They're so beautiful and gentle. Me and a best friend did a 12 day, camp trip with our sea kayaks, 12 years ago. To this day we've done and still do many 5 to 7 day camp trips. We had 4 orcas, swimming around us, playing, spy hopping, and swam inches under our kayaks. We tied them together, so we wouldn't drift into their area. You just don't realize how massive they are until you see them free. They knew exactly where we were, and didn't even make a wake. 🐳 🌊 🙏

I "met" J pod back in '95 before the distance limits were in place with whale-watching boats. They swam right under the boat, looking up at us, investigating everything. It was a spiritual experience I will never forget. This is the true way to see them. Never pay to see them in captivity.

The law already requires that all boats stay 300/400 YARDS away from the Southern Residents. But if they come towards a kayak, you can just stay put. You cannot intentionally put yourself in their path. As for the Center for Whale Research boat, pretty sure they are exempted, as they are studying the population.

I'm no expert but I've read that each set of color patterning is unique so they photo and study them.
@OrcaKayakingTours
@OrcaKayakingTours Жыл бұрын
Correct! Each individual Orca is unique an typically has their dorsal fin and saddle patch logged in scientific catalogue for reference. Sometimes on our tour we know the Orcas are coming ahead of time and base of last know location and velocity we can determine if its a similar group that others have reported.

This is the most studied population of whales in the world--each individual is well-known to researchers, and those who study them regularly can ID the pod a long way off.

Two summers ago I did a your with Sea Quest Kayaking Tours and it was the best experience of my life, even though we didn't get a chance to meet a pod of orcas, we saw eagles, porpoises, and harbor seals! Wonderful experience and can't wait to go back!

Watching this video sparked my interest for guiding in the San Juan Islands! This video is really well done, thanks Shane for capturing kayak trips with Sea Quest. I've been on trips with Martine before and I appreciate how Sea Quest tours also show us inter tidal life, birds, and other marine mammals.

This is a great video! Spieden Channel is my favorite place to watch the sunset because of the wildlife you can see. It's a great place to see porpoises feeding and I've seen humpbacks at sunset a couple times. Truly spectacular!

Hello +KayakAngler 16, we often troll for salmon from our kayaks. The routes we use on our tours are optimized for encountering orca whales and since the orcas eat almost exclusively salmon these will be the best fishing locations, too. Check out guide Elizabeth's video of a Pacific giant octopus in the shallows beneath our kayaks. Although the largest species of octopus in the world, this young one is nervous near the kayaks. Octopuses can change both color and texture of their skin to match the algae on the rocks.

Fantastic whales and weather continue in the San Juan Islands. Yesterday's afternoon tour saw the J-pod orcas as soon as they arrived at the launch beach! This is a great time to take a kayak tour before the tourist season begins and our most senior guides are leading the kayak trips. Our Expedition Director, aka the Orca Goddess, Martine Springer has been leading the majority this spring. You can see her featured in most of our online videos. #KayakTours #KillerWhales

What a respectfully quiet way to visit orcas while protecting their ears and their ability to hear prey for survival.
