Thank you for the tip on the SkyView app! Last night, I downloaded and used the free Lite app while stargazing with my telescope. SkyView is very helpful with some very calming music! I have a few other free star viewing apps for now. In time, I may upscale to the paid version of the SkyView app.

The edge of Co Durham north south as Edmundbyers is on the northern edge of Co Durham.There is actually a bus to Edmundbyers which is the Consett to Townfield service twice a day Monday to Friday and run by Weardale.

Although I have never seen the stars from the rear of a VW Beetle I remember flying from Rio de Janiro to Madrid with Iberia overnight and seeing Scorpius hanging in the sky from the aircraft's window.

Great video! I am almost a beginner (last owned scope 45 years ago). Unfortunately, prices have gone up quite a bit due to inflation and industry consolidation, but still, there's something for every budget.

What do you think about Celestron Inspire 100 AZ. Or the other 80AZ and 70AZ of this model? It is recomended for beginners like myself.
@amarbirk89874 ай бұрын
Always go for bigger aperture,so I'd say inspire 100 as it is 100mm aperture. Look at it as a light bucket,so you want biggest bucket in order to collect more light. You can see dimmer objects (deep space objects) and contrast on planets should be better,in theory. As it is an achromatic refractor, at higher magnifications,you may experience some chromatic obberation(purple fringe around bright objects such as moon as jupiter) but longer the f ratio,the less CO you will have due to longer refractor tube(ota)

Speaking of satellites there was a pub in Billingham,Co Durham (between Hartlepool and Stockton) called the Telstar and another called the Astronaut.Sadly the Telstar has become an animal now,the Lion i think although it probably crossed Leo ,and maybe Leo Minor, many times during its working life.

@paganphil1004 ай бұрын
@geoffreywray4235: Yes, you will be able to see Jupiter, Saturn, Venus and probably Mars but they will appear very small......don't expect large NASA-type views. A telescope with a longer focal length (1000mm or more) and wider aperture (102mm or more) would be a lot better though.

Hey sorry probably completely wrong place to ask this as not eclipse related. Have been to kielder a couple of times now, not gotten lucky with the weather so far but will Keep trying as all the family love the talks you do. We bought a Newtonian and love it. But then I see a lot of digital cameras that attach to the computer apparently offering a lot for the money. Are they worth a go?
@thecelticcorrespondent92578 ай бұрын
Hi Alex - I visited Kielder last summer, but the clouds closed in for me too. The night was still really enjoyable though. Regarding the camera, I bought a modest Astro-camera a couple of years ago (Altair GP Cam 327). It couples up to my 6 inch GoTo telescope and my laptop of course. It has been a wonderful investment. I have some fantastic pics. The camera does three things - 1. It cuts through light pollution (I have to contend with a powerful street light right on the edge of my property). 2. It gives me a permanent record (in colour) of what I am viewing (galaxies, nebulae, globular clusters) 3. It allows me to see objects a full six or seven magnitudes fainter than with the scope alone - in practice this can be down to around 18th or 19th magnitude. The GP Cam was probably the wrong camera to start with (it has a small field of view and a high magnification) and I've had a few frustrating nights, but I would still thoroughly recommend the purchase. (A GoTo or a motorised mount is a must for astrophotography though). Hope this helps!

hey, great video. i was thinking about picking up a stargazing telescope. but it kinda hit me like -- whats the point? aren't the average dude just gonna look into a stargazer and go "huh, thats cool" and never pick it up again? dont know if my question makes sense, because it seems very pretty and gives me a reason to go outside :)

Hi Helena … firstly , I’ve followed your channel and really like your videos , but , you described a telescope as an instrument that “magnifies” … it has to be said that a telescope is an instrument that captures light … the magnification comes from the Eyepiece . The dobsonian error I believe was noted by another viewer but it is a good point . Dobsonian related to the base or mount . Named after John Dobson . Sorry I hope you don’t think I’m being pedantic here but the first point raised is really important Keep up the good work
