in my opinion a coastal suburban railway would have been better, as the tram takes too long and there are bus routes as a local alternative

Nice to see the ETR470. Here in Italy they worked very well. But now they are old for us Italians have been sold a bit in Greece a bit in other countries. Now we have ETR 600 or Frecciarossa 1000

So there is a new Passage to cross the road from the Port-Gate to the station, finnally, since the Bridge was closed since years! Didnt know about this extension, great. Will take a look at it next time im there... So There is now a direct line from the port to the Airport, with Metro..
@AllThingsTrainsbyDrTesla
@AllThingsTrainsbyDrTesla 11 ай бұрын
This is the second direct line to the airport. The suburban train has been operating direct trains from the Piraeus port to the airport for years now and in less travel time too. Also the pedestrian bridge was closed due to the station's construction but is now open again, so there are 2 ways to cross now, over the road or under through the station.

Scrapped by Swiss Railways in 2015 as not good enough and unreliable, yet Brand-new to Greece in 2021. Capable of ECTS operation after full electrification from Athens to Thessaloniki. As we now know, they never got round to installing a working ECTS signalling system. Scary when you think that these train sets are capable of 250 km/h.
@AllThingsTrainsbyDrTesla
@AllThingsTrainsbyDrTesla Жыл бұрын
First of all, thank you for your comment! Now, i need to clarify a few things. The Swiss Railways have one of the highest if not the highest standards on trains in the world. A minor problem everywhere else, for the Swiss won't pass at all. Now regarding this specific train, as far is i know and I'm aware, the major issue they had was tilting mechanism that existed in the train when it was operating there. This mechanism has been completely removed before it was sent in Greece because it wasn't plan to be used at all here. Now about the ETCS, I don't know if it was installed or now when it was refurbished in Italy, but it doesn't really matter since the Greek network doesn't have working ETCS anyway. And currently the top operating speed for all trains is 160 km/h since ETCS is not operational. So it wouldn't even exceed the 160 km/h. The current trains are already operating at these speeds even though they are capable and certified for 200km/h. The ETR 470 is also certified for a top operating speed of 200 km/h, not 250. So in a nutshell, other than its modern looks (dispite older than the current trains) this doesn't offer anything new that the current trains are not already capable of doing. All trains though AND the network need to have operational ETCS in order to travel higher than 160 km/h and reach the maximum of 200 km/h. For even higher speed (that cannot be reached by any train today in Greece anyway) there would be needed even more changes to the network signaling itself and many parts of the track curves to be widened. Sorry for the long reply but i felt the need to clarify these common misconceptions that usually the media say about this specific rolling stock. :)

Well spotted my friend! Earlier the same day, while traveling to Athens the train hit a semi fallen burned tree, the impact was hard enough that a big chuck of it was stuck on the side of the train, even entering the driver cab and hitting one of the 2 chairs inside, thankfully not the conductor's seat, the other one which was empty at the moment. The train was temporarily patched up in Athens depot and went out on the journey to Thessaloniki on the same day, where it will be permanently repaired since there is the maintenance base for the ETR in Greece. It may already be fixed by now, I have no further information.

Impressive as always. I lived in Athens (one of the northeast suburbs, Ag Paraskevi) for a few years. I arrrived a year or two after lines 2 and 3 opened. I was impressed then. I would ride line 2 to the end at Ethniki Amanya then get on the bus for the slow crawl the rest of the one home. I was real glad when the airport extension opened as now I could ride to Halandri and thus save a crap load of time.

I wonder if the pedestrian overpass is still needed?
@AllThingsTrainsbyDrTesla
@AllThingsTrainsbyDrTesla Жыл бұрын
In my opinion yes. The volume of people going from line 1 to the port is still gonna be big and it wouldn't be a good idea to mix so many people on the underpass through the metro station. It would be a bit chaotic to have so many people with suitcases running down to the metro and then up again to make it to the ferry in time while at the same time many morning commuters would use the station to go to work. I think it's better to have them both so that congestion won't be an issue
