I work in the trades but have always had an interest in psychology and helping people. Do you think it's possible to transition to an HR career? I am looking at community college certificate programs in Canada. Would that be enough to get an entry level position?
@annefloreskepu2 ай бұрын
@@Shannon_Robbie that’s great! Coming with existing work experience is always beneficial. A certificate is a solid starting point, but it depends on the employer and their entry criteria. Hi Anne, I recently came across your content and really enjoyed it! You're doing an amazing job. I was wondering if you could help me with some guidance as I’m preparing for HR roles in Australia, I’ll be moving there in the coming months or by early 2025. I have experience in recruitment and HR operations, and I’m curious to know if any certifications or short-term courses are necessary to boost my chances of securing a job in the HR field. Also, do you know of any companies currently offering remote opportunities in this area? I’d greatly appreciate any advice or recommendations you can share. Thanks so much in advance, and have a great weekend ahead!
@annefloreskepu4 ай бұрын
@@Acbdfeds heya! Thanks for stopping by. Most Australian businesses will look to your working experience over qualifications. The fundamentals of HR are relatively unchanged across markets from what I’ve observed. That being said, if you do want to upskill, I recommend having your existing qualifications assessed to see if they’re comparable to Australian studies. That way you don’t have to invest in studying all over again! There are a few services that offer a free assessment. As for remote - when I find one I’ll be applying myself haha! I don’t see many of these opportunities pop up. All the best!

Hi Anne thanks for sharing your journey with us HR professionals. I wanted to ask if there was ever a time you worked for an employer whether part time/ full time as well as practising HR consulting as a side hustle ? What would your advice be on those looking at heading down that route in their HR career?
@annefloreskepu6 ай бұрын
@@keekzsm320 I have for a short period of time, and I would not advise it! Working in HR you aren’t able to just switch between employer/ client easily, because the work you’re doing can at times be all consuming. Managing the expectations of your client/s while also managing a full time HRBP/HRM job is a quick path to burn out. Practical sense - you could be working on launching an engagement survey as well as driving annual performance reviews, and then your client is phoning you in hysterics for a redundancy process they botched up. It can be overwhelming. However - if you only stick to email advice with clear SLA’s (service time frames) it’s far more manageable, but that might not be as appealing for some businesses to work with you. It could definitely work - I just don’t recommend it if you’re in a high responsibility role with an employer and working with complex cases for clients at the same time.
@keekzsm3206 ай бұрын
@@annefloreskepu thank you for your response, this is great information to know and have as up and coming g HR professionals. Is there a specific exam or a certain level of qualification that one has to ascertain in order to be able to practice as an HR consultant ? Would you be able to give your thoughts on the best pathway to this for when we do finally work up the courage to venture out on our own as consultants ? If you have or ever run any masterclasses on HR related topics I would pay money to learn from you. So thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge with us in this platform which comes at no cost. Shows your level of expertise and heart for people, much appreciated.

Thanks for ur great video 🎉 a really tough experience at your company. I know assist hr practitioners and my manager. As hr admin. To summarize: - my HR Practitioner role was discontinued, but you were promoted to Senior HR Practitioner without requesting it. Since company had retrenchments - was put on a 6-month trial without a salary increase, despite taking on triple the workload. - After 6 months, I was demoted to HR Administrator with a 60% salary cut due to perceived poor performance. - - You're still expected to handle a 70% heavy workload, similar to previous HR Practitioner role. - felt bullying and rude from boss - I applied for other jobs within the company, but haven't been successful. Remember, I deserve to work in a healthy and supportive workplace hence I'm thinking of quitting.

HR sucks. Completely useless department that does more harm than good. It needs to be abolished, and the regular bland, SMALL personnel department of the past, needs to come back. The most HR should do, is shuffle paperwork like I-9 forms and insurance benefits, and stay out of the way of the people doing real jobs. Half of the nitwits in this department have no idea what the managers are actually hiring for, and they actually make hiring LESS efficient (I’ve had their incompetent slack cripple projects of mine because they were filtering out quality candidates before we could even talk to them, thereby slowing the overall process, and setting our project timeline back). FAR too many of them think they’re psychologists, and they’re… NOT. Many of them do idiotic trash like conducting long debunked personality testing, or trying to enforce speech codes that are moronic and go well beyond the utter basics of just not being a racist or sexist twat at work. Ironically, HR is not a “resource” for employees at all. It’s a defense mechanism of a weak company. No one with a real problem with another employee should EVER go to HR or “People Experience” or whatever other lame euphemism they’ve come up with. HR are there to protect the weak company from lawsuits, and HR are often the least adult people in the room. They're more like “Mean Girls” turned into a department, hell bent on making workers lives miserable. When I find out someone works in HR, that’s the person I never talk to unless forced to. They’re a PLAGUE upon modern business, especially to people who just want to come to work, do their job, and get on with real life. HR absolutely DETESTS the mission-focused worker who doesn’t want any part of their nonsensical drama. Cut this department, and hire actual workers at decent salaries. You’ll save SO MUCH MONEY as a business.

Heya! Your study pathway is quite different to the skill set required for HR. Do you have working experience in the HR space? I recommend completing a few elective courses/units in HR to see if you like it, before making any decisions. Recommendations would be to align your studies to the career you’re after, especially if it requires specific skills. If you have access to a careers counsellor or any HR professionals on campus, it’s worth reaching out to them to share their experience/views. Good luck!

This is really dependent on your skill level and ability to influence change. At $150k you’re looking at a mid-senior HR Manager with people management responsibilities. If you’re not already leading a team, I recommend looking for opportunities to do this, and brushing up on your business acumen.
