Did you ever publish the play through video? I’m curious about how this drum stacks up vs a Tama black brass snare… If I can save a few bucks with diy and get a good drum out of it, I’m all for it

Learning the music and playing properly for the situation are the “table stakes” of being a working pro. In the 30 years of doing this as my full-time job, exactly ZERO people have hired me for my chops / ability to solo.

I'm actually living near Monroe, NC currently as I moved here 3 yrs ago starting a new job over at Ludwig. I imagine I'll be back home at some point to help care for the aging parents. This had its moments but left me with a couple of unanswered questions, these being: - what do you mean when you say the drum folds up? - if the Ludwig Acrolite is limited in its use and, as you put it, "folds up"when hit hard, why then should everybody own at least one? Or any??
@BrianStephensOfficial
@BrianStephensOfficial Ай бұрын
In this case, what I mean is that the drum chokes if you hit it too hard (think outdoor stage / ‘Tommy Aldridge in his prime’ hard). All of the sonic characteristics that we usually dig about the Acrolite turn into a thin ‘whap’ for me when I *really* lay into that drum. So, I only use it on gigs and recordings that are more of a medium to lower volume dynamic range. But it’s not the drum’s depth that’s the problem. That 5x14 Bucks County bell brass snare you see on the middle shelf, to the right, actually sounds *better* that louder I hit it. The Acrolite was just never built to be pummeled. Why should I or anybody own one? Because, in the right situations and in the right dynamic ranges, they sound fabulous. But like I said in the video, there’s no snare drum that can do everything, all the time, in every musical situation. All that said, even at today’s prices, a used Acrolite is still an incredible value.

Great video! Yeah, I think these are incredibly versatile cymbals. I used the 20" on a jazz gig last week and it was great. I agree with you about the hats. For louder gigs, I use a Giant Beat bottom underneath the Big Beat bottom. For lower volume gigs, I use a Giant Beat top underneath the Big Beat top. Gives me everything I need in hats.

I noticed that the dirty one had a bit more attack than the clean one. I personally prefer hearing the individual hits rather than it being one long sustained sound (except when I have to do a roll). Would gaff tape shorten the sustain and also bring back the attack, or only shorten the sustain? And a question unrelated to cleaning: one of the cymbals in our band has an uneven spot at the underside, right at the edge (it's not a crack, but it feels like a bump, clothes catch on to it when I'm setting up). Do I have to start looking for a replacement, or do I not have to worry because it's most likely not going to crack?
@BrianStephensOfficial
@BrianStephensOfficial 3 ай бұрын
You hear more attack because the sustain on the dirty cymbal is muted. A little waffle of gaff tape would essentially bring that sound back on the cleaner cymbal. Not sure about that spot in your cymbal but usually that sort of thing is trouble just waiting to happen, especially if you hit pretty hard.
@mvl8209
@mvl8209 3 ай бұрын
@@BrianStephensOfficial Thanks :) I'm in a windband as AUX percussionist, so no need to hit the cymbal like a metal drummer does... Just some rolls with soft mallets (sometimes I have to go loud though), and the occasional hit (in music where I don't have time to grab the cyms à 2, because having to play another instrument right before. That's often with wooden stick, but again, not really hitting hard)

I play primarily metal and hard rock .. I prefer the old 60's 70's zild. Avid. CRASH-- actually, dirty sounds better ( in my opinion) the darker sound and quick decay works well with the style. that said.. for hats splashes and accent I do prefer clean.. the cut is brighter ... @BrianStephensOfficial
@BrianStephensOfficial 3 ай бұрын
@@jacksondernar1984 Not bad. They’re entry level cymbals and, like most, have that sonic quality that you’re talking about. (More gong than crash) Lots of people thinks it’s the B8 alloy that’s the problem, but Paiste makes some awesome sounding B8 alloy cymbals. With a little more lathing & hammering, those Sabian B8’s could sound like a much more expensive cymbal. But that said, part of a higher priced cymbal’s price tag is the amount of work that goes into making it, especially during the hammering & lathing phases.

Squiers are fine these days, especially the $300-$450 models; the "cheapening out" areas that really affect anything are usually just cheaper tuners and the electronics but swapping out pickups and pots and stuff is pretty easy and a Squier is as good a place as any to learn that. The Paranormal series from Squier has been pretty cool, too; the Paranormal Cyclone has been my favorite modding platform. My biggest issue with these Squiers has just been that the Indian laurel fretboards often come to me pretty dire-looking and splintering around the edges. I've been really wanting to get one of those J. Mascis Jazzmasters, though, they look really cool.

This particular Squire feels and sounds a whole lot more expensive than it is. If it didn’t say “Squire” on the headstock, I’d think it was a regular Fender. Having tried a couple of other options last week at a local store (that did not have this model sadly), this one feels & sounds remarkably better than anything else in its price range.
