Being from Tampa I knew all of the Outlaws, went to high school with Billy , lived in the same neighborhood as Henry. Used to watch them playing the bars in Tampa, specifically the Depot on Nebraska Ave. Through all the years Hughie was the one constant until he left to play with Skynard.

I have a question? Was Billy Jones related to Stan Jones who wrote Ghost Riders in the sky? Like maybe Billy's uncle ? Im curious.

I remember the Outlaws big time from my youth. I listened to everybody my family did Charlie Daniels band, Marshal Tucker band and lots of Southern Rock. Of course the Allman Brothers band. I was born in 60 and grew up in Sarasota. Those werethe greatest of time's! Thank you for the Rememberance!

3:45 The sound of his guitar is so bad and just plain gross. It has nothing to do with Billy Jones. As he never sounded that bad. Please..., just stop it!!!

They were absolutely brilliant to snag Paul Rothchild to produce their eponymous album The Outlaws. Absolutely set their sound and approach into motion. 🙏🏼

Hughie was the complete badass! That dude would punish a Strat. I think he’s just playing that Strat in heaven. I love him & Toy, and they’re the reason I picked up a guitar 🎸 when I was younger and I’m 62 now.

Growing up in the 70s remembering all the bands from late 60s to late 70s. I don't know what it was but Billy was my favorite guitarist. Saw him play a few times, always wished I could have met him and say thank you... life on the road is very tough job.

Love your video of the boys. I gave Ethan his first guitar lesson at age 5. Lol He hated the guitar and it didn't like him either the best I could tell. I had to pay him to learn the G chord! Cost ME $3.00 & 2 pieces of peppermint candy. He was tough. His parents Carla and Ernie did a great job. I really hope you will decide to post more videos or "content" as they call IT. Green Grass and High Tides FOREVER!

My favorite southern rock bands are Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Outlaws, .38 Special, Molly Hatchet, The Marshall Tucker Band and etc. I think that most strongest and powerful members of The Outlaws were Billy Jones, Hughie Thomasson, Freddie Salem, Monte Yoho, Harvey Dalton Arnold, David Dix during the late 70's. Especially the live album "Bring It Back Alive" were the best album of them. Billy Jones has a classy clean vocal on songs like "Holiday" and "Freedom Walk", but the sound were very strong and powerful.

I met Hughie at 86 Street in 1986 at Expo 86 in Vancouver. The Outlaws just opened for Delbert McClinton. Hughie and I hung for about a half hour and I bought him a beer. He said to me Henry would only show up when the spotlight could be on him. Very sad about Mary. Lots of love to her and RIP HT Jr.

Great to hear stories from someone who knew both Billy and Hughie.... and love hearing those lead parts again. And learning how Billy set those pickups, which I did not know. Billy always was little too much of a free form lead player for my taste, never worrying much about how it sounded on the album. He often just did his thing in live performaces. But his heavy bend and vibrato approach was a perfect counterpoint to Hughie's blazing fast Strat leads.

I was at Pepe's A'GoGo the night the Nitty Gritties came in. Duane invited me to dinner at the Chase Hotel where I listened to Bill McEuen tell him and Gregg that he'd get them a record deal with Liberty Records if they came to LA. After their engagement at Pepe's they headed west. In his book Gregg said "We just wanted to get out of St. Louis."

Jones was a math guy - he probably knew / understood more about the logic of sound than 99% of rock guitarists and that percentage might be low. His ending his own life is one of rock music's great tragedies; a real shame for sure. RIP Billy Jones.
