Better to have a red ball, yellow ball and a flashing yellow ball rather than those arrows. There is also a flashing yellow ball left turn signal in Seattle that has no biometal arrow.

It’s not based on a particular intersection for some reason. I have been to that intersection before, but there is something about why flashing yellow arrows sometimes drivers to yield to pedestrians while it’s mostly for oncoming traffic.
@Legoboyz216 ай бұрын
They're strangely turning left on a red light with a flashing yellow arrow in an intersection onto a two-way street. In the majority of the states, you can only turn left on a red light if both intersecting streets are one-way. In only five other states (Washington is one of them) you may turn left on a red light from a one-way and two-way street onto a one-way street.
@JakeRoot6 ай бұрын
The flashing yellow arrow would override the red orb, so it’s not a true “left turn on red”. In this case the red orb applies to everyone without the flashing yellow arrow (straight through and right turning traffic).

Why not flashing red right arrow?
@Farahcarrera Жыл бұрын
well, since the lane on their left is green and the pedestrians having the right of way, it's best that they should yield to the pedestrians. A flashing red right arrow however, would be appropriate if the cross traffic has a green, meaning they can make a full stop and making sure traffic is clear.

I have pondered this question myself here in BC. I've always known that turning left onto a one-way road is legal, even from a two-way road. Highway on-ramps and off-ramps by legal definition are essentially just one-way roads that happen to exit a freeway or merge onto a freeway. However, there is a section of the B.C. MVA that makes me hesitant to perform a left turn on red onto a one-way highway on-ramp where there is a protected Left-Turn Signal (with the Left Turn Signal sign). Section 165 paragraph 3 says: "If at an intersection there is a traffic control device indicating the course to be travelled by vehicles turning at the intersection, a driver must turn a vehicle at the intersection in the manner directed by the traffic control device." So if the left-turn onto the highway on-ramp is controlled by a permissive or protected-permissive signal, then obviously this section doesn't apply. But if there is a signed "Left Turn Signal", then would this section apply? To me, this section likely is referring to traffic control devices such as traffic signals with green arrows. For example, if the traffic signal for your lane has a straight-green arrow then you must not make a left or right turn from that lane.
@traffic.engineer2 жыл бұрын
Alabama and Mississippi had a standard for using doghouse signals for double permissive left turns. This has also been done in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. With the advent of the flashing yellow arrow, this sight may no longer be utilized throughout the US. Alabama has already changed their standard to FYAs. Many of thr cities in Texas have also switched.

A three-section bimodal is permitted if there are height issues. Since there is no height issue on the corner pedestal, a 4-section signal is ideal. States like Arizona and Colorado tend to mismatch with 4-section and 5-section left-turns at the same intersection when such an issue arises.
@sleckrone12 жыл бұрын
There may also have been weight limitations on that mast arm that may have determined it. They may have used the 3-section head on the mast arm due to weight limitations but they put the 4-section head on the pedestal.

@@sleckrone1 True. Especially when the left turn head is farthest from the pole, the moment and torsion on the pole increases greatly between a 3-section and 4-section.
