Wow! All of these e artists did a great job!! And they were brave to put their work out there! Anna I did wonder on the last painting if it would help to make his chin just a little rounder? Just a thought, but still a wonderful painting!!

Thanks. I am a retired art teacher, now having my studio on my sister's 100-acre farm. Kawartha Family Farm. We planted about 50 peonies five years ago, and now we have over a thousand in extensive gardens. They're beautiful when in full bloom. Our perennial gardens now contain over 20,000 flowers. ( open to the public) , Like art, they are stunning but come with a lot of work and mental play. I plan on doing peony paintings when they are in bloom. To prepare, I will practice using your videos. Thanks . ( ps i did a post earlier, but i don't think it went through, so i reposted)

Thanks! I am a retired art teacher, now having a studio on my sister's farm: Kawartha Family Farms. We have over 20,000 perennials in multiple gardens (open to the public). Our first plants were peonies; now we have over 1000, with many different colours. At the end of fall, I weeded, heavily mulched it, and added more to the extensive peony gardens. Looking forward to painting them in bloom. They are stunning when all are in bloom, like a Monet garden. I will practice this winter using your videos. Thanks.

Hi Anna Rose!! I was home with a respiratory cold for two weeks this month and binge watched so many of your KZbin videos, which has given me much encouragement and confidence in my oil painting journey. Regarding your 3 part series on painting surfaces on a budget has been very informative. Please pardon my confusion, but could you please spell out the difference for me between the terms used in these processes - sealing, sizing, priming, and curing? Still kind of a mystery to me. I want to use MDF panels ultimately, but until I improve I want to use canvas boards to practice on. But I want a beautiful surface! Thank you Anna!! So grateful you are making this information so accessible!
@AnnaRoseBainАй бұрын
Hi Kathleen, I'm so honored that you chose to spend your valuable time watching my channel, and so glad you found it encouraging and helpful! To answer your question: Sealing: this refers to the process of preparing a wooden panel for receiving paint. Sizing: the process used to prepare linen for or canvas for painting. Both "sealing" and "sizing" serve similar purposes in that they are protecting your substrate from the oils in your paints, which, if applied directly to panel or canvas would eventually cause the substrate to rot. Sealing and sizing create a safe boundary between the surface and the paint and also help enable a stronger bond between the surface and the paint. Priming is similar to sealing but refers to both panels and non-rigid surfaces like stretched canvases. Priming comes AFTER sealing and/or sizing. If you are priming with acrylic gesso or acrylic polymer, this serves as the sealant as well and therefore saves you an additional step. But, as I mention in the videos, I prefer the feel of a surface that's been properly sealed (or sized) and oil primed rather than gessoed. Hope this helps! Happy painting and I hope you are feeling better! - Anna

Can you elaborate on putting down the color in an order that makes sense ( around the 12:40 mark) ? How does one know the right order to lay down the colors?
@AnnaRoseBainАй бұрын
Hi there, absolutely! The order I put down the colors from start to finish was very deliberate. There are times when you may want to start with a toned canvas or with your darks, but I started with my lightest lights because I wanted to keep the color really clean and uninfected by any of the darks. So in cases like this, where you have a bright light (whitecaps on waves might be another example), it's actually beneficial to start with your lights and then work your darks up to them.
