Kincardine EOC on Saturday running as VA3KEO. Our remote station also from there on Saturday as VA3YLR. On Sunday just our remote station with myself and two YLs from Turkey. Lots of great contacts from both stations. 40 and 20 from Kincardine. 80, 40 and 20 from home.

I made about 20 park to park contacts on 20m Saturday but the stations were all very faint and my reports were not good either. Lucky I was blasting 100w on my 857d or no one would have heard me. I did get two 3w QRP contacts on FT8, but no one could hear me on QRP phone.

Turning both radios so that the antennas were parallel to the ground should have significantly improved the signals. Horizontal polarization is the way to go in most cases.

Yes. At the moment the audio input isn't working, but the output is. I've tested this a few times sending APRS messages and it works. JS8Calll APRS messages are only one way anyways, so there is some utility. I'd like to get the audio input working, but at the moment it looks highly unlikely.

@@VA3OSO that sweet to get the sending to work though. I think improving the interoperability of digital modes certainly is a key future area of study for Ham radio. Kudos for you for giving this a try and finding even a moderate amount of success. You never know maybe this inspires others to get the audio input/ decoding side figured out on this or another program.

See my comment thread with the creator but the gist is that with program Winlator he is able to run windows JS8Call Program. Though this work around he is able to send JS8call messages, but is not able to receive anything because the program Winlator does not allow for audio input.

If it took someone a second to figure out what's happening here like me, this exploits the fact that 1) WWV is AM, and thus has a carrier at its zero frequency, and 2) that carrier is ultra tightly controlled and calibrated by NIST. So, being in USB and tuning 1kHz below the carrier means the carrier is (or should be) now centered at 1kHz (thus generating a 1kHz tone). By adjusting your frequency offset so that the audible tone is at exactly 1kHz, you are setting your offset so that the WWV carrier is indeed at 1kHz above where you're tuned, thus synchronizing where your radio IS tuned and where it THINKS it's tuned.

Love the idea of sitting in a tent in the northern woods with a QRP radio and EFHW antenna up a tall tree. Only major way this video differs from my fantasy is I'd have a little LG laptop and I'd be doing some sort of digital mode like PSK31, Olivia, or FT8. I have long wanted to try using a slingshot to install an antenna. Tell me more about it! 73 de R1CBU
@VA3OSO
@VA3OSO 2 жыл бұрын
It works really really well - you can get your antenna up easily to 50ft. What you want to use, besides the slingshot is lightweight braided line and a 1.5oz+ lead weight. If the weight isn't enough it will get constantly stuck in the tree branches. Watch how you store the line as when you shoot it up, you don't want it to get tangled on itself or anything else. I have gotten a lot of good ideas from arborists, tree experts. It takes some practice, but it's well worth the time as we all know antennas like height!
