Mario Bros. is a good game, but it was just a little before my time, and very much representative of the earlier era of games (simple gameplay, few levels, etc.). It paved the path for Super Mario Bros., though, which is an everlasting memory for many of us NES kids. Nintendo embraced Mario, turning him into the quintessential video game mascot that defined the '80s into today. I suspect that no other mascot has the recognition or number of appearances in various media.

Super Mario Bros. was "the" leap forward in video game technology for us '80s kids. Sure, there were other classics for the NES, but nearly all of us had the original SMB, thanks to it being packed in with many systems. Previously, I'd played Atari games packing a handful of levels (at most), primitive sounds and graphics, and simple gameplay that usually just rinsed and repeated rather than offering any sort of conclusion. Go for the high score and play until you finally exhausted your lives. Suddenly, we had the ability to run, power up, and maneuver our protagonist through 32 unique levels that led to a satisfying ending. Super Mario Bros. 2 was a step up in graphics and gameplay options. Mario and Luigi were mere pallet swaps in the original, while the (real) Princess was a helpless NPC only encountered after defeating the final level, and Toad was basically the imposter Princess from the first seven worlds. Now, we got to choose from four characters with different playstyles and advantages/disadvantages. Even so, it was just...different...from what we grew to expect from Super Mario games. I enjoyed playing it, but never really considered it as a true Mario game, which in hindsight is true. Super Mario Bros. 3 was something altogether different, sporting graphics that us early NES owners wouldn't have fathomed, and offering a far broader playing experience, despite the reduction of playable characters. There's a reason why SMB3 and Super Mario World still usually compete in some circles for the title of best Super Mario game. All told, the '80s SMB games and their 16-bit successors hold a place in the hearts of many of us, as comical as that might seem to some. I'm enjoying the content thus far and looking forward to watching more.

Some of my favorite games are Mario Land, Batman, TMNT Fall of the Foot Clan, Solar Striker, Golf, and Skate or Die Bad n' Rad, but there are so many great games.

Old dubs would always default to second syllable emphasis "becuz it's foreign and weird", but nowadays I've seen the opposite problem like Yagami in Death Note being mispronounced as YAgami when it should be yaGAmi. Everyone should just have a Japanese friend to verify pronunciations. XD
