Brings back many memories for me too. I also still have photo's of similar scenes in the late 70's with Peaks on the London - Sheffield services and Choppers whistling through on the MGR trains. The smart working required to remove 1 Peak and replace with another for the reversal was always impressive to the teenage me. Still got a soft spot for a Peak.

Just heard that the Manchester to Sheffield line is to close this weekend (Easter) if only there was an alternative line to ferry passengers across the Pennines…………

Never realised MGR hoppers were hauled by electric locos. Were there coal unloading points with overhead power?
@mickd6942 Жыл бұрын
No , the coal was brought to wath yard by diesel locos, then taken by a single class 76 if 16 tonners or pair of class 76 if HAA hoppers to wombwell main junction where another class 76 or a pair would be buffered up to the back but not coupled to help push the train up the 1 in 40 worsboro bank as far as west silkstone junction where the bankers would stop as the train carried on to penistone and to motteram yard near dinting where the train would be handed over to diesel locos to take it to fiddlers ferry power station , the locos were fitted with a clearcall intercom system that allowed drivers of the leading loco to talk to drivers of banking locos via the overhead wires and such was the draw of current needed for the four electric locos to go up the worsborough bank that no other electric loco could be in the section between wombwell main junction and west silksone junction , the HAA merrygoround hoppers were used from the 70 ' but 16 ton mineral waggons were also still used a lot , my bedroom window overlooked wombwell main junction so as a child i could watch none stop class 76's .

Brilliant, I can still here the clatter of those Sulzers and the smoke and variety that was common at the time.

The class 27 push pulls were exciting to ride on, the drivers hammered them.

Great footage. I see myself on a few of the clips at New street and Reading on one of your other videos. Used to spot with Andy Wilkinson, Andy Savage,Rob Lee from Toton. Looks like 1976 and 7.

Yes Steve, I filmed this between 1976 - 1980. I would be interested to know which is you on the film, the chances of you seeing it are amazing. David.

The train that stopped outside New Street, that was me putting my head out the window. I lived close to Toton, I think we were on the one week rail tourer. We would get on at Attenborough to Derby to New Street then decide where to go from there.

The arguement against these loco's was that 1500 volts DC was too little for a modern railway. Not true as many diesel electrics are not vastly different on the traction motor side. Many substations were required which might have used mechanical converters ( AC to DC ). As these were in place to construct new loco's wasn't the no-no BR made out. If it had been my job I would have converted a Brush type 4 to see how good it would be. I dare say a 25 kV AC type would have converted. Tractive effort should be 20 % higher if the class 47. The 76/77 were not slow.

The Dutch system has been 1500VDC since after the 2nd War. It’s a modern thriving railway run entirely by electricity form renewable (wind) sources.

Wondering if you are the original owner of the footage. I remember some of the scenes and can be seen in some of the New Street and Reading footage. I lived close to Toton yard. Moved to Canada in 77. Great memories.

@@steveswancott8876 Yes Steve, I filmed this and a few other videos on youtube between 1976 - 1980. I'm amazed you saw yourself, what are the chances. I would be interested to know which is you on the film, maybe we have met at some point. These memories seem to have melted into the distant past, thank goodness for cameras. David.

Great high-wire double acts! The Woodhead electrification was always all about the Wath coal trains (O.S. Nock wrote about this operation and how the Class 76 was used over the route). I agree it was a complete waste to close it, given the huge investment in the new Woodhead tunnel, let alone everything else.
