Hey @TheWorldOfBudgetVinylRecords! 🐬🎶 Thanks so much for the kind words and for sharing the video with your subscribers! I'm thrilled to hear that these flexi-discs were new to you-it's always exciting to uncover and share those hidden gems from the past. Your channel is such a treasure trove of vinyl goodness, and it means a lot that you enjoyed this dive into the world of Wheaties and Mickey Mouse Club records. I actually got these from a lot I purchased, and while some were in decent shape, others weren’t so lucky. There were a few sports-themed ones, but unfortunately, they were completely unplayable and are now lost to time. Even the ones I shared in the video posed some serious challenges during recording. The “Happy Mouse” disc fell apart after just one take, and both the Donald Duck and Whistle ones needed major editing to create a seamless recording because they were skipping so badly. Seeing how easily these records can deteriorate really highlights the importance of what we do-to ensure these recordings live on, even if their physical form doesn’t. Let’s keep the vinyl love going strong and preserve these musical treasures together! 🎧✨

@@FinnleysAudioAdventures I can't help but wonder if 78 RPM was the wrong choice for those at the time, despite being such a small diameter, and contributed to their short lifespan. I remember some of the thin vinyl sheets we'd get in newspaper promotions, inside books (they'd be stapled into the magazine or book binding and you'd tear them out). Those all played at 33 RPM. One that stands out in particular is one of the McDonalds promotional records in the 1980s where if the group singing the jingle made it all the way through, you'd win a grand prize. Ours, sadly, was like most and they'd stumble toward the end, with a disappointed-sounding announcer voiceover saying "aww, we're sorry, but better luck next time!". Those were mostly throw-away, but surely would have lasted longer than 1-2 plays despite.

Hey @RickJohnson! 🐬🎶 I’m right there with you-these flexi-discs are definitely delicate survivors! Given the age and the simple, fragile technology behind them, it’s amazing any of them are still playable at all. Some are made better than others, though. For example, in my video "Honeycomb - The Haunted House," I featured another Cardboard Flexi Record where the grooves were stamped onto lacquer-coated cardboard, and it’s held up surprisingly well. Then there are the Eva-Tone Sound Sheets from "Final Boarding Call: The Story Behind 'Say Hello to Pan Am'" and "United Air Lines Presents the Inside Story of Flight 120," which have fared better over time-but those were made by a different company, not Rainbo Records like the Wheaties ones. That said, it doesn’t mean these are inferior. After all, I have some vinyl records that haven’t stood the test of time either, with audio so muddy it’s almost undiscernable. It’s all part of the adventure in preserving these pieces of history! Thanks for watching and appreciating the journey! 🎧✨

Hey @RickJohnson! I'm so glad to hear that "Spaced Out" is your favorite! 🎶 Enoch Light's work truly shines on this album, and it's fantastic that you're enjoying the quadraphonic stereo on your Pro-Logic setup. The immersive soundscape he created is something special, and it's awesome that today's technology allows us to experience it in all its glory. Quadraphonic sound really does bring out the intricate layers and details of each track, making it feel like the music is all around you. It's a retro-futuristic experience that still impresses today. It's worth noting that during the heyday of quadraphonic records, there were two competing standards: the EV (Electro-Voice) and QS (Regular Matrix) systems. While not many EV records were produced before the QS system became the standard, it would be interesting to see if similar results could be achieved by playing an EV record on modern equipment. The differences in encoding could lead to some unique listening experiences, much like what we get from QS recordings. Thanks for tuning in and sharing your thoughts-it's always great to hear from fellow audio enthusiasts who appreciate these unique and influential albums. Stay tuned for more auditory adventures, and keep enjoying the music! 🐬 Keep the vibes alive, Finnley the Dolphin

Hi @mrs.g.9816! That's so wonderful to hear! I'm thrilled that this record brings back such fond memories for you. It's amazing how music can transport us back in time. Back in the day, records like "Hawaiian Holiday" were a staple in many households. This was largely due to advancements in aviation technology, which made air travel easier, safer, and faster. Before deregulation, airlines had to compete more on service since they couldn't compete on price. Tropical destinations became romanticized and popular travel spots. Budget record labels like Wyncote produced albums like this one, and airlines even made albums as gifts. One example on my channel is "From Airlines to Soundscapes: The Wonderful World of Aloha," which was created for Aloha Airlines. Thank you for sharing your story, and I'm glad I could help you rediscover this gem. Enjoy the tropical vibes! Warmest aloha, Finnley the Dolphin 🌴🎶

@MsMiguel70 🐬💿 Hi there! You're absolutely right; the melodic lines in this collaboration could very well serve as a music bed for voice-overs or as part of the ambiance during boarding, enhancing the overall passenger experience with Eastern Airlines. 🎶✈️ Much like the "Chevrolet 5 1/2 Minute T.V. Commercial" on our channel, which features a jazz-style music track that seamlessly integrates the vocals about Chevrolet car models, this record might have had a similar multi-purpose use. Additionally, the "1970 Disney on Parade radio commercials" test pressing video we explored, with its blend of pre-recorded announcements and music beds for local station voice-overs, shows how versatile these audio pieces can be in marketing. While the exact usage of Astrud Gilberto's collaboration with Eastern Airlines might not be crystal clear, its presence is a testament to the innovative ways airlines sought to make travel more engaging and memorable. Thanks for bringing this up-these kinds of discussions deepen our appreciation of how audio has historically played a pivotal role in both advertising and the overall consumer experience. 🌟📻

🌊🎶 Ah, @dixieboy5688, “Let’s Help Mommy” certainly seems like a charming record at first glance. However, it’s part of a fascinating yet complex chapter in audio history. Initially, it was produced by the Children’s Record Guild, an offshoot of Young People’s Records, dedicated to creating educational content for children post-WWII. But here’s where it gets deeper-during the McCarthy era, they faced allegations of promoting subversive, communist influences. This was a time when any material with progressive themes could attract scrutiny, and unfortunately, the guild wasn’t spared. They were even investigated by the House Un-American Activities Committee. While their intention was to educate, the political climate of the time cast a long shadow over their efforts, affecting their operations and leaving a bittersweet legacy in children’s media. It’s a reminder of how even the most innocent projects can become entangled in larger societal issues. 🎶📚

Albums like these, especially from airlines, capture a unique moment in history that we’ll never see again. They emerged during a time when the Civil Aeronautics Board regulated every fare, preventing airlines from competing on price. Instead, they competed on service-offering full meal services, attentive staff, and promotional items like these enchanting records to attract customers. Hi @dadabetic, Thank you for your comment! I'm glad you found it humorous. When this record was produced, cultural norms and perspectives were quite different from what we understand and appreciate today. The term "golden people" was likely a poetic or romanticized description used by the creators of the record to convey an idyllic image of Hawaii. Back then, it wasn't common for people to consider the implications of such terms from the viewpoint of the local population. Today, we have a deeper appreciation for the rich and diverse cultural identity of the Hawaiian people and strive to respect and accurately represent their heritage. While certain stereotypes and descriptors were commonplace during that period, they are not as favorable today and are best left in the past. This record, despite containing outdated and potentially offensive terms, is presented for its musical, historical, and archival purposes. Keep swimming and keep those tunes spinning, Finnley the Dolphin 🌊🐬

PS - Upon reflection, I think that the tracks "Blue Hawaii" and "Kings Serenade" do definitely include Jules Ah See on steel guitar, probably other tracks too, but my own guess is not all of them! I'm now thinking that certain tracks were recorded before Jules' untimely death in 1960, others perhaps just afterwards? Sorry for the confusion - there's so much guesswork involved in identification of personnel, that we can only assess by their styles of playing and singing!

@@FinnleysAudioAdventures I read the comments about husbands supposedly being revealed to have taken other women with them using this UAL promotional offer. It's plausible, and it could have happened, but if so I'm sure there were far fewer such incidents than people might have claimed. And all this depends on whether United actually did follow up with phone calls or mailings to the people who traveled this way. Considering that this was and is a major national airline, trying to track travelers who used the special offer might have been too time-consuming to actually follow up on a national scale. I suspect the latter.

As I'm listening, these are starting to sound familiar..this dates from a time when radio stations constantly ran singing commercials like these, which also appeared as the soundtracks for TV ads as well. LPs like this were sent out to radio stations and usually each jingle came in different versions of different lengths, depending on how much a client paid for air time.
@FinnleysAudioAdventures
@FinnleysAudioAdventures 3 ай бұрын
I don’t believe this one was meant for radio stations. From what I found it was given to Pan Am employees or travel agents when they launched the campaign. There are others on my channel which were used by radio stations. The very first one for Pacific Northwest Bell has stop grooves in between each cut to make it easier to queue for air play. But it made it hard to record.
@hebneh
@hebneh 3 ай бұрын
@@FinnleysAudioAdventures I had LPs that were actual commercials for radio stations - just the musical beds that could be used with locally-recorded voiceovers - as well as at least one demonstration record with sample commercials that a particular company could produce. So these used the jingles that the company made, but with voiceovers for fictional companies or products.

@@hebneh That's very cool. I have a test pressing up for Disney on Parade that has the narration then the bed for each station this would have been sent to for them to do their own OTA announcement.

What a lovely description you made of "Hawaii Calls", its associated vocalists and the steel player Jules Ah See, one of my favorite players of all time. Did you know that Jules died just before his 36th birthday in 1960? As far as I can tell, though I'm not certain, the steel guitarist[s] on this album does not include Jules. I've always considered that a previous album, titled "Hawaii Calls Waikiki", has Jules playing and Haunani's singing at their very best!

Very nice album - lovely clear reproduction, and I've never heard it before! There seems to be two separate combos which play alternate tracks to each other, one of which I can identify [by their sound/style] as The Surfmen, a group of musicians who made a few other albums around the early 1960s. Unfortunately, I have no idea of the identity of either of the two steel guitar players. Are there any details of personnel on the back of the sleeve by any chance?
@FinnleysAudioAdventures
@FinnleysAudioAdventures 3 ай бұрын
I’m happy to hear how much you enjoyed it. This is part of a series on budget records. This one came from Wyncote, part of Cameo Parkway. Unfortunately the sleeve was focused more on the recording process rather than the musician. Also it was typical to use studio or session musicians and vocalist to record these type of records [see Yuletide Disco]. I did a more comprehensive write-up at finnley.audio/2024/03/23/tropical-tunes-and-technological-turns-the-story-of-hawaiian-holiday/

@stanthesteelguitarman8228 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the link. As you say, both groups were most likely session/studio musicians and we will never know the identity of personnel - so often the case with Hawaiian related albums. Especially infuriating when you are a steel guitar player yourself, as I am!@@FinnleysAudioAdventures

That is one thing I miss about living on Oahu is going through the thrift stores and finding all the records. My spouse worked at a resort hotel on the west side and would book local talent to play there. We ended up with the CDs they produced. I wish it was possible to find more production information on some of the records I feature. The Pan Am record is another example of one where it would be great to list the talent behind the songs. Aside from the obvious two at the end.
