My attempt before watching: I showed that f if p is a number of the form m/2^n where m and n are integers, then f(x+p)=f(x) for all x and hence, f(m/2^n) = f(0). This is easy to show by considering convergence of the subsequence f_2^n. Show that numbers of the form m/2^n are dense in R. We're done using continuity of f.

It will become easier after experience.Don't worry ,to qualify TIFR exam, it is enough to solve 15-20 problems properly.So try to do that. Read concepts very well ,try to solve excercises of standard books ,you will get idea
