I didn't know Hara was at the big races this early! I know he was at the 1998 "trial" run of the ISTC Worlds in '98 in England, and that he won the first "official" ISTC Worlds at Yatabe in Japan in 2000, but to see him in '96 and to know he has just as much passion today is great! Truly one of the greatest all around RC drivers in his prime EVER.

It's crazy how far we've come! These are probably 8 or 9 turn mods and on this small track I would honestly say the speed is less than even a 21.5 blinky class! 1988 was probably around the time of 1400 SCR ni-cad cells--4 cell 4.8 v. Even though our 1S lipos are only 3.7v, they don't sag at all compared to old ni-cads. Thank goodness for 2.4 ghz! Turning on your radio in the pits back in the day could literally make somebody on the drivers stand lose control and crash! We take for granted not having to cut comms and groove brushes EVERY SINGLE RUN in the mod classes! Look at Mike Reedys lathe setup, he'll spend 12-14 hours a day cutting comms, shaping brushes and aligning stators for the duration if the event.
I started racing RC cars in the fall of 1987...wow!

Awesome! The suspension sure has improved since then! :-)

not that suspension is THAT much better just that everyone races on a smooth as butter surface with jumps and not the naturally evolving race track through repeated use.

@@corrie.welsh6272 suspension harmonics have been incorporated into the design of rc suspension nowa days . so, you are incorrect in your statement. drive an old car then drive a new car and you will see the difference is huge.

@@johntuffy5721 true, but when you run on tracks as smooth as concrete it is nothing compared to the tracks of the 80's maybe not the big drops of the "Supercross" style of tracks but the varying terrain heat after on the old tracks verses the consistent surface of new racks make tuning a necessity then verses now. Tune for big jumps and the sway bars compensate for the rest of the butter smooth track.
