The only reason the studio lights would be harsh going through those translucent (shoot-through)umbrellas is that you have them way too close to the inside of the umbrella. The light doesn't have time to spread out over the entire surface of the umbrella to soften up. You're only using a small portion of the umbrella and the light is harsher when you do that. Just remember to pull the umbrella out away from the flash so the flash has time to spread out over most of or the full surface area of the umbrella. Smaller light sources produce harsher light and bigger light sources produce softer light. You make the umbrellas small sources of light when you have the lights so close to them. All you have to do is pull the light a bit further away from the umbrella and have the umbrellas as close to you as possible without being in the pictures for the light to be the softest it can be. I know this is 4 years ago and you probably know this already but just in case lol.
