You would still need to go in and define collisions for the mesh. While Lumberyard is no longer available, check out the Open 3D Engine, which was developed based on our learnings from developing the Lumberyard Engine. Here is a good place to start to lean about collision for meshes in O3DE: docs.o3de.org/docs/user-guide/interactivity/physics/nvidia-physx/configuring/configuration-collision-groups/

It's very rare when it comes to looking at creative directors for video games, Warren Spector is hands down one of my favorite gaming veterans ever. He and his former studio really brought new life to classic Disney characters in the modern era 😁😁😁

The Lynx is one of my favorite portable gaming units from the past, as well as the PSP. I was a HUGE supporter for the Atari system and created "The Lynx Gaming Packet" from 1991 to 99 with around 100 pages of game codes, instructions and maps for nearly all of the games. Looking at my binder next to me on my desk, it is full of wonderful Lynx goodies from a former friend I made at Atari who would share lots of cool advertising items, maps and secrets with me during those years. I have 46 game slides; 12 "Atari Adventure" full-color booklets displaying the available titles in 15 pages; 3 "Grey Matters Vol.3" booklets from 1992 mainly covering "Batman Returns", but has 30 pages on all of the Lynx games; the "Atari Explorer Jan/Feb. 1991" magazine with 20 pages on the Lynx and games; a big, folded "Ninja Gaiden" double-sided poster; two white double-pocketed Lynx folders directly from Atari that are full of advertisements, news articles, pamphlets, and store newsletters; full-color 11x17" slick photos of the system and various game ads; tons of news releases directly from Atari, and all of the original "Atari Advantage" and "A.P.E." fan newsletter releases. My booklet full of codes, instructions and maps was sold through the newsletter. My model 2 unit is still in perfectly working condition with all of the games stored in an excellent double holder carrying bag made back then that looks like something you would buy in a store, though it was sold through "Atari Adventure", along with superb Velcro closed, three-way foldable material carrying cases for the cartridges, similar to those slots in your case, but better. I have five of those with all of my games. I only collected the best of the titles, so I have 42 of them. I used to have the store table top display stand, but ditched it years ago. So yeah, I'm a big fan of the system. I was the first to create instructions on how to play the fractal generator in "Chip's Challenge" and the "Game of Life" in "Zarlor Mercenary". Same for the maps to "Electrocop" and some other game related items. I loved "Slime World" and "Warbirds" the most, but all of the titles were fun. I have all of the game boxes as well, in mint condition, with manuals. For those with a working Lynx and love the games, there are three things worth investing in for the gaming on the Lynx. First, I highly recommend upgrading your screen to the "BennVenn IPS LCD Mod Kit" that is a synch to install without soldering from K-Retro.com. Second item from them is "9V USB Power Adapter Cable", which will allow you to power the unit from a portable USB connection battery. Lastly, get yourself an "ElCheapoSD - Lynx Rev2" card from BennVenn.com. Then you can have every officially released game, as well as all of the best homebrew titles on one card. If you do get one, contact me and I'll share them all and the upgraded menu via a .rar linked from Google Drive. You just delete the contents of the card and replace everything with the .rar files, and you are set to game.

Thanks so much for sharing such awesome Lynx memories! Chris used to moderate the Atari forums for Aol back in the mid 90's and had a bunch of materials from Atari around the launch of the Jaguar. Such an awesome time in the industry! Also, Chip's Challenge, Electrocop, and Warbirds were among his favorite games as well!

Wonderful interview. David is very down to earth and humble. I had no idea he had worked on Terminator and Aladdin as well before forming Shiny. It's so refreshing to hear from dev studio leaders with a genuine interest in gaming, instead of leaders of big publishers who can only talk about the business side of things. Thanks Chris, for making this an easy, free-flowing 70 minute watch.

The idea that "sending someone a text with a link to a playable game" is going to fix the discovery problem is patently absurd. If someone sends me a text today about an amazing game, I'm not going to ignore it because buying it on steam is JUST TOO CUMBERSOME. It's so disappointing to see these people who were amazing creative innovators get sucked into this absolute web3/html5 nonsense vaporware. How about AGS focus on figuring out how an MMO can launch without server issues. Maybe get that ONE thing right before you go off and "reinvent the web" or whatever nonsensical word salad gets your VC investors hard.

Raph isnt an amazon employee. They are simply partnered with Amazon to use their server centers. Just like I can buy/rent servers from AWS and then run AI inferences.... On that note, what if you could log into the game multiple ways? Steam download for those who like using steam. HTML link for those who never use steam (my parents as example). Guild Wars 2 and Elder Scrolls Online weren't always on Steam and had players using their launchers. Having to be on steam isnt a necessity its just "extra attention". For me, GW2 on steam is useless because you cant link your old GW2 account and your steam account. Ruining it all. So I have to use the private launcher always. While I agree forcing everyone to login via web would be lame, what if its just another option?

@@goblinphreak2132 Ralph isn't, but Chris (whom I was quoting) is an Amazon employee. Regarding web login, it's just so incredibly low on the priority list of things that people who play MMOs that it's insulting to have it part of the conversation. Talk about how you're going to fix having days long queue times on launch. Talk about how you're going to fix botting. Talk about how you're going to fix RMTing. There is no "discovery problem" when you make a good game. BG3 didn't have a discovery problem. They should stop trying to solve problems that aren't problems. We're on a boat in the ocean that's full of holes and they're talking about how to turn the boat into a drill so we can reach the center of the earth. Sure, that'd be cool I guess? But maybe while you're here can you help plug these holes?

@@whatwouldericdo well, with AWS server clusters and "cloud gaming" logging in wouldn't be an issue because you wont have "one login server" because every pc in the cluster/cloud would allow you to do that job. so it would essentially load balance the login process. where as modern mmo's from what ive seen being in many many alpha's and beta's, they generally have ONE PC for log-in/authentication and you get handed off to the actual server pc after the login process which as you pointed out, counter intuitive. its possible cloud based gaming will solve that simply from the game being in the cloud and having seemingly unlimited physical hardware backing it up. especially since AWS claims they will "spin up as many servers as needed on the fly to meet demand" so there is that. of course, i would agree, the developer has to actually plan ahead for that. to make use of the cloud properly.

Tom Kalinske is truly a industry legend in toys and video games! He was indeed a generational tallent who earned the fame from fans and industry companies. The only miss was not on him, but how Sega could not keep the OG Mega Drive name in the US to Genesis - unlike the rest of the world who had the real name.

*He does **_not_** have Hyperthymesia.* There’s _plenty_ of evidence against that claim. He’s got a good memory, but Hyperthymesia is _far_ more pronounced than a good memory & I think it’s off-putting that he’s claiming to have a condition that’s only been diagnosed to ~60 people in the world. It’s just a way he can attempt appeals to authority fallacies.
