100 year quest has no reason to those scenes. The original FT, we were getting to know the characters and their histories, their weaknesses and strengths and now we know the characters, there's no reason for those anymore

100 Year Quest definitely gives me the same feeling as the post-game of an RPG. Even tougher and greater challenges, even stronger powers, even harder boss fights, but lacking the emotional moments of the main story due to everyone's arcs already being concluded. I've been doing a reread of the series as well as watching the anime exclusive arcs since they're actually canon. I just finished the Starry Sky arc, and so far every arc has had big emotional moments that hit me, even Edolas which I consider to be the weakest one so far. I've been enjoying 100 Year Quest for the most part (except Gold Owl lmao), and I love how the main cast has been treated so far (except Gray), but it just doesn't have those emotional moments.

It's great seeing people talk about this! The anime is very underrated in my opinion. Little moments like Ichika saying how she doesn't want her brother to shoulder the weight of the world alone and Yami saying how he wants to be able to actually protect her now instead of just help her deal with the aftermath of disaster aren't things you get in every story. In fact, I've seen plenty where they just rush through the emotions, but these are the ways that I've grown to care so much for these characters. I love the action too, but getting to know them makes me root even harder for their victories.

I think the issue is that 100YQ is a spin-off, it's ancillary to the main story and is a neat bit of extra story but is not pivotally changing the characters (like the movies). Throughout the main series, each arc would focus on one person specifically and chart their development throughout, which is what made it so gut wrenchingly emotional and hype. Now there's not much character development to be had anymore because it wasn't written that way and it was planned to be ended with the Alvarez arc, the main cast are "completed" characters.

Feel like the stakes were raised to high. The moment the Dragon Gods were said to be on par with Acno I knew the writing could live up to the statement. And every arc in the sequel revolves around one of said dragons and it's always just Team Natsu. So there's no stakes. And yes this is Fairy Tail but the original at least had Phantom Lord, Tenrou and Tartaros were you really felt the characters struggle. That's just nonexistent in the sequel. On top of that,again cause it's Team Natsu, they all went through their emotional character arcs already so there's nowhere to go. Could had done something with Erza and Irene but nothing happened. Honestly Irene hurt the series more than contributing anything. So limiting the cast didn't help

Maybe Merlin got sealed by Chaos since Chaos got stronger in controlling Arthur nowadays and Merlin didnt have any protection from Chaos since she only got blessed by the Demon King and Supreme Deity. Since at the end of this story it would just follow the 12 round table then Merlin would be back by then with Lancelot at Arthur's side and NTR his soon to be wife Guinevere😆

Again, for people who haven't, go read Rave, the major work before Fairy Tail. If the emotional aspect is the itch you need scratched, Rave has it in spades and Mashima does not hold back. I think the main reason those emotional beats are harder to hit in 100 Year Quest is due to the lack of connection to the backstory of our main cast characters. Most of the lore reveals are about the land of this continent our cast isn't from, there's no big backstory being allude to that gives mystery and connections to the dragon gods and their motivations, and new characters aren't around long enough for us to get full arcs with them. I think focus is different as it's about this major quest for Team Natsu to complete instead of the variety that came from the original series where part of it was guild requests, other times it was big events, and others it was just responding to stuff happening. The setting and nature of the quest make it pretty hard for our main cast of characters to connect to on top of the changes in how the story is structured. Take recent anime events, being back in Edolas and revisiting the Edolas Fairy Tail. In 100 Year Quest, it's like a pit stop before moving on to the next point with small mystery to solve that's just flexing the power of the mext dragon god. Now, if this were structured like original series, after the group arrives in Edolas, we would still get to see them interact with the Edolas versions of themselves and make a plan to solve how they arrived in Edolas; however, they would've been shadowed by a minion of say Selene while they were there. This minion would've intercepted them on the way to the palace and had the ability to snatch away a handful of them (say Lucy, Nasha, Edo Natsu, Gray, Greige, and Edo Wendy [maybe Erza if no magic can actually stop her for this 1 sneak attack]). While the captured group is trying to find an escape, the other group would go to the palace and enlist the help of Mystogan and Knightwalker. Edo Lucy would have to begrudgingly ask Knightwalker for help while Mystogan believes that he cannot let this new threat harm his people and they receive mysterious aid from Touka. On the other side, you have the kids interacting with the Earthland version of their parent and the minion revealing that the plan is to take them to Selene via one of her dimensional portals tomorrow. The kids manage to slip away and run into the group searching for them. A brief reunion as the portal opens, the 2 Erzas being the main attack force while the other free those who've been captured. Touka informs them that while they can't get a decisive win her in Edolas, she senses magic beyond the portal that would give them a fighting chance. The Earthland group acknowledges this and throws themselves at the minion to force them through the portal as they say goodbye do their Edolas friends. The rest of the Elentir stuff would happen. Original series Fairy Tail would have something like for the first 10 or so chapters before jumping into the real meat of it. Set up Touka as a grey character of who's side is she on, what does Selene specifically want with Team Natsu, give characters a moment that's emotionally heavy using the Edolas characters like this short interaction is something that leaves an impact on the kids to give them core personality traits. Seriously, if you look at most arcs Mashima has written, very rarely are they straightforward, where what you see in the beginning is what the conflict in the end is going to be. It's because there's a sense of building and forward momentum across the arc that has resolution. 100 Year Quest is written more like 1 large arc which each dragon god being more like the climax of an act as opposed to their own arc. Kinda like if every antagonist in the Grand Magic games was made to be important (image issue, qualifiers, Raven Tail, Garou Knights, Sabertooth, Future Rogue and Dragons)

I don´t agree it doesn´t really needs any bullshit emotions he tried to do that with Athena and what happend? a trash fakeout What Hiro really needs to do is focus on PTSD aspect of Natsu from Chapter 107 character development for Natsu -> any fakeout emotions, Hiro doesn´t have the balls to do any emotional moment without it being a fakeout , Athena proved that and he should create more arcs for Natsu just like he did for Lucy in original series

I like what you trying to say I think EZ, old FT focus more emotional momments and build and learning about new characters and getting attached to the characters and want to see them again but I think dead rock focus more on suspense and mystery and flash backs for characters idk if Mashima will add emotional momments but we will just have to see but so far I see what you mean.
