Well I was shocked too that there was nothing in german while being on the JFK airport. And not one salesperson could even answer me as i walked to them and asked 'Sorry do you speak deutsch'.
@HeatherTravels3 күн бұрын
Well, just under 100 million people speak German as their mother tongue, but 1.35 billion people speak English, so that does not actually surprise me. In the United States, you are much more likely to find Spanish speakers than any other language besides English. It's very difficult to even find German language classes in U.S. schools.
@DamnOldAlready3 күн бұрын
@@HeatherTravels I know, it was sarcastic. Knowing english aint no problem for europeans, we kinda all know it and even understand the bri'ish (mostly). It is just irritating hearing americans complaining about other languages in other countries.

We definitely weren't complaining. We were just genuinely surprised by how many people we encountered who genuinely did not speak any English at all, and felt that it was important for travelers to know that they should be prepared to learn some German if they're going to travel to Germany.

Hello fellow Wisconsinite! I picked up on your accent right away. 😉 My husband and I visited Germany last fall and toured Neuschwanstein Castle. It was a gorgeous time of year for us, sorry the weather wasn't the best on your trip. 😕 We have friends who live there, so instead of a train, we were fortunate to be able to drive. Hope the rest of your trip was great. It's such a beautiful country.

Hi. Really pleased I saw this review and that this hotel seems to be ok. I am cruising to Alaska out of Seattle in June and as a Brit I was astounded at the cost of hotels downtown. I was also really strugging to find any hotels with even half decent reviews and many in the airport area I was worried about numerous comments about safety. I had booked and then cancelled the Fairfield by Marriott, Holiday Inn Express and Country Inn all along the same highway because there were too many negatives and as we are staying two nights before the cruise I was beginning to wonder if we would be safe going out to the monorail and even if the hotels I had chosen were safe enough to leave our luggage during the day, silly I guess, but this hotel looks slightly newer and a bit more secure, non opening windows and no comments about it being in a "sketchy" area or anyone feeling unsafe, would you agree? Hopefully made the right choice now, seems it may have been refurbished too since your stay. As we are there in June hoping that the air conditioning works ok, American hotel pictures all seem to show really old fashined a/c units under the window rather than built in to the walls as you find here in Europe. Did you remember if the a/c worked ok and kept the rooms cool as my partner gets very claustrophobic if too hot. Thanks again for posting 🙂
@HeatherTravels12 күн бұрын
I understand your concerns, as I lived in London for a time, and we were in Europe just a few weeks ago, and I always feel much safer walking around in Europe than I do in the U.S. We felt totally safe walking around in this area, and yes, the a/c worked great, which we definitely needed as it was very hot the day before our cruise. There were lots of other cruisers staying at the hotel and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to you. I hope you enjoy your Alaska cruise!

I’ve never traveled abroad and my lack of language skills are a big reason - I get nervous traveling to new places in the US where I speak the language! Although, I am surprised you didn’t encounter more English speakers. Our small Midwestern town hosted a lot of exchange students … obviously they were students who studied English, but the German students always seemed to have almost native proficiency and so I just always ASSumed that a lot of Germans spoke English (and spoke it very well). I’d love to visit Germany, but on a tour or something with a guide to interpret! I am not a brace traveler!

Excited to see Neuschwanstein Castle vlog! Was nice to see some mountains. It seemed strange to me too that they didn't offer food or drinks on the trains for that early in the morning. At least there was a little shop before you got on the 2nd train. When you get up early you don't always have time to eat but I guess your showing us its a good tip to have emergency snacks in case. Your doing good in a country with little English be proud of yourself for doing things.

I miss the Christmas markets. We'll be heading back to the EU in August 2025. This time it will be Spain because we have a house there. My wife, who is German, hates cold weather. I keep telling her she is from a cold weather country. This time I am looking forward to traveling more. We missed out on 3 years when we lived in Germany. It's a great country. Don't be put off, initially, by Germans as they might seem a bit rude or "stand offish." Once you get around that, they are friends for life. We lived outside of Leipzig (former East Germany). Our little town had a site on Facebook, so I made friends way before we went. One friend was more American than I was, 2 Ford Mustang cars, cowboy boot, big Texas belt buckle and cowboy hat. We'll definitely go back to see the old house and our friends. Good times. Enjoy your time there.

Pro-tip for your next time in Germany: The things you bought in the pharmacy would have been half the price or even less if you bought them in a "Drogerie" like dm or Rossmann. They are like a Walgreen's but w/o the prescription drugs - in Germany those can only be bought in pharmacies. But for the other drugstore stuff, always go to a Drogerie. ;-) Hope you enjoyed your stay in Munich!

Nice video, but you should use your little wondermachine called Mobile phone to translate signs, even if this is kind of cheating, what it isn´t. Also I doubt, that the hop on hop of are part of the public transport system. but owned by private companies. Of course europeans pasteurize, but this is also heated on ultra high tempretures, that´s why it isn´t cooled.
@HeatherTravels26 күн бұрын
In many situations, a person does not have time to stand there and use an app to translate a sign. Also, we did not get on the hop on - hop off bus; we got on a public city bus. We did a tour on the hop on - hop off bus on a different day and that video will be coming.

The church & art gallery were great finds for not knowing your way around. I agree there should be a sign on the or beside the door saying Entrance but you found it. Taking a city bus was a great idea its fun to go in other countries grocery stories & you can get drinks & snacks.

Every time we get a new box, it’s just a reminder of a bad decision to pay for this. We hated everything in all first 3 boxes we got. I mean EVERY SINGLE THING. There’s no way to choose snacks or to avoid things you hate. Tried to cancel after the 3rd box and we were told we cant. We have to keep on receiving until the end of the year. They should just refund the other 9 boxes. Terrible experience. We hate spicy stuff. Thats most of what they send. Cheap stuff. With this kind of money grabbing attitude they lose the chance of repeat customers. I would NEVER send this to someone I like. I was thinking about giving one year subscription to friends for their birthday. But after all this bad experience, not a chance. 🤮

Your last minute trip maybe turned out for the best because you could see the Christmas markets. The churchs looked so beautiful. Yes the fare is 2.75 or 6 hr pass for $6(?) And the kiosk for tickets are at the level between the stairs from the airport and to the loading area on the train. If the light rail police catch you without a ticket I think it's a $200 fine

We don’t cancel flights here in Fargo much either! The upper Midwest is truly an experience in winter 😂 It’s been very foggy here as well. Magic school bus is still great! Idc how old I am! I wish I wasn’t terrified of flying. I flew to Baltimore a couple years ago and back and the end result wasn’t great. It actually affected my mental health for a year pretty severely. It wasn’t like the flights were bad, I’m just really that scared, even though I know a good amount about aviation. I’d love to travel though! My BF has been to Europe as well. He said his favorite country he was able to visit was Switzerland. He went with a group of students, so the trip was planned by his school. They didn’t get to stay in places more than a few days and events were planned. But from what I recall it was a 16 day tour of various countries in Europe. He loved it, but wishes he could have experienced more and enjoyed some down time as it became extremely exhausting traveling to 5 or 6 countries in 16 days. He just wishes he could have had the time to enjoy it more and not be so rushed.

I'm sorry that flying is so tough for you. Have you looked into train travel or cruising? You're even closer to Canada than we are, and Canada has some beautiful train routes. I traveled all over the U.S. on Amtrak with my dad when I was younger. There are regularly scheduled transatlantic crossings on Cunard in both directions if you want to explore Europe without flying. Or you could take another cruise line when they reposition their ships (spring & fall), although those take longer. There is no need to ever fly within Europe; their train infrastructure (and buses even) is far superior to what we have in the United States. It is actually possible to travel the world without flying if you're determined to do so. There are people who have even done it on foot!
@ravenm6443Ай бұрын
@ these are all things we’ve considered if we ever get the opportunity. I have a general interest in transportation infrastructure, mainly rail transportation, so any chance I have to take a train is very exciting! I’ve never been on a ship before but have said if I were to cross the Atlantic, I’d probably go on Queen Marry 2, as she is the last of the true ocean liners. But I’m open to other ships or crossing the Pacific. I’ve never been up to Canada, though I want to. We just don’t have passports currently lol. Honestly, we rarely make it down to the cities. I’m hoping Amtrak Borealis does come up this way because maybe we would be able to go more often. Happy and safe travels ❄️🙂

@ I took EB to Chicago once. Loved it! My BF and I would like to go to Portland or even take Zephyr, which is suppose to be a beautiful route as well (really if I’m not a train I’m happy lol). But Borealis would be a day train, which is why we’d prefer it depending on the situation. EB is usually here around 2AM. When I went, it was 3hrs late due to flooding in Minot, so it didn’t get here until 5AM. But people here really want a day train! I think if I remember right, the schedule concept is for Borealis to be here at 8AM or something. There’s also talks of reopening the North Coast Hiawatha line from Montana to Chicago, which would travel through more mid state cities like Bismarck and Jamestown before coming to Fargo to go to Chicago. It sounds like they are in planning phase last I heard. I’m actually very excited for the future of rail travel here. While I still want legacy long route like EB to be high speed with more shorter routes being standard, I’m still excited that we’re getting new engines and cars. I’m also excited for Brightline. And Acela I’m not sure if the new train is in service yet or if it’s a few months out, but it looks really nice!
