The only big thing I see wrong with Johnny was his neck looked too thin to me.

I think you did a really great job on both characters, and the breakdown itself was really informative, thank you so much! Seeing the artstyle condensed into a stylised sphere was eye-opening, such a cool way to show every detail you need to know! I don't know if this is common practice in the art community, but it's the first I've seen it and it really clicked with me, so thank you again!

doing all of that work remind me of college days, Nice work ma dood you did a fantastic job breaking the technique down, and executing, one more thing to add. if you look at most of shinkawa's art, even during posing there is this Fluidity that comes from his brush strokes that kinda dictates the flow of the pose, his line of action is extremely important to show dynamic striking poses in his work. maybe a thing to keep in mind! over all, you did really fantastic ma dood!

5:50 I use decorator's round sash brushes for large scale work, they're similar in appearance to the one Shinkawa uses here, but possibly more robust, will take more punishment and more likely less expensive to buy.

Awesome work! You nailed the general vibes really quickly and even started adding your own flair to it. The only note I'd have for the Johnny+V final work is that you're missing that color contrast from the original. If you wanted to revisit it, I think adding some neon rim lighting on V (between the characters) would really bring in the Cyberpunk feel and help you get closer to the OG MGS art.

I think the main issue is you never really nailed the anime art style. His art looks so anime and even though your art style matched his relatively well in medium, it didn't look anything like how he draws people.
@cmr207911 күн бұрын
I like inking with a brush because it's so chaotic. If you mess up, you have to either deal with it or toss the drawing in the trash. Sometimes dealing with it leads to something that is a lot more interesting than what you had planned. It's like you're reacting to the drawing while you create it.
@joshdartist11 күн бұрын
Diluting ink is the right way to go, the brush you're using in the 2nd attempt for the big areas isn't serving you as well as a nice plump watercolor (fluffy) brush would. I'd pour the ink and some water into a small dish, and add water for lighter washes. And really load a watercolor brush up, then let yourself get expressive in the shadows. Great progression on the pieces as a whole, and a wonderful exercise attempting to render in the fashion of another artist!

The metal gear art style is actually what got me into drawing and painting. ALOT if not the majority of my works follow the principal of a rougher style. I specifically draw and paint alot of things in regards to mexican culture. History,Gods backgrounds whatever i like them to have a rough look to them it compliments the ascetic very well IMO.

Instead of starting inking the details he proceeds blocking the big shadows areas with big brush, after that he goes to to medium brush and at the end he add details in areas (black or white ink), just in case of it is too abstract, add at the point that makes clear the local geometry. It’s a game of you change to a smaller brush in the case of it is impossible do a smaller needed shapes with the actual brush. He never draw an element like an eye, he paint the block of shadows using primitives. The final details with smallest brush is added carefully just to indicate something like a beard, but he never try render anything (if with 4 strokes looks like a beard, so he stops to add detail there).

Big to little brush process, possibly something he learned while at the school for western painting. I was taught to begin with 'broad strokes first' at art school too.
