I’m visiting there soon on a cruise. I hope they don’t mind cruise ships. It’s a small one, so not too many people all at once.

This is my absolute FAVORITE historical obsession and has been for years… caught the original film by chance on tv one day and couldn’t turn away, and since then I’ve grabbed up (still finding more and more texts even some out of print and by unknown writers!)every single book that exists about French Guiana penal colonies… memoirs, biographies, academic texts, movies, documentaries, EVERYTHING! I was shaken more by Dry Guillotine than Papillons book even though it’s an absolute masterpiece! Even the remake is pretty commendable. However, just for funsies look up that 1973 prison exploitation film named 𝘐 𝘌𝘚𝘊𝘈𝘗𝘌𝘋 𝘋𝘌𝘝𝘐𝘓𝘚 𝘐𝘚𝘓𝘈𝘕𝘋! starring Jim Brown (seriously) that was actually sued for plagiarizing McQueens film as they’re basically identical snd released around the same time. Thanks for this fantastic documentary, not enough of these barbaric stories exist about the colonies. This is now definitely part of my Devils Island library!! Great film!

"people who are 'bigger'"?! Uh, what?! I dated a Samoan girl who's family is from A. Samoa, (connected to the Seaus ( they're ALL related). Samoans are NATURALLY THE LARGEST (AND STRONGEST) PEOPLE ON EARTH! THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT! THE WOMEN ARE BEAUTIFUL!😂🎉❤

I really enjoyed the film and the amount of love behind it. As a filmmaker, I also saw how much the efforts were done to do all these beautiful footages and to create an artwork out of it. I carry both nationalities, Dominica as well as Syria. It was a surprise to hear about the Syrian Essa (Big Daddy). I only disagree with his statements on Muslim-Christian relationship in Syria. I feel, for the sake of fairness and humanity, I need to say that the statements aren’t fair at all and that what he mentioned doesn’t reflect reality. While I know that statements are personal, but adding them as part of our films and artworks will give them legitimacy. I saw how much love was behind the film and I wish it will stay fair. Please do more of these great films.

Hang on a minute. I just got to the part where the narrator tried to pass off the blame for this mass murder from “Religious extremism”, to “Atheistic Communism”. What a load of utter BS. Let’s not forget that Jones was an evangelical pastor. Neither atheism, nor communism deserves any blame for what happened in Jonestown. The blame lies squarely at the feet of a narcissistic, paranoid cult leader & control freak who was high on amphetamines. His whole world came crashing down around him the minute those who weren’t indoctrinated had the courage to ask Leo Ryan for help.
