Hi! I'm new to this channel but I absolutely love the way you talk about books and your recs! Elana Knows was one of my absolute faves of 2022 as well! I am curious about how it was translated to English since I'm from Argentina myself and was able to read it in Spanish! One of the thing I liked the most was that Elena's voice and expressions were very argentinian so it'd be cool to see how they were translated ❤❤❤❤

You really made me want to pick up another Baldwin book ! As for Ernaux, I've only read 2 of her books and one of them is in my top books of all time, it's called La place in french and I think was translated to A man's place. Highly recommend! Talks about class and feeling like you're betraying your family as you change throughout your life.

i added three of the books you recommended to my tbr list!! i feel like the years by annie ernaux is a great book, but it's even better if you do know what is the historical context behind the story (as ernaux doesn't really dwelve into explaining anything; you read it as something that has been witnessed). also 횐's translation is beautiful, but i'd really recommend to read it in Korean:)

thank you so much for this video! i have a question about the contest for emerging translators that you won (congratulations, by the way!!!!): did you translate a chapter of a book that you particularly loved, or did you translate the entire thing? (it seems like an insane requirement)

Thanks for the recs. I do recognize some of the names including James Baldwin, though I’ve read only one short story by him called Sonny’s Blues - which actually has a special place in my heart as it’s the first work I wrote a paper on as an English lit major. It was a comparison with another short story by Urusula K Leguin called The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas. Dunno if you’ve heard of it, but it’s a short interesting read that gives you a lot to think about. If anything, I liked the writing style. A small trigger warning though - if memory serves, I think it has some descriptions of abuse, but they’re necessary to the story. Anyway, look at me yapping! I haven’t had people to share my thoughts about books in such a long time that I just went on and on 😅 Also, I’ve been interested to read Native Speaker too! Maybe I’ll pick it up some time. Btw, you look so cute in that blue hat 😊

I let out so many longing sighs watching this video - you're living my dream! If it's not prying to ask, I was wondering what your visa status is. Are you a Korean citizen, or were you able to get a visa for translation work? Or are you working another job to meet work visa requirements? Just trying to figure out how I might make the logistics work on my end! Thank you in any case for putting out a video like this, it's really helpful and interesting to get a glimpse of the day-to-day of a literary translator. Best of luck with all your projects! I'm a new subscriber, so I'll be rooting for you as you keep us updated :)

Yayyy, I always wanted to find other translators on YT!! 💗Literary translation works differently in Brazil. You have to send your CV to book publishing companies and hope that they will send you a translation test. If they do and you perform well, they will contact you when they have work available. So, from the start, it's the company who decides what books they want to aquire, translate and publish. The painful part is that they are a very closed group, usually having those professionals they always go to, so... many many times they just thank you for your interest and say they aren't hiring at the moment , without even sending you a test💀
@KateLee313 күн бұрын
