Harbor seals can be very curious and bold, especially when young. Check out this video of a yearling seal investigating the rudder of our kayak guide and videographer Elizabeth "Buzzy" Robinson.
Over 5000 harbor seals live in the San Juan Islands and we see them on all of our Washington kayak trips, usually in large numbers. They eat a huge variety of prey, from giant octopus to salmon to herring. Harbor seal males can grow to be over 300 pounds but the youngsters and females are half this size. They are generally quiet, low-key neighbors but during the August mating season some fights break out among the big males with lots of fluke slapping and biting. In turn, the harbor seals are a favorite meal for the Bigg's killer whales that cruise the San Juan Islands.
This harbor seal interaction was filmed on a kayak tour in the San Juan Islands of Washington state. Our kayak trips at Sea Quest Expeditions are an excellent way to see, photograph, and learn more about these cute, bewhiskered predators!
