That part you thought wasn't very good is my absolute favorite part of the song. And you're right, even though I have heard this song 10,000 times, when I hear those 3 intro chords, I'm already fired up to hear the rest of the song! That's how you know you have an all-time classic. You just cannot get tired of it!

This is amazing! I have no musical talent so I could watch Mike Campbell play guitar forever.

Mike, in the Heartbreakers, wasn't a showman, he was all musician. Not to say he didn't step into the spotlight every now and then and show his stuff to the crowds. I'd like to say he was the musical backbone of the band, but they were/are all consummate musical pros. Miss ya Tom.

Wait, does he have a place where he regularly uploads? This channel is the last place I would think to find a video like this,

One of my all time favorite songs to play on guitar. It’s all about how all the parts fit together.

Awesome story and awesome song. The music seems to beget nostalgia which Don also captured in the lyrics. Great work by both of you. I’ve permanently lost tracks when I accidentally cleared my looper pedal - sometimes you just can’t get back that original take you loved so much so it’s crazy to think that this was almost lost multiple times and kinda makes you wonder how many great songs we’ve lost. This and Night Moves by Bob Seger are the ultimate nostalgia songs imo.

I like how he’s got those bars over his windows. That’s smart. I did alarm system work for more than 30 years and I can tell you that’s a way more effect way to keep people out. Usually all an alarm does is let you know your stuff got stolen a little quicker than you would’ve known otherwise.

So this song, American Girl, was recorded on the 4th of July, in 1976!? The bicentennial??? It was already an iconic song but this detail makes it almost... I can't think of the right word. Some kind of destiny?

Mike is the best guitarist out there. Prove me wrong. Also, i'm not sure when Mike approached tom about this song, but we know that Don Henley and Mike officially released this in 1984. Long After Dark was released 1982 and Southern Accents was released in 1985. I think it could have easily been placed on either one of The Heartbreakers' albums.
