Hey Ian! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. You chose well. They’re great cymbals! Lots more Studio Test Kitchen videos on the way! (Working on demos of an 8x14 brass snare and a pair of budget ribbon mics right now!)

I have some big beats. i love them Kind of buttery, Warm & Mellow, yet still that 2002 glassy cut, I love Paiste cymbals. They are quite versatile. Great video, thx.

Huge Paiste fan, only brand I've owned and played since '99. I've done blind tests and always picked Paiste every time but one, and that was a Meinl. Very tasteful playing! Those hit hats sounds especially great to my ears! Great video!

Thanks Dale!! I too have been a Paiste fan since around 1989, when I was in high school and bought my first Paiste crash. A few years later, while in college, I picked up some 2002 Hihats and ride cymbal which I still own to this day. Full Disclosure: I’ve been a Paiste Artist Endorser since 1997 (thanks to Rich Mangicaro) but they didn’t lend me these cymbals to test out. One of my best buddies, Shannon Kori, bought them last year and loaned them to me for a month to try out & do this filming.

@@BrianStephensOfficial now THATS a good friend! I honestly believe I'll play Paiste the rest of my life, and plan on keeping the cymbals I have now forever. Wanting to try a few others I don't own yet, but have regretted selling a couple in the past. Never again! Thanks for the response I look forward to future videos!

I'm using 2002 hats,and sig crashes,just bought the big beat 21 to go with them..always thought my 20 in sig ride was too dry,this BB sounds awesome..

Yep, I’ve got a 20” Sig from the late 90’s and it is definitely much drier than the BB. Great choices all around!

Thank you for this demo. I did really like the video on the dock as it truly depicted the actual sound that we hear much of the time. I've been looking at updating my Paiste crashes, and these were considered! Thanks!

I’m glad you dug it and hoped it helped. They make for great crashes! Put them on the top of that list of considerations!! 👍🏻👍🏻

Love all my big beats. Only one to me that didn’t fit was the 18, just was to light sounding to me. I actually owned the 18 twice and ended up selling each time. I use the 15 hats, 19, 20 and 22. They are perfect. Also, I added a 2002 sound edge bottom to my 15” top. Made a world of difference.

That swap on the hihat cymbals sound like the ticket!! (Only thing I didn’t like about the set was I wanted a heavier bottom cymbal.)

They sound as delicious as they look. Just like that snare drum. I'm pretty sure you could make trashcan lids sound good 😄 This may be a dumb question but I gotta ask what is that thing on a 45° angle at the top/front of the rack tom and towards the snare side on the floor tom 🤔
@BrianStephensOfficial
@BrianStephensOfficial 9 ай бұрын
Thanks so much! (That snare is a 5x14 Bucks County Bell Brass snare and it’s one of the sounding snares I own) I appreciate ya for watching and for those kind words. Those large objects you’re asking about are Sennheiser MD421 microphones. A studio staple for the last several decades. I usually use a smaller clip-on BeyerDynamic condenser mic on my toms when making videos (less visually obtrusive but a great sound as well). But in this case, I filmed all of these audio samples on a short break in between recording sessions for clients. So, I didn’t want to jump through the audio engineering hoops needed to swap out mics just to film these. (It was all I could do to change into a clean shirt 😉🤣😂)

Clean shirts are over rated. 😏 I don't think the things I'm questioning are mics they're silver rods maybe ¼" almost remind me of internal damper levers.
@BrianStephensOfficial
@BrianStephensOfficial 9 ай бұрын
Oh sorry! Yes! Those are the levers that engage or disengage some internal dampeners. On vintage drums like those 1967 Ludwig’s they’re called a “baseball bat” lever while on other brands, like Gretsch, you’d have a circular dial mechanism that adjusts those internal dampeners. Good eye!! 👍🏻👍🏻

Great Job. BUT You used only the biggest ones as Rides.
@BrianStephensOfficial
@BrianStephensOfficial 8 ай бұрын
Hmmmm, maybe go back and rewatch it. That 20” gets a whole lot of crashing done on it. Only place where the “ride” / tip of stick on top of the cymbal sounded appropriate was at the beginning of that one Pop track. If I’d played ride cymbal stuff, at least for most of these music samples, on the 18” or 19”, it would have been too washy. All that said, I’d consider taking the 18” and 19” cymbals on a coffeehouse gig or a very low volume jazz quartet gig. At lower volumes, they wouldn’t build up too much so as to obscure the stick attack.

How do you like the Trick Hi Hat Stand?
@BrianStephensOfficial
@BrianStephensOfficial 7 ай бұрын
I LOVE IT!! I’ll do a video about this one day but, about 6 years ago, I had a repetitive stress injury to my MCL on my left knee (inside edge). My ortho Doctor (team doc for the ATL Falcons) tried a ton of things and when he had me change to this hihat stand, my knee problem went away in about 3 months. I’ve got tons more detail about it but that’ll have to wait for the video. Long story short: Smoothest, best feeling, most responsive hihat stand on the market!
