I was fortunate to pick up the three disc set THE OTIS REDDING STORY back in 1993. I think it had 60 tracks, and most are amazing. I remember "You Left the Water Running" and how much I enjoyed it. It almost sounds like an outtake; It's as if they weren't sure they would keep/release it. We are so lucky that they did. I am torn between Otis Redding and Sam Cooke as my favorite male vocalist of any genre...😊

Is this a duet? Can an additional voice that comes in on the chorus be attributed to an overdub Otis made at Muscle Shoals? Dave Marsh sheds no light on the possibility. Maybe I'm hearing things.

He does play guitar upside down! I thought he strung regular guitars left handed like Jimmy Hendrix and Kurt Cobain, but no he's playing it upside down. I had a friend play like that. It can make some easy chords hard to play, but it also gives you a unique sound.

Though I prefer the original (fat bass sound, horn stabs, classic '70s orchestration etc...), this shows that the mark of a great song is it's still great if you break it down as much as you can like here. Or Roxanne...

The lead singer Phil Trim who wrote the lyrics is from Trinidad And Tobago The song went to no1 in Spain. Phil also wrote the English Lyrics to Mammy Blue, a hit for the group "Stories"
