My mother in law use to make this stew with leftovers from the fridge. I loved it and my husband hated it.

Agreed, especially with the immigrants coming over and sending what money they make back to their homeland sponging off the social security we pay for our retirement.

Sadly, there is no such thing as a "cheap meal" anymore.😢 Also, I don't think a flan qualifies as bread pudding.

I still eat many of these things; potato soup, rice pudding, bread pudding, potato pancakes, eggless pancakes, and I make molasses cookies at Christmas time. I also love love love biscuits and gravy. I used to make my husband biscuits and sausage gravy with the deer-pork sausage that he would make. So good. Now I just buy some brand of breakfast sausage and scramble fry that.

Bothe parents were raised during the Depression. I still make hot water cornbread and potato soup except I can put a whole lot more into my soup than they did.

This video needs editing by a human… for example it says 9085 instead of 1985 and the oak tree plaza… I was confused was it a store… they showed random clips of AutoZone etc…. Was it a plaza( strip mall or an actual store?!?! Also what’s up the random words at the bottom: known, store, women.

In South Louisiana where I grew up in the 60's both my parents (in their teens during the Great Depression) regularly prepared nearly all these recipes for us children. I think I make some chipped beef on toast for the first time in 50 years.

I still cook EVERY single one of these recipes. Especially the soups. I eat soup at least 5-6 days per week. I just love soup. Easy to make. Throw it all in..go about your day..an hour or 2 later it's done. And i usally make HIUGE ( 5 gal) batches.

Growing up my mom often made what we called crazy cake. As a matter of fact I showed my daughter how to make it last Friday! Potato soup is one of my favorite meals.

When I was interviewing corn farmers for my book, Midwest Maize, I found that many of them spoke fondly of corn meal mush -- something they really loved and missed now that it was less common. So interesting how beloved some of these survival foods became.

Biscuits and gravy are still regularly offered in the southern half of the Midwest. Commonly available on less expensive hotels where breakfast is included. And a few of us still make them at home.

Get your kitchen ready now, practice the recipes and learn to cost them out. I hope I'm wrong, (please come back and respond if I am. I will gladly accept it), but we are moving towards these times again. Learn to cook simple, hearty meals. When the time comes, help those in need if you can. God speed, everyone.

This was one of my favorite videos I've seen on KZbin. Having grown up in the South with two parents who went through the Great Depression, and a father who volunteered for the Army Air Corp and served in Italy during WWII, I was familiar with many of these recipes, can attest to their tastiness and being true comfort foods, and loved that you devoted an episode to them. My mom was a great cook, and clearly these dishes came from her experiences as a little girl and early adulthood...and it's very nice to hear a lot of the history behind them. As an adult, and with my parents now sadly passed, I've made some of these very dishes for myself...not as good as mom did though. The grainy film effect was also a nice touch. Thank you!! [An aside...You know, Americans used to be able to tolerate any horrible event--Great Depression, World Wars, other disasters--and rise to the occasion as one nation with similar values and fortitude. I'm afraid that some of the younger generations have been pampered, have never had to overcome true hardship or had to endure anything, and have become spoiled. There don't seem to be nearly as many "men's men" nor women who are feminine and yet also capable and resilient. I hope that America and true, patriotic Americans will pull together, return to their roots, and again thrive!]

My mom and dad both lived through the depression, many stories heard. I grew up with fried onion sandwiches, a full meal of corn on the cob or a meal of fried potatoes. The depression cake we called impossible cake - loved it. potato pancakes were common for us too, so was potato soup

Since when is food dangerous, if it's wholesome, it is fine to eat, right? Today all the "experts" would "warn" us of all sugar, butter etc. Yet all these food's gave life! To our ancestors.🥖🥚🧈🍖
