A tree stump is the perfect workbench for leatherworking. The tree stump is solid so there is not any bounce when driving your hole punch tool through the leather or for using setter tools available at leathersmithde... . It is nice and solid for attaching a metal anvil to as well for when you are setting rivets and snaps. Leathercraft tools can be hung around the tree stump for easy accessibility. See a variety of leatherworking tools used in our leather shop as well as supplied to other leathercrafters. Check our website for a large variety of leathercraft supplies available.

I do minimal leather work. Maybe I'll have time when I get moved to my barn. Just wanted to share about the wood work tools my Daddy bought in the 40s, all Craftsman tools. I was 3 years or so (1950) when I watched him build a bookcase in the backyard. Our yard was sloped, So he stored the saws, a 6" and 10" table saw, a turning lathe, and a plainer jointer under the back of the house. It was about 5' off the ground. The bookcase is in my barn, along with all my parents furniture they started, housekeeping as they called it. All four of us were born in the bed, they bought in 1935, which is in my barn loft. My Dad and I built furniture during the 70s with these same tools, China cabinets, picnic tables, Adirondack chairs, porch swings, and childrens flip-top desks. The Craftsman tools are all at the barn, soooo that's where I need to be. Daddy extended the lathe to 12 foot, so he could turn horizontal piece that goes between the two legs of a king size bed. All still working, and think all still have the original motors! I don't know how to post pictures... But look up the 10" table saw. It has a blade that comes up from beneath, behind the saw blade. It has a handle like the short ditching shovel. There's a rail system underneath that the motor, sawblade, rides, and that handle will pull the everything across the table. Appears to be a precursor to the radial arm saw. They just took everything from underneath an put it above the saw. Thanks for letting an old man share my walk on memory lane. God Bless

Thanks for sharing. Good tools do certainly last a long time. My favorite oblong punches made by C.S. Osborne in USA certainly stood the test of time as I have been using the same punches in my leather shop since the mid 1970's. When you get your work area moved into the barn, you should have lots of space to do your leatherwork. I use a piece of scrap leather from our leather shop as a cutting pad under the leather product I am punching holes though. I have seen some leather workers just punching though the leather product on the wood grain end. However, like you, I would not do that as I don't think the punches would last that long either. I use a piece of scrap leather under the leather product so as to not punch into the tree stump. Doing leatherwork full time, I have so much thick scrap leather laying around that I just throw a piece on the stump when needed and that has kept my punches still working after using them daily since the 1970's. I mention further in the video about the importance of using cutting boards and poundo boards when using punches which we also supply at leathersmithdesigns.com/shears-knives-cutters-for-leather-craft

he isn't cutting across the fibers of the wood, he's going between the ends of the fibers.

My understanding as you mentioned is you can use punches on the end grain of a wood block but not across the grain. Although, I still choose to use a piece of 9 oz scrap leather as s cutting pad as I did in the video when I punch holes since I have so much of these little scrap pieces laying around the shop.

@@LeathersmithDesigns i''m not saying to do it this way... Jim J mentioned the damage it would cause. Going between the grains (splitting) would be easier on the punch, chisel, even an axe than cutting the grain. I sure the leather cushion would be better on the tool.

Thanks for sharing to the conversation. I imagine you must have learned a lot of woodworking skills from your Dad. Woodworking is the one skill I get frustrated with, as the project never seems to go easily and straight forward as it shows on instruction videos.

The tree stump which is used in many leatherworking shops certainly makes a sturdy inexpensive work surface. I have been using this tree stump since the 1970's in our leather shop. I used to also have a smaller tree stump that I could easily carry arround and take to craft shows when I was punching holes and riveting buckles on leather belts. I find the tree stump to be great place to easily access your leather tools hanging on it such as round hole punches, oblong hole punches and strap end punches which are supplied by leathersmithdesigns.com/tools-for-leather-craft/

I also like the nice solid base that the tree stump provides for punching holes in leather. When I did craft shows, I used to take a small stump for punching holes in belts and as a base for a small anvil to set rivets for attaching the buckle. I had the belts in long lengths and attached the buckle on the spot for the customers. Here is a blog that mentions how I got the tree stump at leathersmithdesigns.com/blogs/leather-craft-on-shoestring-budget/
