S110v is not difficult to sharpen its a fantastic high performance stainless that has so much misinfo surrounding it because of one specific youtuber and it's someone I very much like his videos and have bought custom knives from him but he really killed s110v for a lot of people. That person is supersteelsteve, he spoke very poorly of it and hated on it badly and that rubbed off on the community and much info he spoke on was just wrong.
@SpartanJohnsКүн бұрын
I don’t know who that is or what he said about the steel. If someone does not like something and voices an opinion about it then that person is not the issue. The rest of youtubers who mindlessly regurgitate information are. I stopped believing what most youtubers say a long time ago because apparently everybody is selling something. To your comment: i also think it is not difficult to sharpen by itself. But if you compare it to k390 or Cruwear, it is more finnicky. When it comes to sharpening many youtubers claim to know what they are doing and understand a lot. But if you just listen carefully you will recognize where the information originated from.

For people that don’t like the beak at the end of the handle or they aren’t a big fan of FRN yet still want something very lightweight - AWT scales. It removes the little cartridge liner, adds a second washer, and the handle profile is a bit more “open” without the belly curve & beak.

I've tried to carry my Schrade knife just like the Buck 110 but I find it too heavy on my side while driving a truck after carrying a much lighter knife for so long . not that I'm a woos or anything . just like my knife in my pocket. EDC at work is cold steel knifes. several models. still I collect Bucks .
@SpartanJohns7 күн бұрын
I like the Buck 110. But as a work/abuse folding knife, the CS Airlite was my favorite. Slim, sturdy, very lightweight and has a good steel for abuse(cutting drywall, wires- it will hold an edge and is easy to fix when damaged) I don’t mind weight/bulk as ling as it carries well. It a depends. I carry my folders in my pocket. Even if most come with a pocket clip nowadays i don’t use the clip. It really depends on what you like/get used to. I could never really get used to belt sheaths for folders, but then again i never really tried a good one.

So what you are saying is that you are so weak that listening to something you don’t like, or which is not made to stimulate you in particular, can lower your testosterone? Are you easily offended by other people’s opinions? Do you tend to glue your hands to stuff? I support your decision in “changing the channel”. You can be whatever you choose to be. I used an Edella K390 working 14/14 in the Gulf of Mexico for a year, never oiled it and no signs of rust. I abused & neglected a Police 4 K390 for 3 years, only cleaned with Dawn & water & no rust. At 600-1200 grit & stropped on 1 micron diamond it holds a cutting edge for a LONG time. I patina’d my PM2 K390 blade with apple cider vinegar and it’s beautiful!
@SpartanJohns28 күн бұрын
Thanks for sharing that! What i noticed with k390 and other steels in this class was that the patina they take is very different than what steels like 1095 do. The patina on mine mainly came from cutting food at first and very little after that but it kept getting slightly darker. I never had any rust on it and it does not come off easily when cutting. I kept it sharp with only a strop and the BRKT stropping compound for about a month. I noticed no damage and very little loss in cutting aggression. I don’t recommend forcing patinas on such steels. If done i would still keep it off the edge because it can start to form rust which will move in from the apex on. Then you get micro chips and have to remove more steel. What i found was that just wiping in dry on my sleeve is enough to keep rust from forming. It is a very forgiving steel, when it comes to use and sharpening. I am thinking that is the reason why so many people like it. Once again: thanks for sharing your experiences with it. I always find such real life/work experiences to be the most valuable ones. I mainly test and carry but it is not the same as actually using a knife for edc activities as i really do not have a need to do lots of cutting.
@xpig33228 күн бұрын
@ I actually thought about that before I forced the patina 3 years ago on the factory edge and stropped it off, I’ve noticed nothing negative on the edge. I inspect my edges with 40X-120X lenses.

Hi Denis, I own a Garberg (as I mentioned before). Watching your thoughts here (at the rounded off exposed tang bit). I was wondering, would the 90° sharpened exposed tang not be usefull in carving out the spoon part of a wooden spoon? I never tried it, but I was just wondering. FYI, I havent bought the Cold Steel 4Max Scout nor the Voyager yet, II'm still in the balance between want, need, my usage and strengths of both knives. Last motorcycle camping trip we did, my brother brought his Skrama 200 and I used my Garberg. I still want a folding chopper/batoner though, just havent decided which one yet. Kind regards, Alain
@SpartanJohnsАй бұрын
Hi Alain, You mean use it as Felix showed on the Venture? I never tried it with the Garberg but i did try it with the Venture. It is doable but you need a lot of patience and some practice. I think there are better ways of carving the bowl of a spoon. Felix showed a cool way a few months ago. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2aWkqhnhd6FbMUsi=lGswmVD-r7x9lldV I think this way is much more practical. Depending on the wood you can do it in 5 minutes. Regarding the 1 knife for camping: sure a folder like the 4maxscout or the voyager are nice to try out and play with. And as before, i could not say which one would be better. If you still intend to carry the Garberg then maybe the Voyager would be better as it offers the larger blade. But if you say: i want something to replace the Garberg…the 4 max scout with an angle change might be the better option. Skrama’s are nice. Never had one but a friend has one and i held it. Seems to be that “one tool” option. That and a small victorinox folder…what morw do you need? But yeah..a chopping folder… Well…i do hope you find the right combination for you. Watch Felix’s video! You might like that method. I did!

Roomy enough for a day hike in the outdoors or sightseeing in the city. What i liked most about it was the durability. It rubbed against trees and branches for years and still no visible damage. Great video. In one of his videos, Cutlery Lover mentioned something about 'budget steel'. I think he was talking about AUS8. He said something like if you work outdoors and you use your knife a lot, sometimes it's better to use softer steel. They lose their edge quicker but they're easy to sharpen and if you hit any hard object, they tend to fold instead of chip. It makes a lot of sense.
@SpartanJohns2 ай бұрын
Thanks! Glad you liked the video. Choosing the right steel for your cutting tool, imo, should be based on what you cut and how comfortable you are at sharpening. Softer steels might be good because they are easier to sharpen with ceramic stones however if you use even medium quality diamond stones and understand a bit about cutting geometry and sharpening the differences are so small that it does not make sense to not choose the better steel. What i wanted to show and say here was that even such a steel like s110v which people say is “chippy”, will only break when misused, which is what happed to this one. I misused it and the tip broke. But it broke far less than expected. Nothing against “softer” steels. With a proper cutting geometry and depending on what id being cut, the differences in edge retention between something like vg-10 and s110v might not even be noticeable.

@SpartanJohns2 ай бұрын
I had the Forester. Great for bushcraft! The saw is superb. As for abuse…depends on what you mean. As it is a folder…if you use it as such it will last you a long time. If you try to split wood with it(batoning)..that would be a bad idea. It might withstand it, it might not. But if you use it to cut wood, carve it, make notches, make feathersticks, cut rope, food, packages, cardboard…the blade will do an excelent job. I thin out the grinds on my vics. So the cut better. This is also how they hold an edge much better. But not if you abuse it, pry with it or put shock into the ecuation(batoning, chopping)

The Ganzo 729 is an rival of the PM2. The Spyderco is not really better but way to much overpriced. The lock should not disengage so there is a flaw. Mine has anoval hole and was bought in 2024. Batoning you are supposed to do on an non locked blade. The problem of the Ganzo brand is that they went up in price big time so this costs now around 24$, allmost as much as an original Ontario RAT1 on sale on eBay and more as somo Coast with an similar blade. Actually some models of Coast si ilar in function, size and blade shape but with 7Cr17 stainless steel cost allmost half as much as these Ganzos. Chinese products have become incredible expensive lately and can not really compete anymore against american brands like Coast. Chinese products are about to price them outof the market as it seems. The Ganzo 729 is a very good and excellent knife with its 440C steel but overpriced and should cost no more than 15$. I see and own some ukrainian knives in 440C which cost 9$ with close up quality to Ganzo. These Ganzo costs in production not more than 5$ or less as same steel can be had from other brands for 7$. So the margin or US sanction tarifs over chinese commie produce is around 200% of the initial production costs in China.
@SpartanJohns2 ай бұрын
To be honest i stopped thinking about the “fairness” of it all a long time ago. Companies charge what they can and we can only choose to buy or not. As for the cost of production… if the design is new or even adapted that is also a process which costs money. So it has to be considered. As for batoning…this is a test. And ganzos can take it. Look up my g720 video. This is why i like Ganzo knives to this day
