That river is so hit or miss. Last time I was there I caught a ton of suckers. Usually I will occasionally pull wild browns/rainbows out of the deeper pools though. Nothing crazy big but good sized wild browns for the area. The real issue is the otters IMO, always see some fresh tracks when im out that way. The confluence is a pretty good spot too

Yeah, those otters are bad news. Every time I see them I start wondering how much a good .22 with a silencer costs...😂 Thanks for watching!

Ive owned a Pack since the mid 90s and my trusty old Grumman 17' since 1973, with basically no mods to either. They've both caught plenty of fish, made multi-day trips, and ran plenty of whitewater they probably shouldn't have, lol. Both are still in good shape( well the old Grumman has a few dents, lol.) But now (a) Im getting old and arthritic and I need to stand up and stretch my legs every 15-30 min or I get so stove up I can barely move. (b) I dont float swift rivers much anymore, I mostly bass fish and sometimes do 1-2 night campouts on reservoirs. I almost bought a Jon boat and trailer, but instead I've decided to fully rig both canoes with stuff that I can mostly change out from boat to boat depending on circumstances. I found some really nice outrigger/stabilizers and trolling motor mount from SailBoatsToGo. Got me a 30lb thrust MinnKota and marine battery. I'm currently studying my seat options. I may even get myself one of those little Honda 2.3 hp outboards. I already have a 5x8' utility trailer I haul my canoes on so its not a big deal to haul the excess gear.

where did you find your seat ..i have a discovery 119 solo...love the boat hate the seat it sits to low
@derekspace5 ай бұрын
Dennis, that is a total home grown red neck engineered contraption. I actually just designed the seat in my head and built with raw aluminum I ordered from some online metals store. I got some pictures on my website: tie1on.net/fishpic19.htm Scroll down to the Ultralight Seat section. Thanks for watching!
@derekspace5 ай бұрын
Dennis, the gunnels of your 119 might be 2" higher than mine so you might want to raise it up to 2" under the gunnels. I'd use long bolts and make 1" spacers so you can try it at 1" under the gunnels after trying out it at 2" under...if that makes sense.

Beautiful creek with gorgeous trout. What length leader are you using?
@derekspace7 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! That leader was around 7 ft. For small creeks I'm hitting small holes and back eddies so I don't need a long leader and the shorter the leader is, the easier it is to cast under overhanging branches. In the lower part of that creek where it was much wider and open, I really should have gotten my 9 ft rod with a 9 ft leader but I didn't want to bother getting it out for the 1 hour I spent on the lower stretch.

I have way too many fly rods. A few manufacturers but mainly all TFOs and Orvis. I do have others but in general I tend ti like them. Personally my favorite is the Axiom 2x anything from 6 to 8 wt. But, after seeing this video I picoed up the 8 wt clearwater. I have many 8wts for carp, bass, reds, and speckled trout. I gotta say I like it more than the Helios 3 and my recon 2. It just feels better to me. Simiar in my memory to one of the green TFO models. I think the signature series. I really liked that rod at one time. I just did an 8wt side by side and it is now my main backup rod over the Helios 3D. It is not as accurate, it is not as light, it doesn't even feel as smooth, or can I cast 8t as far as others. But, for me it just feels better to cast and did easily put line out 75ft. I feel like the my mental work put into the cast is less thoughtful than other rods if that makes sense. So, even with it's faults 75 feet is a decent maximum range while retaining decent accuracy. For me, in practice that is laying the belly of the fly like close to what i was aiming at at X number of feet. Most casts are within 1ft at that range for me. But, I did have more errant casts than other rods. Still, just feels right. I tried wff, sink tip, and full sink. I did not like the feel quite as much with the full sink. Great video and very accurate.
@derekspace11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the input! Yeah, you said "less thought" and that is a great description of how easy that rod is to lived with all day. Thanks for watching!

🌴So tell me about your older Clearwater, I just bought one for $20 bucks at a local flea market that looks brand new , I wanted something to carry in the truck Incase I get the urge , I figured that if it had the Orvis name on it I couldn’t go wrong , the action on it seems a bit stiff and the rod isn’t a lite weight it does feel substantial, I’ll be looking for a 8-9 wt reel next , this is now my budget rod to see how cheaply I can put a combo together, 🤔
@derekspace Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, Dave! My old school Clearwater 9ft 8wt. Lets just say it gave me my PB snook, LMB, SMB, carp, catfish, redfish, and striper. Lot of years, lot of trips. It is my favorite close in combat style bass and snook rod. When ya got to cast it 30 ft and 10 of that is under over hanging branches and the fly is not small. Compared to todays rods it is slow but that makes it great for loading a rod for short casts, A bass bug taper helps.. Even with my flawed cast timing, I can cast that in wind with big flies for days. However, if ya need to lay out a 70 foot accurate cast to spooky bones in the wind you really want a faster action. That being said I have seen a guide cast mine to the backing and into a small break in the mangroves in high wind...I cannot do that. Great rod for what you want. I would look around for one of those cheap plastic reels and take the savings and put it in the line. Add a spare reel with a sink tip and you are good to go. See you on the river sometime!
@davescheer5038 Жыл бұрын
@@derekspace thanks for the info , I fish saltwater flats and was looking for a snook and redfish rod and small Tarpon, this rod seems to have plenty of back bone , as for a reel the hunt is half the fun 😄 I’d like to get a 9 wt reel only because of its larger spool capacity, all to often I’ve hooked something and didn’t have enough line ( fly lines are expensive 😳) for what I saved on the rod I’ll probably sink the money into the line and reel , been watching the budget as I’m in process of refurbishing a skiff into a nano flats skiff, 💸💸💸🥴

i have a messed up finger because of the big rock in the middle at 10:06 from this spring. mallet finger i slipped crossing, i was about to lose my right boot and thought i could use it as support and i slipped and hit the rock with my hand trying to keep from sitting down in water. i can use the finger but i can not straighten it. you are right there is bigger ones in there. i had just caught a 14 in bow and was wanting a brown for the slam. the tree over bank on the right big pool above there is where i was trying to go. needless to say i gave up after the fall. i sent this video to my son, just below the bridge he was ahead of me one time and waded up on a woman squatted pooping facing away from him lol he seen the video and said is that the poop spot. that was couple years ago. we made it past the bridge in the deep hole (his favorite spot) and a dude was taking a bath in the hole lol. that was a trip and a half. we tried other side this last trip. dude was fishing in neoprene waders in july in middle of the creek, but the smell of skunk was strong with this one we could smell it from the road. he was so high he was floating. we slowed down and i asked him if he caught anything, it was like talking to cheech and chong. then at another creek out of nowhere a dude on a tube ran into me bout took me out. i think i will stay to the other side of the park where you was at here
