In this case it is less direct quotation and more by way of allusion, not least to other passages already quoted by Luke in connection with these truths. These include: Psalm 118:22; Isaiah 53:12; Psalm 31:5; Psalm 22:7, 18; and, Psalm 69:21. To these could be added other references that Luke makes to the Old Testament in the book of the Acts, including Psalm 2:1-2, Isaiah 53:7-8, Psalm 16:8-11, and Isaiah 55:3. This is not exclusive list, but shows Luke's awareness of the Old Testament witness to Jesus' death and resurrection, and the preaching of the good news. Other Old Testament passages would testify the same thing. We hope that this is helpful.

Hello. I’m wondering if you can answer these two questions. Was Jesus referring to unbelievers and believers and also when it says cut in two, is that talking about eternal state in hell? Or earthly punishment? Thank you.

Good questions. The second first: the fact that this is the explanation of a parable helps us to understand that these are illustrative or symbolic, so it is a fearful picture of the punishment which comes when the Judge returns (which means that we must reckon with the fact that the reality is far worse than the symbol which represents it-we are meant to be shocked and grieved by this imagery). This helps us to understand the spiritual state of the people represented in the parable: if someone is allotted a portion with the unbelievers, it shows that this person does not belong with the faithful. Although they may appear to be or claim to be a servant, their disobedience to the Master and abuse of the servants reveal that they do not belong to the kingdom of God. Yet there is differentiation-the more knowledge we have of God's will, the greater our responsibility and culpability if we neglect and disobey that will. Remember that when interpreting a parable we must be careful not to press a complete and absolute parallel for every element of the imagery, but rather look for a main point or thrust. We hope that this is helpful.

We are much accursed with busyness and manifold distractions in the 21st century, and we as Christians do need to be reminded that this world is not our home and are pilgrims passing through, so to speak, set apart to serve the true living God. I really enjoy Pastor Jeremy's preaching; truly Christ-centered and, shall I say, Puritan-esque. He is not at all afraid to preach on hell, and he properly balances the promises in God's Word with the warnings in His Word. Sobering and encouraging messages.
