The BBC/BSB Wimbledon stuff is actually quite complicated. The BBC were not sympathetic to BSB at all (indeed, the BBC had rather a _crush_ on Sky News and were desperately trying to tie with Sky to co-produce Sky News programming and taking 15% of BMTV potentially as a small foot-in-the-door) - BSB were if anything a bit of an irritant to the BBC, they were trying to force the DMAC issue by being _good little IBA servants_ - a technology the BBC wanted no part in and were not involved in having worked it out as a folly from the start. The BBC had ignored DMAC seeing at as an IBA plaything that would quite simply not work properly. The Wimbledon thing arose as the BBC were working with HNK to test the related, but rather more complicated HD-MAC service, providing some scaled HD-MAC pictures (1125 lines) to BSB to see the feasibility of refactoring HD-MAC in to 625 DMAC. The BBC were wholly invested in HD-MAC for exploration but not DMAC. The BBC were investigating other 625 line PAL improvements without re-inventing the whole blasted thing to no net gain. Sources I have spoken to who were there on the Wimbledon '89 coverage with the MAC services said the HD-MAC looked great but the BSB conversion looked atrocious and most viewers ended up switching to the PAL coverage on BBC2 as the pictures were offensively poor in some places. I think this is the only time BSB/BBC crossed paths in production, and it wasn't out of sympathy! My opinion though, and if you research the 1988-1993ish period for British Broadcasting, on the whole the BBC were far more aligned to what Sky were doing compared to BSB. Sky presented no rival at all in terms of output except for Sky News which the BBC had made overtures toward becoming involved with quietly behind the scenes and been rebuffed sternly by Sky. BSB could have been another rival for viewers, was neatly under the auspices of the IBA, was pushing the rather specious technology of DMAC and would have been far more aligned to the IBA network leaving it of no value to the BBC except nicking viewers. My opinion, but it's not a clear Sky "evil"/BSB "good" = BBC likes BSB. This really wasn't the mood of the time by my research?

Back in the 1970s/80s, despite living on the Yorkshire coast, our aerial was tuned in to Tyne Tees TV so I have so many more memories of watching these announcers and idents than Yorkshire TV. We then paid our TV rental company to add an extra aerial so that we could access Yorkshire, albeit with a rather fuzzy picture, via a switch on the window sill.

The final franchise round ended up being just a bit too much for Thames. The ITC had been stripped of its teeth, but many of the former IBA people had been around just long enough to help draft the rules for it, including the purposefully nebulous quality threshold. As such, they tried and succeeded in saving as many incumbents as possible as a middle finger to the government, and apparently didn't try to help save TV-AM (for multiple possible reasons). But ultimately Carlton had been too good at future-proofing their bid.

This may have been covered before, but why did end shots of 1980s ads always shrink to half the size to fit a logo and phone number in? Not sure why it was such a trendy thing to do instead of actually putting them over the full screen ad.

Nightmare (1974): A murder witness, who can't convince the police that the killer lives in the apartment across the courtyard from him, realizes he is the sniper's next victim. Starring Richard Crenna as Howard Falcon, Patty Duke as Jan Richards, Vic Morrow as Detective Rausch and Arlene Golonka as Linda. Yes, that is the real title, and no, Angie Dickinson is not in it.

I’m not sure VideoCrypt is a reverse engineering of Discret. They’re totally different things, and I can’t find that they shared any development path. Discret was also totally broken by this point, even French newspaper articles had been printed showing plans for a DIY decoder. Discret and VideoCrypt (Sky’s encryption) are fundamentally different techniques though. Unless there was an aborted attempt at using a Discret clone?

We also had Sue Robbie as an on-screen continuity announcer on occasions, as well as the fact that she presented the quiz show “Connections” in the late 80s and we got to go to Granada TV studios in town to watch that show being recorded when I was in the 4th year at high school! One of the most moving bits of continuity announcing was Jim Pope in 1986 doing the closedown after Pat Phoenix had died. This is available on KZbin. I also liked the music Granada used for closedowns, I think it was by Keith Mansfield of “Grandstand” fame.

BBC has always had a stranglehold on the minds of the British population. But ITV does themselves no favours in catering to the lowest common denominator. The only highlight was CITV for me during the 90s, which had genuinely better choice for kids over BBC outdated "edutainment" like Blue Peter. Now the CITV channel doesn't even exist anymore. And so the next generation grows up never watching TV and thus, TV dies.

The BBC isn't just its Drama, Comedy, Documentaries, News, Wildlife, Investigative, Political programmes. Its also its radio stations, and their varied content. The music output whether pop, jazz, electronic, orchestral or classical; everything from quiz shows to technical and space programmes. Live events, sports and national events such as state funerals, and royal events. World services both TV and radio. It would be wrong to start examining their enormous output under a microscope for flaws and then discard anything giving less than 100% perfection and making it available to private bidders or simply scrapped. That way lies the end of the BBC. As the video so pointedly states the country has let go of its public service Gas & Electricity industries, its Water Authority and much of its NHS which has hardly proved beneficial to the public by lowering their costs or improving their services. Handing our countries public services to billionaires means they then exist for the benefit of their wealthy shareholders - not the public. The BBC should be protected and kept away from government and billionaire owners control and as the video points out there are ways to achieve this. I think if humanity has found a way of putting men on the moon, safeguarding the BBC should be a doddle.
