Our customers provide the championship plates to us. This type of leather wrestling belt when finished would cost approximately $350 Canadian currency. The cost would depend on the width and length of the leather. I don't know where customers buy the plates from. Some customers take them off cheap belts made of vinyl and have us put them on our quality custom made leather wrestlling belts. Some customers make their own championship plates.

I'm putting it on an old leather table top. How long should I let it sit?Do I need to buff it?
@LeathersmithDesigns
@LeathersmithDesigns 4 ай бұрын
My experience in using neatsfoot oil has always been with undyed vegetable tanned leather or with vegetable tanned leather that we hand dyed but have not yet applied a polish (finish coat). This is on leather products we are making. We don't need to buff the leather after the oil is absorbed but we let the leather sit for an hour to overnight after the oil has been applied to allow it to even out. Note that some finished leathers may have a top coating on it that will prevent the neastfoot oil from being absorbed. That may be the situation with the leather on your table top but I don't know. The neatsfoot oil container lists all kind of leather products that you can apply it on. However, I don't have experience in that and would therefore suggest the following: 1. Test a small area first. 2. Apply in small amounts with a soft cloth to just dampen the surface 3. Be aware it may darken your leather

Does it soften the belt?
@LeathersmithDesigns
@LeathersmithDesigns 5 ай бұрын
The pure neatsfoot oil makes the belt a little more flexible but I would not say soft. I mainly put it our vegetable tanned tooling leather belts to condition and preserve the leather as leather alcohol dye tend to dry the leather. We compensate for this by adding oils back into the leather belt. On the undyed vegetable tanned tooling leather belts, I mainly apply it as it makes a nice color. Also on the undyed and dyed belts, it adds a bit of water repellency to the leather. To give the leather a nice sheen, I apply Fiebings Resolene to the leather as a last step. The pure neatsfoot oil and resolene are available at leathersmithdesigns.com/leather-dyes-polishes-oils/

I have spent many years working with water based contact cement and to me this looks like a very bad idea
@LeathersmithDesigns
@LeathersmithDesigns 6 ай бұрын
This is a proven machine that has been used successfully in leather production facilities for many decades. We have used it in our own production facility for years in the production of purses. The commercial water based contact cements we used are for production facilities and the contact cement remains tacky for days so leather parts can be assembled at a much later time. They are not contact cements that you can buy at a hardware store. We used to spend half a day applying contact cement to large quantities of leather parts. We would put the glued pieces on racks and then over the next few days attach the leather pieces together when we had time. The Schaefer Machine Co. has been manufacturing these machines in USA for many decades for factories. We also used it to apply contact cement to #8 YKK nylon coil zippers. This is a video of our own 8 inch edge coating machine. You can also see a demo from the manufacturer on a smaller machine at kzbin.info/www/bejne/mWXJYaWAortqaqc

With this type of weave, many people don't add anything else to secure the end. However, we add a rivet for a little extra security. However, you are correct, a chicago screw is much strong than a rivet and easier to replace than having to drill out a rivet. Sometimes when we use chicago screws on other projects, we might add a drop of thread Loctite threadlocker to prevent the screw from accidentally loosening. We also sell chicago screws (screw posts) at leathersmithdesigns.com/leather-fasteners-spikes-studs/

My personal feeling is the braided leather dog leash is just as strong as the unbraided leather dog leash. However, I have not tested them side by side to see if one is stonger than the other. I would suggest the 1 inch width as opposed to narrower for large breed dogs.

I do minimal leather work. Maybe I'll have time when I get moved to my barn. Just wanted to share about the wood work tools my Daddy bought in the 40s, all Craftsman tools. I was 3 years or so (1950) when I watched him build a bookcase in the backyard. Our yard was sloped, So he stored the saws, a 6" and 10" table saw, a turning lathe, and a plainer jointer under the back of the house. It was about 5' off the ground. The bookcase is in my barn, along with all my parents furniture they started, housekeeping as they called it. All four of us were born in the bed, they bought in 1935, which is in my barn loft. My Dad and I built furniture during the 70s with these same tools, China cabinets, picnic tables, Adirondack chairs, porch swings, and childrens flip-top desks. The Craftsman tools are all at the barn, soooo that's where I need to be. Daddy extended the lathe to 12 foot, so he could turn horizontal piece that goes between the two legs of a king size bed. All still working, and think all still have the original motors! I don't know how to post pictures... But look up the 10" table saw. It has a blade that comes up from beneath, behind the saw blade. It has a handle like the short ditching shovel. There's a rail system underneath that the motor, sawblade, rides, and that handle will pull the everything across the table. Appears to be a precursor to the radial arm saw. They just took everything from underneath an put it above the saw. Thanks for letting an old man share my walk on memory lane. God Bless

I use a piece of scrap leather from our leather shop as a cutting pad under the leather product I am punching holes though. I have seen some leather workers just punching though the leather product on the wood grain end. However, like you, I would not do that as I don't think the punches would last that long either. I use a piece of scrap leather under the leather product so as to not punch into the tree stump. Doing leatherwork full time, I have so much thick scrap leather laying around that I just throw a piece on the stump when needed and that has kept my punches still working after using them daily since the 1970's. I mention further in the video about the importance of using cutting boards and poundo boards when using punches which we also supply at leathersmithdesigns.com/shears-knives-cutters-for-leather-craft

@@LeathersmithDesigns i''m not saying to do it this way... Jim J mentioned the damage it would cause. Going between the grains (splitting) would be easier on the punch, chisel, even an axe than cutting the grain. I sure the leather cushion would be better on the tool.

You are so welcome and am glad you enjoyed our leather craft tutorial. There are so many neat things that can be made in leather. Although I have been making leather goods for close to half a century, I am still in awe of the many leatherworking skills I can still yet learn when I see the amazing handmade products that other crafters show on the internet. Here are some thoughts in an article of when I first started handcrafting leather goods: leathersmithdesigns.com/blogs/leather-craft-on-shoestring-budget/

Do I need to polish and oil after ?

When we make our leather goods from vegetable tanned leather also called tooling leather, we always oil and polish after we dye for a more finished product. Alcohol leather dye can dry the leather. The neatsfoot oil helps keep the leather from drying out by adding more conditioners. The resolene polish gives a nice shine and helps seal the dye to prevent any rub off from the dye. You don't have to oil and polish but it makes a higher quality product.
