@Devoti Probably, yes. This is traditional kata training, which means it's not supposed to be a simuation of combat but rather an excercise where the uchidachi (attacker and teacher) provides the junior practitioner a chance to perfect his distancing, timing, accuracy and body mechanics as dictated by the school. The school itself is a pedagocical structure of prearranged forms known as kata. In addition to being a physical exercise, every kata is a bundle of vital information and introduces you to the important elements and ideas of the school.

This particular kata actually looks like a partner-resisted functional strength drill, where both parties are training the strength to contest the guard in attack and defence phases, respectively. I've trained both koryu and traditional chinese martial arts, and they definitely provide mutually complementing perspectives with which to interpret training drills.

Musashis teaching must have been far more evolved than this show. His duels were in large part life and death. The fighting would be far more intense, frightening, and chaotic than described here.
@kogai
@kogai 10 жыл бұрын
Dear sir, this is not a "show" in the sense that you are referring to. It is a demonstration of Hyoho Niten Ichi ryu, a kenjutsu school that Miyamoto Musashi himself founded. Therefore, the school is an authentic Japanese martial art tradition. The techiques are historical, handed down by generation after another, and developed for training, not for entertainment or choreographed fight sequences. How you train can be very different from how you fight!

kogai This is not a sparring. People don't understand that a kata is a demo of techniques
@kogai
@kogai 9 жыл бұрын
Well, I didn't exactly make the claim that all the techniques in this school orinate from Musashi himself. Often (usually?) forms are added by later headmasters (or important people) of the school. The school itself, however, was founded by Miyamoto Musashi. If you want to know more about the historical documents associated with the school (other than the Book of five rings, or Gorin no Sho), I would recommend contacting an authorized branch of the school and asking them if they can guide you further. I believe there is one or several in the UK, for example.

It is essential in Japanese traditional martial arts schools to pass the school forward as a living tradition. Each teacher has his teacher who again has his teacher, and so on. This "teacher line" can eventually be traced back to the founder of the school. Teacher from each generation will get a certificate of full transmission, or a "menkyo kaiden", as it is usually called, once he has received the entire body of knowledge that the tradition carries. If there are no people with menkyo kaiden left, the lineage is to be considered broken and the school extinct. So, even if there were manuals or descriptions of the techniques left at that point, it would not change the school's status as a dead art. This is the Japanese view. That being said, transmission scrolls tend to list the kata series. I am not sure how often they contain actual descriptions of the forms, but I'm sure this happens as well.

Most martial arts are devolved from their original lethal moves to fit sports, like judo did from japanese jujutsu, it removed the more dangerous techniques to fit society

Certainly the best swordsman, at least. A good clue is how he rarely even bothered with a shinken and beat most of his opponents to death with a bokken. Which is kind of hilarious when you think about it. Can you imagine how mad it must have made his opponents for him to say "Nah, I'll just use the training stick. You keep your katana. Makes it fair."
@andrewmayo9400
@andrewmayo9400 7 жыл бұрын
The boken's different weight would make the movements harder to predict. It's also probably largely an exageration. There are stories of him throwing his off hand weapon at opponents to either kill them or force a guard to an akward position that would let him strike a killing blow.

"While Musashi was in Edo, a man named Musō Gonnosuke came, looking for a match. Gonnosuke was armed with a bokutō (wooden sword). At the moment, Musashi had a willow bow, but he immediately took up a stick to confront Gonnosuke. Without even a nod, Gonnosuke attacked. Musashi struck him down in one stroke. Thwarted, Gonnosuke quit." You are wrong.

@SonOfSunTzu: You could, but wielding tachi with your left arm requires more practice if you are not ambidextrous, I think. Wakizashi is lighter than tachi, though if you have equal strength in both of your arms, with sufficient training you could wield a pair of tachi.

Is it just me, or does this not prove, that the Aiki-ken, that Morihiro Saito Sensei 9th dan aikido, as taught to him by the founder, Moriihei Ueshiba, in Iwama. The first Kumi tachi / partnered exercise is almost identical. There is historical fact that O'sensei had instructors from Kashima Shinto Ryu, visit Iwama and instruct the students there around the mid 1930's,he also registered With the KSSR, as can be seen from there records there bare O'sensei'serzonal seal and keppan or blood oath.
