I wish you had some to show from your harvest! I find these beans are perfect sautéed in butter with some breadcrumbs and fresh garlic mmm yum! Never grew this variety but seen it everywhere! Didn’t know it was an AAS variety either! Some of our best classic vegetable varieties like Black Beauty Zucchini and Sugar Snap Peas! Love to grow them! I planted some peas and some beans now for the fall. I’m going to also be planting some beets, leek, scallion, and radish as well :) wishing you the best!

My tree is getting large and if I do not prune in the early spring it will soon be over my patio. I have watched a few videos on pruning large branches in the middle to open up the middle of the tree to provide more sun and help provide more of a lateral growth. The main trunk is about 14" high and about 5" wide and the branches off the trunk are about 2-3 " wide. Will pruning the long branches low closer to the trunk harm the tree? I usually prune after the final frost when the leaves start to bloom. Thanks, Ben
@fairfieldgarden74843 ай бұрын
@@benstonecipher6593 Ben, you can prune side branches after harvest in the summer to control height. Then do detail pruning in the winter before bud break and open center on the main trunk. Take care.
@benstonecipher65933 ай бұрын
@@fairfieldgarden7484 Thanks so much for your response. I plan to cut the long branches in the middle after the last frost. I want the long side branches to stay and grow sideways. Some are already about 6-7 ft and horizontal to the ground. Should I prune the small branches off of the large horizontal branch growing up or down. Does it matter. I also have branches growing towards the ground. Should I prune those or let them grow? Thanks so much for your input!
@fairfieldgarden74842 ай бұрын
@@benstonecipher6593 Ben, are you pruning to an espalier form with additional support for the long branches? I cut back or off downward branches because they eventually will try to grow upward and crisscross with other branches. You can always experiment with it. In my video, I showed how the tree had a large trunk detached from the main truck from storm impact. Keep your natural elements in mind. Hurricane Beryl didn’t damage my fig tree at all this time since I keep the main trunk and limps short.

With what amd how to fertilize
@fairfieldgarden74845 ай бұрын
I add composted chicken manure to the soil when prepping. Apply slow release 5-10-15 fertilizer after small beans form. This variety is short lived in Houston so one application is enough.

Beautiful tree! I'm in Zone 9a too in Cypress. I've got several fig trees in containers that are producing and I am rooting MANY more! I am still trying to decide which I want to put in the ground. I have a lot of the LSU varieties and I'm leaning towards some those going in ground this year or next. Did you amend the soil your dug out when you planted this tree? I have to dig through so much clay and compacted material from when the subdivision I live was built that it is hard to get some trees going. Do you have any other fig trees?
@fairfieldgarden74846 ай бұрын
Thanks, Scott. No soil amendment at planting so roots get used to growing in clay. I also have Smith and Little Ruby figs in the ground and 3 more varieties rooting that are ready for planting. Go luck with your trees.

In Cypress, TX. My lettuce, chives, onions, and leeks all did fine. I also have a patch of bronze fennel for the swallow tail butterflies. It did just fine. I planted red potatoes in December. They were about 10 to 12 inches tall. They froze to the ground and I'm hoping they come back. I find some purple potatoes at Lowe's in Cypress about a week ago. I bought a pack and I'm thinking of putting them in soon. They also had a 10 pack of bareroot strawberries that I bought. They are tiny and I'm going to be surprised if they grow. But they are in the ground!
@fairfieldgarden74848 ай бұрын
I tried strawberries for several years and between birds, ants and bugs, did not have much to enjoy. Your strawberries may not have enough time to establish for much fruits this year but if they make it through our summer with lots of runner new plants, you will have plants to grow in the fall for harvest next year.

Hopefully we don't get frost this coming week! I lost a 15 ft Moro Blood orange and a Bloomsweet grapefruit almost as tall in Uri. I have 2-3 year old meyers lemon, blood orange and a satusuma. I also have large pear, persimmon and jujube trees. Plus blackberries and blueberries. I used to grow Ison, but I was the only one that liked them, so I gave it away. I am so in love with this rose . May I ask what type of structure you used ? material and dimensions? Did you intertwine the branches on the support or allowed it to grow on top and secured it ? Thank you !
@fairfieldgarden7484 Жыл бұрын
Yvonne, the trellis was made with 3 cattle panels measuring 50” x 16 ft to form the arch, held together with 12 t-posts (4 per panel), secured with clips. The branches were just growing over the trellis without ties. The weight and intertwining branches held them securely together. Even heavy winds in thunder storms could not blown them off. Good luck.
