The two methods that my friend taught me about weight control 1 vary the height of initial position of bowl before the backswing. If it is a long jack, place the bowl a bit higher. That will automatically increase the extent of pendulum action 2 Vary the speed during backswing. If it is a long jack, increase the speed of backswing I find these 2 techniques okay.

Surely the heavier Bowl will have left the ramp with a bit more speed than a lighter Bowl, but not a lot in it and not worth having a mass brawl over it 😈

Hi, I take a step forward when playing outdoor bowls, I take a static/fixed stance when playing indoor bowls! I find that when you take a step forward when playing indoor bowls, you end up with mixed results!

@@alancarlyon340 I do the same. I am better using the fixed stance, less to go wrong, but outdoors early in the season I need to take a step forward to get enough momentum to reach a long jack. 👍

At my club we have several visual impaired bowlers and we have thought about getting a line from T to T, so the V.I. bowlers wouldn't need to put a string every time they play. Unfortunately this was not put in place. At the moment when have an internal tournament, they stay on the same rink, so they don't need to put the string down every time they move rink. If there was a line on every rink, they would be able to change rinks, like everyone else. I wish my county would bring respotting the jack in county league games, as they are 23 ends including the 2 roll up ends, without the any dead ends. I have played in a game when we had 3 dead ends and that must added at lest 30 minutes to the match. I have played in a tournament at club without the respots, so the jack was placed on T when an end was killed. Which was good for me, once we were 4 or 5 shots down, but had a bowl on the T. It took me 2 attempts to kill the end, which resulted in us winning the end and I think we went on and won that game. I must add this tournament was for people with disabilities, I play from a wheelchair and my 2 team mates were V.I. bowlers

Another good video, thanks. One thing confuses me are the spots going up the centre, the last one is a different “length” to the rest why is that and also can you work the minimum legal length of the jack using the centre spots (again the spot furthest from the T is not an equal spacing. May be this could be the subject of one of your videos. Again thanks for your channel.

One extra thing I should have mentioned is that if the jack is delivered but goes into the ditch, the other team get to place the jack, and mat, wherever they want it. Not send it back to be delivered again by the opposing team. Again, the is simply to save time. Sorry I missed that. ☺
@DuncanH11

At our club if the jack is delivered into the ditch it is sent back for the other team to move the mat and resend the jack (but you still bowl first). If the jack is thrown (is that the right term?) by the team again into the ditch then it is placed on the T. I believe there are two associations with different rules, is that right? (a video explaining how there are different rules would be great). Thanks for the video.

I’ve watched your videos since I first started two years ago and have found them very helpful. What I’ve found fascinating with bowls is how people’s delivery are so don’t compared to other ball sports. As you say weight is very difficult to teach/learn and I think people need to watch all different suggestions, practice and then develop what suits them then stick with it practicing to make it consistent. Personally for me I’ve found varying how far I step forward for distance (3 lengths - short, medium or long) then as you describe vary amount of “push” (excellent description) slightly for the finer adjustment. Thanks for all your videos.

That is interesting, I thought all indoor clubs had markers. Do you play full games, or is there a time limit? If you do not have any time limit games then you don't need markers, but otherwise I would have thought they were essential.

@LawnBowlsforFun Thanks for replying Alec. We play in mini leagues off six teams, triples, 2 hour timed game slots. Maybe it's the unique nature of the club. It's a six rink outdoor club with an additional 3 rink indoor facility. Don't believe there's many other clubs out there that have both outdoor and indoor bowls facilities ! I'll ask the question regarding dot's to someone more experienced in the club the next time I'm down.

Increasing the back swing is not the answer particularly indoors or on an artificial surface........the key to weight control is the amount of follow through......and this is much more controllable.....

I know some agree with what you have said, but a lot think it is very important. I gave three options in the hope that one or more may help new bowlers, but there is no guarantee of course. I have always varied back swing, especially outdoors, where the variance can be more than indoors. To be honest I could have gone a lot deeper into it, but I wanted to keep it short and easy to follow. Thanks for the input, it is always good to hear different viewpoints.

At my club we have a few visual impaired bowlers and the ones who can see the jack, find it easier to see the white jack compared with a yellow jack. There isn't so much issue about white shoes obscuring the jack, as there more and more coloured shoes being worn now.

I have only just started playing indoor bowls, the weight is the most difficult to master, I find I may bowl reasonably ok for half a game, then I go down hill and find it more difficult to work on my delivery, my woods may end up 2 or 3 yards short, and with a slight adjustment my woods would end up 2or3 yards past the jack, its an understatement to say its frustrating
@MrRadiorobot
@MrRadiorobot 21 күн бұрын
A good practice drill is to deliver your first bowl while not using a jack, bowling to a short length at first really helps, you just want the bowl to come back to approximately the centre line, that first bowl then becomes your target, bowl your second bowl along the same line using the same weight as before, hopefully it will come to rest near the first bowl, Do the same with your third bowl and so on, small adjustments when necessary ...this develops muscle memory and also stops you from being distracted by the jack, a common mistake is looking at the jack too much instead of your aim point and then you end up bowling narrow... Placing a playing card on the carpet a few yards ahead of you on the delivery line can help, the intention being to deliver the bowl across the card and down the delivery line...this can help with the process of learning visualisation and repeatedly finding the same line. Hope this helps.

I have found at our club everyone has their own delivery style. As I have straighter running bowls I like to visulise the line to the jack then draw my eye back to a target point two or three metres in front of the mat. Most top players seem to use this method.

@@grahamsmithbsc yes, I agree, everyone has their own method. If it works then there is no reason to change. I do much the same as you, but stick to two metres for indoors. New bowlers benefit from this method but some prefer to do something different which as long as it works then stick to it. 👍

How would you address your aiming point with mat position and Jack length? If you're standing on the outside, inside or centre of the mat, the aiming point will need to move. Jack length will also change the aiming point. I think it's a really good method for beginners to learn about correct line, but personally would struggle to focus on an aim point that close to the mat when considering other factors like mat position and jack length.
@LawnBowlsforFun
@LawnBowlsforFun Ай бұрын
@@davidthomas3006 it is fair to say there is a lot more to it than I have covered, but this is aimed at beginners and so I keep it simple. You are of course correct, especially for jack length, but my first concern is how many new players tend to bowl narrow, so ensuring they have an aiming point about 15” to the left or right of the second dot (two metre mark) ensures that they will be roughly in the correct place with regard to line. Of course, this will not suit every player, some still prefer to have an aiming point much further down the rink, or even the end of the rink, which is fine, I just find new players who struggle with line indoors tend to benefit from trying this method. Good points though, and thanks for the reply. 👍

So he made himselve an virtual aiming point next to the jack. He said that the aiming point and weight are all in 1 point. Easier to control your weight ; because you can see it when you do your delivery.

@ can’t argue with that, he is one of the best players ever. It is surprising how many top players use different methods, but they find something works and stick to it. @@petersaunders747 Hi Peter, at our club we did make sure we followed the guidelines provided in the crystal mark fourth edition rules, page 15, 6.1.5 which in a nutshell means the nearest part of the groundsheet is placed on the mat line, so the 2 metre line, so that the front of the bowls mat is in line with the nearest part of the groundsheet so players bowl on the groundsheet itself. I did see once the mat placed on top of the groundsheet but that is wrong. I hope that makes sense. Obviously the groundsheet cannot be moved once placed. @@alberttickle1106 yes, the rules do state that, but too many players tend to linger a bit too long I’m my opinion. I have got into the habit of leaving the mat once the my bowl is about half way down the green, but only stepping to one side and I still watch what my bowl is doing. At least the next player can start to position himself if he wants to. I think I started doing that as often in evening games the light starts to go and I like to get on with the game. @@RichardBloyce since the bowl only turns when it starts to slow down, and on shorter jacks it has less time to do so, the line can be narrower, slightly.
