The Royal DeLuxe model with this textured finish was produced during the latter half of the 1930's. A real beauty. Congrats!

Nice video, I also have a Remington noiseless model 7. If this helps you, there’s a website that has serial number on the back the one you’re talking about at 2:20. Since yours starts with “H82” it’s from a year 1946. I hope that helps!

You can check the year of it by googling serial number. There are websites that know the year of a typewriter by having a list of serial numbers if that makes sense.

Look for a Remington compatible one, not a universal ribbon. You can also reink the ribbon on your current spool. I've found pigment ink is best rather than watercolour ink. Stamp pad reinkers are good for this and bottles can be purchased from craft supply stores. There are YT vids on how to do this.

Magic margins on my 1952 were slow/sticky. There was a bit of sticky residue (old lube) on the racks. Cleaned with lacquer thinner & blew out a couple of times then Nutrol to clean and very lightly lube. Now they work well. There’s also a rack underneath operated by the button that gets gummy and sticky so had to clean that as best I can.

Just got a 1952 exactly like that. Listed for 100. After weeks lowered to 50. Waited a week. Offered 30. Seller countered at 35 which I agreed to. Haven’t tested it fully yet, looks very clean. The lever that releases the ratchet is the line finder, it doesn’t change the ratchet setting. The button on the left knob is the variable spacer, it does change the ratchet setting.

That looks like a 1940s 4 series “speedline.” I see no paper bail. There’s a Sterling just like that near me except it does have the paper bail. Smith Corona seems to have changed things along the way to differentiate models. Round keys…pre 1949. I have a Tower almost exactly like it except straight return arm and green plastic keys (sold by Sears in 1956). My lid doesn’t stay up like that, maybe something got bent.

I thought came to mind when watching this. I'll set the scene. You go to military school, they act like a college yada yada. When you are called on, you stand and answer as if your Sargent has just called on you. Your laptop has busted but you need to take notes, you so happen to type on a Remmington Noiseless Typewriter. You take it to call and begin typing and taking notes. The teacher gets fed up with the noise after a minuet or two. (Random name chosen) "LOCWOOD! WHAT IS ALL THAT NOISE YOU'RE MAKING!?" You stand at attention and reply "SIR! I AM USING A REMINGTON NOISELESS TO TAKE NOTES! SIR!" The teacher squints at you before huffing, it's definitely quieter than most typewriters. He seems to huff before speaking to the student again. "WHY ARE YOU USING A TYPEWRITER, LOCWOOD!?" The urge to smile creeps upon your lips, but you resist. "SIR! MY LAPTOP IS BUSTED! SIR!" "I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW REMINGTON MADE TYPEWRITERS!" A small smile finally makes its ways onto your lips, you'll be doing pushups later for it. "THEY MADE THEM DURING WORLD WAR TWO, I WOULD NEVER USE ANYTHING BUT MILITARY EQUIPMENT. SIR!" The teacher stares at you for a few monets before replying "CARRY ON LOCWOOD! I WANT TO SEE YOUR NOTES AFTER CLASS!" "SIR YES SIR!"

Mom used one for a decade and a half. She graduated to a used Selectric and then an Apple II. This went unused and was offered at a recent estate sale but went unsold. I grabbed it, bought a new ribbon in it. Aside for two slightly sticky keys and that the column key jumps an extra space in some positions, it's doing pretty good. Haven't got used to the 'cents' symbol where the apostrophe should be.

I'm looking for an Olympia ultra-portable but don't know much about models etc. I already have a Traveller Deluxe S that I've had from new but I'm looking for something even more portable that would be a good workhorse. I love how Olympias type. This machine you have looks great. I'm assuming it is much lighter than a portable (I've never used ultras).

That is such a beauty! I'm old enough to remember them in the sixties, and this has the more attractive keys rather than the flatter, uglier ones. I just always think of this as the 'Bob Dylan' machine.
@Selectrolux

That machine is a beauty! I'll bet that the reason that old ribbon still prints is because it's made of cotton fabric instead of synthetic nylon material. I have the same typewriter myself and about a year ago I purchased a cotton fabric ribbon for it. The guy at the typewriter repair shop told me that the cheaper nylon ribbons only became popular after the advent of electric typewriters and impact [dot matrix] printers. Nylon material isn't porous and doesn't absorb ink like cotton fabric does; therefore, cotton ribbons retain more ink, last much longer, and require less of a striking force to make impressions in a manual typewriter. The wicking nature of the cotton also helps the spooled part of the ribbon to sort of re-ink itself.

I'm considering hunting one down. When my sister and I were little kids, we would play with the busted one that used to belong to our great great grandparents. I don't know if it was this exact model, but it was a 1930s Remington portable typewriter.

I know it became the vogue in the fifties and sixties to have a rainbow of typewriter colors. However, I've always liked gray and black machines because as someone who has typed for several hours at a stretch, a black crinkle like this is indeed easier on the eyes.

I always liked the feel of the machine but the cheap, skinny little keys meant I was constantly trapping a finger or two between the rows at high speed (over 80wpm).

This is my typewriter, but mine is labeled 'Underwood Noiseless'! Mesa Typewriter restored it for me a decade ago. Little tip for you, that I learned in typing class in school: rather than inserting one sheet of paper to type on, insert two. You'd be amazed how it can lengthen the life of your platen. Only when I use a thick, heavy paper like cotton 24# that I use for personal letters, will I only use one sheet. My sixties typewriter teachers were smart!

I always wanted one of these; not to type on (I have a 1932 Underwood Noiseless Portable that's small), but just to admire its design. Never pursued buying one because I think these little jewels need to have owners who'll actually type on them.

I own a couple of restored Depression-era portables using the direct tab system. Unlike office machines, most people aren't constantly setting and clear tab stops on these, and the direct system is not only simpler, but easier to use for the less-experienced typists. This is one beautiful machine!

I own an SF like this in beige. Fantastic little machine, I find it much easier to type on than my Rocket or Baby. While certainly not for high speed or extended work, like the Minox 'spy' cameras of my youth, better to have this machine on the spot rather than no machine. Best wishes from the Houston area.

Though I've got a half century of preference for Smith-Corona portables, I'm old enough to remember when this came out and I thought it was so beautiful. Still do. They screwed it up with Custom II and III by putting cheaper, thinner keys on it which makes it much easier to hit between the rows. I've typed well over 100wpm since my teens in the 70's, so office grade manuals and electrics are my thing, but I do love the S-C electrics. However, I have several of these in case a hurricane once again knocks out my electricity. Thanks for sharing!

Dude. You have GOT to stop typing on the platen. Put a sheet of paper in there, for the love of god. The machines you rightfully honor in your videos are poorly served by your stewardship if the next owner finds “lllLLLhhhHHH” or whatever you type imprinted in the (now) cracked platen. I am glad you finally put in a sheet but for real, after you rawdog smacked the 80? Year-old platen. Also thanks for the videos on these great machines. Honor them!!

Yeah, after the damage to the platen (#My fault) the only person interested in it was a guy who was going to tear it apart and use the pieces for some sort of art project. I guess it was a guy from high school or something. Whatever the case I will take better care of them next time for sure. I guess it was better than going into the trash...not much better in my opinion though:( He did say that he would try to send a picture after he finishes his project so once I get that I'll try to post it here somehow. Who knows... maybe it'll be cool...i doubt it though
