Halo CE had some of the most experimental multiplayer maps. Like boarding action where you have two space ships with 5 levels and the vacuum of space between them. Each floor on both ships had teleporters which allowed players to warp from one to the other. Chiron was also one that utilized teleporters in an interesting way. This area was a labyrinth with teleporters all over the place linked to one another in a seemingly random pattern. It made navigation tricky and confusing though it is possible to commit how all the teleporters link together to memory.

Not as thorough as I had hoped. Halo 4 and Halo Infinite aren't exactly restricted by narrative or realism any more than the CE maps were. What has held Halo's multiplayer level design back is the same thing that holds AAA multiplayer level design back as a whole: Avoidance of uncertainty. You touched on it a little with "the rule of cool". We're at a time where any risks that may result in players leaving the game is not worth it because active users are potential customers. As long a shitty people hold the reigns, AAA level design will continue to stagnate. This is also part of the reason so many great original forge maps are ignored in favor of remakes. Instead of creating new classics, they ride the coat tails of past success. This is the most egregious example of this AAA trend because they rely on the community to provide content so they don't have to pay as many level designers.

This is the best video discussing the evolution of Halo multiplayer. Quick, concise, and unbiased is the way to go I'm tired of opinionated Fanboys making hour-long videos talking about why Sprint is good or bad. Halo should be a mix of fun and competitive game modes. That's the reason we have infection (Fun energetic sandbox) and SWAT (Aim based skill check).

I remember so many halo 2 maps by name, i can only name plaza in halo 5. I feel like that map was the most halo in 5

What is crazy, given this new focus on making the multiplayer maps behave in a certain way we would not have gotten some of the most iconic maps. Zanzibar and lockout would not fit this paradigm of we have to make both bases exactly the same and everything the same looking arena. The maps are smaller so you almost never go more than 10 seconds without running into an enemy so it becomes quick twitch muscles and landing shotd, but the plotting is just as important. Like in design the blank space is just as important.

Because Bungie created the multiplayer from the mindset of it being a fun party game, and because of that creativity was at the centerpiece of map creation. Bungie halos were games that could be played competitively, but it was mainly supposed to be a game you’d have fun playing with your friends - after you finished the campaign. 343 created h5 and infinite with the mindset of making it SUPER ULTRA COMPETITIVE, therefore destroying creativity for ensuring everything is balanced, fair, and nothing is too overpowered to maintain player retention. Which is ironic, because this mentality to nerf and destroy everything to make everything painstakingly fair is what killed the title and makes it feel super generic. Infinite is a meme because they said it’s supposed to be an esport game. But the maps, hidden mmr, true skill 2, and the weapons on each map (and lack-thereof) suggests the opposite. It’s a game created for pros at its foundation, but in practice since release all of its updates have been catered to the average gamer and trying to ensure their retention. They remove power weapons and power ups to make everything fair. There’s no powerful map positions on any of the maps, like there were in prior games that took skill to hold. You just run around each map almost aimlessly trying to decide what your next move is, instead of creating and sticking to set ups. Infinite is like a Ferrari with a Prius engine in it. It has potential to be great, but it’s super generic and disappointing most of the time. The games a massive contradiction, and a new dev needs to start creating Halo. Even the content in infinite vs 5 is severely lacking. They want Halo to be a cash cow, and because of that they can’t risks and have fun creating a fun game. They’re forced to create what they think will sell well.

Bungie created and inspired. 343 industries copy and pasted. Everything wrong with halo now is fundamentally because they not only didn’t make and earn the halo franchise, but that they were also so incompetent that any other project would’ve been a dead on arrival. It’s sad seeing the front runner and epitome franchise that everyone copied becoming a bargain bin haze experience with each and every new title released. There’s still a gap that no other game has properly filled in of the gameplay of halo 2-3 in its arena shooter multiplayer and dynamic and sandbox campaign. It really makes you scratch your head wondering how low halo has sunk, and wether or not that was a conscious decision by the owners of the brand to make it a piss poor watered down soy variety of the old games

One of my issues with 343 summed up at 6:54. The whole everything is lore is ridiculous and actually hurts immersion rather than improving it. Not everything in real life is engineered perfectly in a space to make it look the most practical optimized version it can be anyway so as long as you have some of the flavor, you can have some of the nonsensical design. Your maps aren't going to be scrutinized at a cinema sins level by the community. Focus should be on art, fun, and balance. Not realism. I haven't touched Infinite since launch week or so. Forge has been its greatest strength and kept me somewhat interested from a distance. Core gameplay and the maps are both lacking for me, I just prefer Halo 2 and Halo 3 without sprint and I think Halo 5 was the best of the advanced movement games in terms of going all the way with that concept.

I know this is late to the party but one thing I enjoy with Infinite is the custom maps people have created. I have issues with lag on my console so I don't play a lot of multiplayer in it yet. That you can play against bots on custom maps works for what I want.
