In the first Joker film, not all the events actually happened, some are set inside Joker's mind, and I hope they go down this route with Harley in the new film. Have the audience route for her happy life with Joker, only for the rug to be pulled out, as the true nature of their relationship is revealed. That Joker is not a good person.

I've been here the whole time from 1992 onward and of course I remember when Harley quickly became part of the mainstream comics universe. And I hated it. The reason why is that they just couldn't wait to turn a woman with some serious mental health issues in a very dangerously abusive relationship with a psychopath … into a bimbo. Instead of being a tool for the twisted clown, they wanted her to be a sex object for adolescent straight boys (and maybe a few not so straight girls?) It felt dirty. It still feels dirty. You're right that RotJ shows clearly that even after TNBA, Harley did wind up back with her "Puddin'" … and it really makes me sad that probably what happened to Tim was likely Harley rationalizing that finally she was going to have the "loving relationship" she wanted with the clown. I think you're absolutely right that he NEVER loved her. Not ever. I wonder though about after he died. I mean I really wonder about that because Harley knew who Batman was. They never found her, had no idea for sure what happened to her. Turned out she survived. But she didn't go after Batman or his family, and it seems like someone that crazy who was still trapped in that space might not have stayed in hiding. And she sure was not happy to find out what the Dee Dees were up to when she bailed them out. If anything, she seemed very upset with them for being involved with the Jokerz. And she didn't appear sooner despite a Joker apparently back from the dead. Why not? Not sure what happened to her after the events of the flashback, but I think she must have gotten some help and let go in time. It's possible the Dee Dees know about Harley's past and that may be what caused them to join the Jokerz in the first place … but maybe not, since it never came up before? Possibly because she "betrayed" the memory of the original? With the death of Kevin Conroy, I don't think we'll ever find out.

(Hey, big Mikey P here. Sorry for taking a bit long. Somehow unfixable server 404 comment errors prevented me, so I'm forced to use a different account to substitute for the time being.) No Nirvana shirt, only Spider-Man, other Batman, and Lumity ones. I fear the 2022 film haters may become right in case the sequels go overboard. Giacchino has been a musical gem since Medal of Honor/Call of Duty and The Incredibles, really. Bruce Wayne's highrise sorta brings into mind Wayne Manor and Arkham Asylum in The Batman 2004. 15:11: Abstracts shouldn't count. Spin-offs can be mixed. I'm one of those folk who are slightly relieved that Gargoyles never got them, simply because they're just too ambitious and costly. The name Hynden is pronounced as "hin-den", not "hyne-den". 40:20: "Mathematical" has become quite an effective exclamation in Adventure Time, by the way. Words can change meaning and definition given time and effort. True, my Multiversal tale seems hilarious, but really, with the right animation, execution, and so on, it'll be like those 80s and 90s anime movies all over again. (Apologies if they felt like gratuitous continuity-strict darker and edgier sequels, though.) Also, I may be able to do the occasional Rosencrantz & Guildenstern or iyashikei, mostly as breather tales. 53:45: *Keyan* Farlander. ...I don't think ALL the Bible is fictional, saying this aside. Well, will try watching the next Flip Side. However, will expect to be spoiled because I don't plan on seeing the actual show yet unless and until positive critical reviews happen. Addendum: Sad how James Earl Jones and Peter Renaday have recently passed away.

Thank goodness you're here. All caught up, so giving up the Harks to the next person that may want to use it as they catch up. My new opening is based on. the great new game. Have either of you played it? Speaking of games, have either of you played Fallout: London? I know Luke doesn't want to review games to not burn bridges, so I'm not expecting a review. I knew you would not reply to all the old posts. They were mainly there to do what I could to the algorithm. Oh, btw it was the latter pronunciation, which you used, I think, on the Totally Schway Podcast. Wide nerd, without that d in nerd. Used to fit me better a 100 lbs or so ago. Mary, Sooner or Poke? Buckeye, here, you can explain to John. As to this episode. Jeffrey Wright also voices Uatu (Ooh-ah-too) in Marvel What If. Enjoyed What If, have you seen it? Pretty quick watch, not perfect, but it definitely has its moments. Really enjoyed him in Westworld. I'm kind of surprised you didn't talk about Andy Serkis's take on Alfred. He definitely came across more along the lines of the Gotham or Nolan films where he clearly had a special ops feel to him and was more in the enabling camp of Alfreds. It might be a fun topic for you at some point, rank the Alfreds. I liked this take. I like stories like this, Batman Year One and Caped Crusader, that deal with the systematic corruption in the film. Have you given any thought to a 1,000 subscriber goal for this channel? Building the BTAS Lego set was my suggestion, but I'm not sure everyone else is as much of a sadist as I am. Though you are almost there. Well deserved attention, you two are such a delight to to listen to. Hope both of you have a good week.

*I missed the last epsidoe about Superman! Gonna watch it next. Here is a copypaste of the comment I put on that to balance out all the dissenting comments about Superman killing Zod (up to whether you read it):* I was fine with Superman killing Zod. It's not like he wanted to. Zod rather literally forced his hand. Innocent humans would've been killed (and probably rather horribly too.) I'd have done the same in that situation and I'm not sorry about that. Superman was clearly very upset about the whole thing, he wasn't an edgelord about it. It's like when I have to kill mites whenever they prey on my chickens. I hate killing but needs must. We are like Superman's chickens. MOS set up the makings of one fine cinematic universe. Shame that Warner fucked it all up in a vain and rushed attempt to catch up with Marvel's universe.

41:03 Better Health or Help or whatever *was* a scam because the "therapists" and "counsellors" weren't, they were just regular people with no training or professional background etc. They had a bit of a clear-out after the scandal about that; notice how they *now* call the therapists and counsellors *"qualified"* in their adverts. Whether that's trustworthy, I've no strong opinion so decide for yourself.

4:50 not just Eartha Kitt & Halle Berry, Catwoman's skin has been dark in animation too, her design in the Harley Quinn TV series is the most prominent current example. Hey guys. Great discussion last time. Looking forward to hearing you talk about my comment from last time and also hearing Mary's thoughts. I'm quite excited for the Penguin series and I loved Colin Farrell in the role,. although for me Burgess Meredith is still the definitive Penguin actor. I will say that the trailers for the show feel a bit too much like the Sopranos but still excited. Oh and in regards to Superman, I meant to say this last time but I have to say that for me so far the best modern Superman is the one played by Tyler Hoechlin in Superman and Lois. I really think they nailed Superman's good-hearted nature and I loved how they depict him struggling with fatherhood. I know you guys haven't checked it out yet and it took me a bit to get to it as well but I was pleasantly surprised that it doesn't take place in the same continuing as any of the previous CW Arrowverse shows thankfully. It's also in my opinion the best DC show they've made in the CW. Really recommend it.

2:25 Batffleck was utterly wasted. He was so good! Just got given often lame scripts (and had a rubbish bat symbol; don't care if it's a Dark Knight Returns reference, looks more like a brick than a bat.) Excellent sequences such as the sex trafficking scene really showcased his potential and how little of it we saw. He didn't get one movie. We just got movies that had him in it. Never did he have his very own. Gotta be a great topic for a Luke essay or a Schway episode or both.

Young Kurt Cobain would've been like "one of my songs in a Hollywood movie?! I say! Simply outrageous!" A hypothetical older Cobain though (had he lived to the present) might be more like "I feel a bit conflicted but ultimately it's a cool film so I don't really mind - just don't put a Nirvana track in the next Disney cash-grab or something!" Not that I knew the guy. He died when I was like 11.

*Chicken news:* 2 new hens were added to my dinosaur collection yesterday. Betti & Wilma are most indignant about it! They've been anxiously pleading with me not to replace them (I would never); Wilma was shouting at the top of her voice today when she laid an egg, wouldn't stop until I collected it. Normally she calls at a more moderate volume and me saying "K, thanks, Wilma; be there in a bit!" out the window will do. At other times they've been berating me like wives who caught their husband cheating. While Wilma was in the coop laying her eggs and I was in the house making myself brunch, Betti jumped up onto the banister that runs from the patio to the garden, probably in an attempt to be closer to me. Very acrobatic! Thankfully I got some good photos of that out the window before she fell off (unhurt.) I let my friend name one of them Doris, the other one is very little but full of character, I have named her Meibel (said same as Mabel.) They have been very nervous so far. Not surprising when Wilma and Betti have both given them the equivalent of a punch in the face (they needed to assert dominance as per chicken culture.) But they are settling in, already less scared of me than yesterday. Wilma and Betti aren't being quite such massive drama queens either (they're seeing their worries about me not loving them any more are utterly unfounded.) *Update:* yesterday (Monday) was sunny and I booked it off work to supervise the hens while I completely segregated them. Wilma and Betti did try to beat them up but I said no. First I needed to use hands but end of the day just my voice was enough. Last night I let the new hens sleep in the coop (with a partition to protect them from Wilma & Betti) and that went well. Today they're all roaming the garden freely as I work from home; the 2 pairs are sticking together but staying away from each other and out of trouble. So far.

This is my favourite Batman film, Paul Dano has a very unique and chilling take on The Riddler! I hope the other 'The Batman' films pay more homage to Batman: The Animated Series like delving into Bruce's compassion as Batman which was perfectly portrayed by Kevin Conroy (RIP to the definitive Batman) and as I've said before, I hope the films introduce Veronica Vreeland and give her that character growth (I'm autistic so I'm very hyperfixated on Veronica Vreeland lol) I'm very much looking forward to the future instalments in the franchise AND James Gunn's take on the character in his DCU! Edit: Gotham City got wet in the flood…it’s completely *useless* now! (Comment it you got the reference)

I'm old enough to remember the Joker from before Harley was introduced to the DC Universe. He was, in my estimation, more frightening, ruthless, intimidating and opaque. Harley tamed him, whether that was her intention or not, and she ultimately outmaneuvered him by individuating herself from him after learning his darkest secrets through an intimate relationship with him of which only she could boast. In a way, if you know her backstory, she got what she wanted in the end.

Hello Luke and Mary, hope you're doing well. Sorry for not commenting last time about Man of Steel, but generally I don't really enjoy talking about things I'm not fond of and that was especially the case with the film. It's not really unpopular to say but the film just didn't connect with me. To give my thoughts on it before I talk about Matt Reeves' The Batman, the film on a fundamental level just didn't feel like Superman to me. One of my least favourite things a writer can do with Superman is focusing too much on the alien and "Super" part and not enough on the "Man" aspect of the character. Man of Steel focused on the idea of "What if Superman was Jesus" (which the film is constantly reminding the audience with its very unsubtle imagery) that his actual personality falls by the wayside. There were glimmers there but it always felt like subtext. It's especially disappointing because for me it wasted the perfect casting of Henry Cavill and all he had to work with was looking stern and the occasional grimace. As an aside, despite how influential John Byrne's take on Superman has been, I really dislike the whole concept of the birthing matrix and Kal-El being the first natural birth in years which was used the film. Also the Superman suit being Kryptonian armour in the film and also in the New 52 is not something I care for and they much prefer it when it's homemade which is why I'm so excited we will at last have the trunks again in live-action. When talking about Man of Steel there is no way to avoid the topic of Zack Snyder and speaking for myself, I have never been a fan. To me he is one of the definitive examples in Hollywood of "Style Over Substance". There is a lot of creativity and masterful camera work in his films but I rarely find the characters in his films endearing or interesting and in general his films just don't appeal to me. I also really dislike the whole muted colour palette of the movie (and really all of his films) and the over abundant shaky cam I find nauseating. I especially didn't care for the way he depicted Lois Lane in the film which was one of my biggest disappointments. Now, I think Amy Adams is one of the greatest actresses of all time, and my God her performance in Arrival is Oscar worthy, but sadly I thought she was a thoroughly unremarkable Lois Lane. Lois Lane's perseverance and integrity fundamental to the character are part of the reason why she is has earned being the pinnacle of a strong female character in comics and a feminist icon. But as is, I never once felt that Henry Cavill and Amy Adams had an inkling of chemistry and was for me, a very poor rendition of what is meant to be the greatest couple in comic book history. The scene of Pa Kent dying because of the tornado has been memed to death and all I'll say is that I don't care for it. I will however say that I thought Michael Shannon was incredible as General Zod and that's coming from someone who generally doesn't like the character. Sadly I can't say the same for the DCEU's Lex Luthor but I'll try not to talk about things that aren't in Man of Steel. Something that is built into the core of the film that I just don't vibe with, is the idea of "How would the world react to Superman existed in the real world", which I think is important to remember when taking into account how Man of Steel came to be. Some don't know this but it's well documented that David S. Goyer (a writer/director I'm also not terribly fond of) had writer's block while writing The Dark Knight Rises and decided to take a hiatus and during his time away he came up with the idea for Man of Steel and took the picture to Christopher Nolan who then recommended Zack Snyder hence why many felt that post Man of Steel, the universe felt very quick to assemble because it was originally meant to be as standalone as Nolan's Batman movies. But yeah, Man of Steel is not a film I hate, but also not one I look back on fondly. I am however unbelievably excited for James Gunn's Superman, especially since I thought that by far the best things to come out of the now dead DCEU were his Suicide Squad movie and Peacemaker. Now, on to The Batman. Obviously there were quite a few people who were apprehensive about the casting of Robert Pattinson due to his role in Twilight, but personally speaking I had never seen or read anything Twilight related and instead I knew him from other films he had done since such as The Lighthouse and Good Time where he was amazing so I was extremely excited. Then it was announced that the main villain would be my favourite Batman villain The Riddler, so I was even more stoked. Come 2022 and I absolutely loved it. I was so glad that we finally had a live-action Batman that truly felt like a detective because frankly that is an essential aspect that had never properly been explored in other Batman films. And I was so pleased to finally have a live-action Batman who actually had a great Batman voice, because Christian Bale's gravely monster voice will never escape my nightmares and I'm not fond of voice modulators for Batman that Affleck had. The brilliant cinematography by Greig Fraser I thought was perfect for Gotham's gothic and architecturally disastrous landscape which really emphasised the tone. Everyone was phenomenal in the film and I am ecstatic to see this Batman continue and thus far this is my favourite live-action Batman (although that could change depending on how he progresses). The whole cast really brought their A game with Jeffrey Wright having such perfect buddy cop chemistry with Pattinson's Batman, Zoë Kravitz nailing the 90's era Catwoman from the comics and with obvious Frank Miller inspirations, Colin Farrell stealing every scene he's in, although it did at times feel a bit too cliche Italian Mafioso, and if I'm being honest, I would have maybe preferred if they had let him use his actual Irish accent. And of course Paul Dano really giving it his all as this take on Riddler. Although while Andy Serkis as Alfred is a great casting, at times it feels like the plot sort of forgets about him. There are some who think that the Bruce Wayne persona was not portrayed well in the film, and that would be correct if he was portraying the playboy persona badly or the movie treated it as a good thing that he was avoiding it, which is not the case. At this point in his life, the Batman persona is all he has and has yet to understand that he needs to be more than just vengeful Batman. That's his entire character arc in this movie and it's something he learns he needs to also use in the future. Now, although I do love this movie, that doesn't mean that there wasn't anything that didn't bother me. First off, I am unbelievably exhausted of exploring Batman's early years, almost as I am tired of exploring highschool Spider-Man. It's such a limiting time frame in Batman's career that has been done to death and often leads to very repetitive story arcs that at this point don't usually offer anything terribly new (looking at you Caped Crusader). Then of course, another issue for me is constantly taking inspiration for live-action Batman from the same stories over and over. It's always: Killing Joke, Dark Knight Returns, Year One, Long Halloween and Hush, all of which are really beginner stories for most readers. I know Matt Reeves mentioned in some interviews Batman Ego being an inspiration but really that was just mild subtext. There were plenty obvious influences from Batman Earth One, namely Martha Wayne originally being an Arkham and its take on Alfred, but that was not a plot point I ever cared for. There there are things from Earth One I think are noteworthy, most notably Geoff Johns' excellent rendition of Waylon Jones, but the ones used in the film was not anything I gravitated towards. And of course, I'm growing rather weary of "grounded and realistic" Batman. I know we'll get a more experienced Batman in a more comic inspired world in James Gunn's DCU, but I view that as a double-edged sword since Damian Wayne will be Robin. Yes Damian sucks. And lastly, I'd be remissed if I didn't mention something that I both enjoyed but is not my preferred take. While I mentioned that I thought Paul Dano gave an amazing performance and the Riddler is my favourite Batman villain, it didn't totally feel like the Riddler to me. Obviously I'm more than open to seeing an alternate take on a character, and the film's Riddler is a good antagonist who really well embodies the dangerous side to vigilantism, but the Zodiac approach is not my preferred take on the character. I just adore the campy pizzazz of the Riddler's villainy coupled with his obsessive need to prove his superior intellect. And I just like it more when Riddler is more obsessed with Batman and their battle of wits than Gotham's corruption. The perfect Riddler for me lies in between the Matt Reeves Riddler, who expertly brought the intensity of the character up to 11 but feels more like an allegory for Gotham's oppressed, and the BTAS Riddler, who had the personality but a poor origin and his motivation was never defined. In other words, the perfect Riddler is the Arkham games' Riddler voiced by Wally Wingert who is in my opinion the definitive voice for the character and take on Riddler's personality and schemes. And to close off, I mean everyone has shared the same sentiment that the worst scene in the movie was the scene with Joker in the cell next to Riddler. It felt very uninspired and tacked on. Also I hate his design. Matt Reeves said this Joker didn't fall in a vat of acid but I'm sorry, how else is what little hair he has left permanently green because he can't dye it while he is in Arkham. The deleted scene with him was kind of neat but it was ultimately unnecessary because it gave away Riddler's motivation too fast in the plot. Now Luke go give your voice a rest. This was only as long as it was because I talked about two subjects which won't happen again.

I don’t know why or where from but I’ve grown up with a Harley and Joker who are the ultimate ride or die Bonnie and Clyde couple (maybe too much Lego Batman? Idk, I’ve still never watched btas so that’s definitely part of it), as a result I hate hate, hate an imbalanced abuser and victim relationship for them, although I think it’s important to tell those types of stories and it’s cool that they did, but with that setup you can’t continuously write a story with these two. Not to mention that it’s just not as interesting, for example Mortica and Gomez, literally the whole point of their characters is because it’s uncommon and more surprising to see a couple that actually LOVE each other. And the Joker being predictably selfish makes him more of an egocentric psychotic than a pure crazy looney. If anything they’re a balanced abuser and abuser relationship, the Joker truly not caring about Harley feels like an assumption rather than the other way around :/

@@MarySusanMears I figured you may of and it's bloody great video, I've shared it 4 times.......am just a silly over the top nerd 🤓 am one that counts EVERYTHING as cannon and with even the 1960 cartoons returning alongside the 1990/2000 DCAU in crossover episodes & films I count the DCAU starting all the way back at those silly 1940's Superman films. It's a personal thing silly but it's how my nerd brain works

That's one of the main problem with nowadays Harley: it seems everyone wants to remove this dynamic from the character. From the comics where Harley lacks any kind of precise characterization to the most recent (and awful) Batman Caped Crusader where Harley is simply another character at this point. Reality is that Harley can't work on her own as a character cause she will, sooner or later, fall again for Joker's tricks

Tbh, I love Jarley, not as a couple's goals sort of thing, but rather thru a story and character standpoint. Harley's relationship with the Joker is like a cautionary tale to me. It's also kind of funny that some shippers (myself included) who ship them because of the interesting dynamic they being forth to a story are thinking the same what if scenarios/ideas of Harley, which is a wish or hope to see them together in a healthy way. I really think that one of the reasons why people still keep shipping them stems from the fact that when they get along, they're great, fun even, but unfortunately we know that's not their relationship all the time in reality. It also kinda hammers the idea of why someone might stay in a bad romantic relationship with someone bad. They see the good moments and cling to it, thinking it'll get better. Bringing back the idea of Harley's story with Joker being a cautionary tale, I love how currently in the comics, Harley is warning Joker's new sidekick/henchwench, Punchline, that being with him will ruin her. Speaking of Punchline, it's unclear if she really likes him romantically, don't get me wrong she's quite obsessed with him like Harley was (being a fangirl), but it seems like she's just using him to get clout/famous. Their relationship looks mostly like a mentor-mentee, despite being introduced as Joker's new girlfriend. Anyways, I love how Harley is now being used by some writers as a voice of caution when the idea of being with (someone like) Joker in a romantic relationship is brought up. Including that to her character as a villain or anti-hero, especially nowadays is imo a great additon. Ngl, I want for there to be a media that reaches the broad audience that shows something like Mad Love or like the "Harleen" comic by stjephan sejic. This comic is a great Harley story. It is a retelling of her origin but in a more serious way. It also combines different concepts/ideas that I love from the numerous Harley origin stories we got before. The bookcover and trailer for that comic alone shows you that it's not gonna get a happy/good ending, despite getting together with the Joker. The Joker 2 movie kinda worries me, it's clearly an alternate univserse, but I feel like it'll wrap once again the perception of the public/general audience 😅. It happened when the Joker movie came out, Joker's my fave dc character and hearing people think that it's the definitive origin or think that's how Joker became the Joker is kinda funny and sad for the lack or better word. It's a great movie don't get me wrong, but yeah. With the sequel having Harley, it'll definitely happen again. I must say though, with how different Arthur Fleck is to the Joker in the comics or other well known media, maybe it'll be a more healthy relationship (as healthy as what a crazy relationship will get that is.)

The origional comics grundy is a good character study in a similar way. He was not a gangster but a guy who was on his way through the swamp to be married when he and his fiancee were robbed. The criminal killed him and disposed of his body in the swamp where nature itself decided to choose him as a defender for it. This is a ritualistic act that would save Grundy but because it was rushed to do so did not happen correctly. He emerged a hulking, mindless zombie instead of a champion for the forces of nature that was intended. It's a case of a good act with good intentions but done the wrong way and thus still a bad act. It would never truly help yhe intended manner so it would have been better if he was allowed to just be let go and find peace despute his happiness being cut short. Because he was resurrected in a manner never intended, his suffering instead was prolonged AND the champion the swamp desired was also lost to it. It's very comparable to the way people have shown poorly thought out and reactionary behaviors to tragedies or threatening discoveries that only make the situation worse. Some good examples are the treatment of people's in the mental health industry like women, homosexuals and nuerodivergent who were being "helped" for thier "provlems" when in relaity they were being controled and mistreated through poor preception/ignorant practices. Another example is with our environmental crisis and the many who support some very poor and often more long term harmful "solutions" presented by politicians who don't actually care or have the proper research done if they can claim it a support in the moment for their votes. Solomon Grundy is a cautionary tale about rash actions and how good intentions don't always equal good results. Being responsible and aware of the situation, even if its one you don't like is important in preventing a worse one. If a situation should be addressed, it should be done correctly or consequences can come. To this day people suffer because social ignorance was presented as medical science and used to "treat" people for problems that weren't actually problems but predjudices on the part of greater society. To this day we still have a looming environmental threat with so much meandering "efforts" that go nowhere because people are not proactively untied but rather allowing minor powers who don't truly care to "handle" things in ways that are not actually taking the full root of rhe issues into consideration for practical impact. We the swamp want to help when we see something as a wrong. We let the powers designed to helps us take over but implemented in the wrong way and get a Solomon Grundy as a result.

It’s crazy how much these episodes made me cry when I really didn’t feel any way about Grundy before then. He just showed up a couple times and that was it. But these episodes changed so much. Without question some of the best in both shows, so freaking mature for a show aimed at kids as well.

I’m not sure why Paul Dini is being praised in this video. If “Romanticizing” these two is a serious problem, then he’s the chief problem. He introduced her to New Earth Continuity with a story that gave them an explicit two sided relationship. It being reciprocal is the main conflict between them in the story, and that was not a one off, while they were not together often in his comic writing, it gets referenced quite a bit that they have an actual (and yes, still pretty toxic) relationship. The takes and movies (SS, Folie a Deux) that go with that idea have a solid basis in his work. I don’t see any criticism directed at that, or him, for some reason.

it's amazing how people got so dumb as to glorify and portray joker and harley as romantic when girl says she wants relationship like harley and joker - push her out of a window on 4th floor

BTAS came on when I was in my 20s. The DCAU was my base exposure to DC comics, and still say they hold up better than most of the live action movies from both DC and Marvel.
