The reason the watch industry uses silicon is primarily cost. Alloy balance springs are exponentially more expensive than their silicon counterparts. And, contact friction aside, silicon still doesn't address oxidation, so you're back to lubricates again. Rolex and Grand Seiko's current generation of escapements both have rate issues. This has been flagged in many watch forums. So with respect, the list goes on and on.

I'm guilty of this as well and have often tried to wrap my head around why this is given I'll often spend up to a year searching for the model I want, then finally get it, and then it goes directly in the safe after a few days of wearing it. Maybe it's that many of us were not born in money? Or just feel uncomfortable wearing an expensive time piece daily? Or maybe it's like gold and we think in hard times it's backup money idk. I will say for me at least since I'm drawn to more vintage and neo vintage Rolex model, regardless of the stated service if without paperwork, I assume a service will be required.

I like to collect watches that make me feel good. I have a friend who collects more like a museum where he needs specimens that represent different watch makers, countries of origin, movements, historically significant pieces, etc.... but he has so many he couldn't possibly wear them and often he doesn't even like the watch itself since he's collecting it for a different purpose. I understand his approach but that's not me! I need to wear my watches.... so I limit my collection to just 12 pieces. First and foremost it has to make me feel good. I also don't impulse buy. If I find a piece that speaks to me I let it sit and think about it for a while. There's been many times I thought I liked a watch but after a few weeks I decide that I actually didn't deeply love it. So after 20 years of being into watches I have only ever sold one watch. Because each watch i own I love too much

I've just got home from looking at a second hand Breitling Avenger GMT 45 I was thinking of buying, full box set with owners manual and guarantee card, but with the seller I took it to a gold merchant shop next to his shop and weighed it on their digital scales, it was 20g heavier than the specifications given on the Breitling website for the exact same watch with the same reference number and same strap. The caseback was also on crooked instead of straight while the seller said it had never been opened or serviced etc. Clones or fakes are usually lighter than genuines so I'm not sure why this watch is 20g heavier than it should be, but it all raised major red flags with me, I didnt buy it obviously.

Hey Alix! Hope you're having a great week. Question; ran across several websites that specialize in "replica Rolex watches". It blows me away at how they get away with it all (you've probably seen them). Seems like patent and copyright law would come into play, big time. Thoughts? Thanks for your time. Can't wait for your next episode!
@TalkingTimepieces7 күн бұрын
It is illegal to use the Rolex name, but basic design cues are harder to defend. I have several episodes where I complain about fakes. At least an homage has the name of the manufacturer on it

@@TalkingTimepieces Thanks Alix. Most likely, I'll never own any timepiece as high-end as the Rolex, but I still enjoy looking at them. The thought of actually purchasing and owning a fake or 'replica' of one is sickening to me. Oh well! Different strokes for different folks!

As far as anti-magnetism resistance; remember, Omega uses the silicone hairspring, giving their watches unmatched anti-magnetic resistance. i.e. Rolex’s Milguas is touted as their engineer/scientist preferred model because of it’s 1K gaus resistance. Omega watches with their silicone hairspring are able to boast 15K gaus resistance, so it really becomes an unfair fight, right out of the gate. *I think that Omega patent has just about run out so expect others to jump on board with the superior technology.
@TalkingTimepieces8 күн бұрын
Actually Ulysse Nardin was the first to use a silicon hairspring in the freak, even Rokex has one. The patented stuff in a new Omega is the Daniels coaxial escapement. You are correct the Milgauss uses legacy faraday-cage tech. A lot of IWC pilots had a cage as well
@psidvicious7 күн бұрын
@@TalkingTimepieces Clarifications on the technicals much appreciated. In the video you had questioned the function of the inside cover; if it was part of an anti-magnetism effort. I would submit that it would not be because of the already inherent anti-magnetic properties of most all Omegas, due to the hairspring used. I like this Omega watch but I don’t love it. It just has a bit of a clunky look to it. I much prefer the limited edition, Omega Split-Second Speedmaster produced, the 311.30.44.51.01.001. It just has more of a classically cleaner look, without the hard angles this one has. But that could easily just be personal preference.

One of the top watchmakers in the US addressed this issue in an interview with Teddy Baldassare. He said you only need to wind watches one or two times a year. He also said he had watches which hadn’t been serviced for a lot longer that 7 years and they work just fine.
