Hi, may I suggest you use plexi glass instead of acrylic it has a little more durability and won’t break easily like other glasses. Also wanna say love the video very instructional and useful
@mikekrabal10 сағат бұрын
Thanks for checking out the video and for the suggestion! I have had good and bad luck with glass, acrylic and polycarbonate. In my first build, a friend broke the glass so I said no more glass. On the camper in the video, I broke the acrylic so I tried polycarbonate on my latest build. Then a tarp rubbed against that and scratched the poly all up. I haven't used plexiglass, but if it's scratch proof then I'd try it. In my head, I'm going to try glass again as it's much easier to clean without scratching. Sorry for the long response. This has been on my mind a lot recently as the last thing I have to do to the newest build is clean the poly windows and they are scratching easily... I've been working on it all morning.

I watched your build video too, this thing is awesome, the things I would add would be, pull out stairs that are attached to the trailer, add knobs to the grommet holes on circle window covers, put a thermometer in your hillbilly water heater and raise where the flame is so it’s not right over the wood to avoid any accidents. That’s just my opinion but it really is a perfect build. 👌🏻

The seat/bed is the idea I was looking for. I have been racking my brain trying to think of a simple and sturdy way to do this in my event trailer and this is it.😊

Most rv trailers are built with no drip edge at bottoms of them, the water from rain runs down the side and keeps the floor wet so it rots out, not built very well and you.pay a lot of money for them

You could stain it and gloss it with special out door water proof wood products that are designed to protect it from the rain etc. As well as keeping it undercover when not in use. They probably use the same type of products on wooden boats for protection.
@mikekrabal3 күн бұрын
On my most recent build, I used Totalboat epoxy and varnish. I may coat the camper in the video with it as well. Seems to be good stuff. Thanks for watching!

Im sorry to tell you this but the way you have your AC set up. The wooden side vents on the inside is incorrect. Those side vents need to be on the outside. Remember that that entire backside usually hangs outside the window. None of the rear of the AC should be accessible to the inside. This will affect your differential pressure and basically make your air conditioner, not function correctly.
@mikekrabal3 күн бұрын
I mostly agree with you. In testing it actually worked better than expected as seen in our follow-up video where it brought the inside temperature from 98F to 76F in an hour. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJ64fa1mm7ytmaM Still, I thought it could be more efficient so I modified it to slide in and out. That modification can be seen in the follow-up video as well. Thanks for watching!

Hopefully whenever you do your next build you get a proper water heater. Doing that stuff in the cold would be annoying. 😂

I have built another one and it has a traditinal four-gallon water heater. I decided to use something more conventional since it will be for sale and not for us. Thanks for watching!

Great video and thanks for not using some ridiculous canned music. I'm a waterproofing contractor and I'm wondering if you have had any issues with placing the OSB sheeting directly on the waterproof membrane. I've seen this before being an issue in homes without there being an air gap between the two, causing the wood to rot and mold. Just curious, not being critical.
@mikekrabal4 күн бұрын
To be honest, it just doesn't have that much usage yet. We've been camping a couple times and there's no sign of any moisture damage. Since it's a wooden camper, we keep it under a carport when not in use. It's pretty much always dry. We'll need more miles and more camping to really test it out. Thanks for checking out the build!

the only part i disagree with is the acrylic windows. 1. The first issue that arises, its single pane. its going to create moisture and ultimately fog/sweat on the inside. 2. Acrylic fogs, hazes, and over a little time will be full of micro-cracks looking terribly. i would go back and measure the windows have a company make some double pane proper windows for it. it deserves it !

Thanks for watching. I believe I'll try glass on the next one. Although I haven't had any issues with the acrylic yet.

Building from the ground up, frame and all versus starting with a cargo trailer. Would you consider using a cargo trailer?

My best guess for the material above the trailer, as you saw it in the video, is roughly $5k. I don't have an exact number for the build. But $5k is probably close. Thanks for watching!

I love your videos! If you're an apartment dweller folks don't let that stop you from camping, or very little $ for a vacation, make those memories. While I was feeling bad I couldn't take my kids to Disney Land, they just remember having spontaneous adventures. In the 2000s, I'd wake the kids up at 4am, take all the small roads to Dinosaur Valley, stopped at all night slow diners for early breakfast, checked in at 9am, they thought we were so far away. Took us 45 min to get home on the interstate. Go off season, less crowded. The best times were without tent, gear assembly, it's just a shell. But you made a hotel, I'm so impressed. These are the Good Ole Days During fire bans we brought a gadget you put this probe into water to instantly heat it up, coffee or warm wash water, works in a can of soup too. Nowadays they charge on a USB and cheap.

You'd be surprised how many parks might be near you, some areas are free but a picnic table might be all ya get. They all have season passes if you go more than 3 times a year and they're associated with parks all over. Single grandma with a toddler, reserve a cheap motel near park and just hang out in the daytime. In the '80s we'd camp in hatchback Subaru, back seats folded down to make a long bed for 3. In the'90s back of a pick up with a tarp, at dawn I woke to tornado clouds, we were out of the park in 10 minutes, honking to wake everyone up. My husband got a headache bar $20 at a garage sale & more tarps, it was perfect. He bought a used topper for $50 it was nice with windows, we used once, it became the dogs' house stored in the backyard, teens didn't fit. Cold weather we camped in Chevy Caravan put captain seats outside & covered in tarp to keep clean or left at home. One extreme coldsnap we covered the van in tarps and stayed warm all night. Muggy heat Summers we rented $20 screened in porch w/lights, electricity to plug in fan, mini microwave for popcorn or toaster oven, & picnic table inside for playing cards all night, nearby bathroom & shower at Eisenhower park $20 perfect for teens & their friends to keep an eye on them all in 1 place, tuna, beans, PB&J, Ramon, watermelon/fruit- Stopped wasting time, $ on supplies & gear after my husband died.

I enjoyed reading both of your comments as they very much reflect on the simplicity of camping in my youth as well. Thank you for sharing the tips and encouragement as so many will learn that camping with less stuff makes better stories. I have purposely designed my campers to be simple in their equipment to get the spirit of camping out of them. Your stories reminded me of one night we were tent camping along the Shenandoah river. I was a small child and it had rained a lot. It was a warm summer night. We were in a giant army green canvas tent. I literally awoke in a puddle of warm rainwater from our leaky tent. Had to scoot over a couple feet to find dry land. Thanks for sharing and for watching! It's greatly appreciated.

If the answer was in the video, somehow I’m not hearing it. Did he say how much the build cost?
@mikekrabal9 күн бұрын
I didn't list the cost in the video. I don't have an exact number, per say. I imagine a build like this with an appropriate 6x10 trailer would begin roughly at $7500 in material and go from there depending on what equipment you install. I had an extremely limited budget so I used a cheap trailer, window A/C and saved where I could. Thanks for watching and the question!
