My answer to "what do you want to be when you grow up" when I was a kid was "artist for club penguin". Although that dream fell through for obvious reasons, the outlet and inspiration drawing penguins provided to me as a small child was priceless.

I never comment on videos, but I'll do it here. I'm a teenager totally self-taught with Adobe Illustrator, and now have 3 years of experience. Even after many awesome projects and experimentations, I have always search around for how to achieve the Club Penguin art style. It's amazing that with 5,000 views I got this recommended. Thank you very much for the video.

Love this video! I signed up for Club Penguin in late 2009, and IMO, the gradual progression of the room style guide was noticeable as well.

2005-2008's artstyle will forever be in my heart and is objectively peak. 2008-2010 is still good and very much acceptable. But after that it fell off a cliff imo. Not to say that the artists were bad. but in the sense that it lost it's charm, the increase in "quality" didn't serve to benefit the feel of the game. Chris' style was so iconic, and it felt cozy; perhaps in large part due to nostalgia when I reminisce nowadays, but I really felt it was something special even at the time. If there's ever a metaverse, I think humanity can agree that it needs to be in Club Penguin. Get Chris back, make it first person; I wanna live there.

The creators thinking about the age the penguins appear to be is so interesting because when I was a kid (8-11) I assumed all the penguins were older than me, even during the "toddler-like" phase. I never thought about age specifically but I just assumed the penguins in the catalogues, the established characters like Rockhopper and Aunt Arctic, and the secret agents were all teens or adults. I wonder if anyone else interpreted them this way? Perhaps I assumed because everyone was older than me at the time. But it's interesting how much thought they put into the art style and how they hoped it'd be interpreted and how some children playing it at the time actually interpreted it! Actually I don't even think I was thinking about age when I saw the art style changes I only thought "different but cute!"
@estela597325 күн бұрын
yeah i definitely thought of them as older since they all have jobs and stuff.

Fantastic video! Honestly as someone who has documented a lot of Club Penguin side and talked to a few people (mostly on the music side), it's always really interesting seeing different sides like the art, tbh Club Penguin has one of my fav art styles around. Also I appreciate you covering all the eras and not glossing by some of the later years, which I tend to see a lot in videos like these. Also minor thing regarding the AS terms, I've seen that a lot of people just use it to mean Art Style 1-3 now due to the actionscript thing not being accurate. (most of Club Penguin was in ActionScript 2 even when it first launched and ActionScript 3 was used as early back as 2010 and basically was the main language by like 2012 so I never thought it worked, I personally just go with the term Era 1-3 but I do quite like your classifications, especially with mentions of how they're not super concrete and have a lot of overlap which is something I've realized, also being super nitpicky you could argue 2014 tended to have a slightly different look, mainly noticeable with the more detailed lighting, but that's just me being nitpicky and idk if it would count lolol) Also really nice job on the art as well! I will say that could you maybe mention the Club Penguin music you used for the video specifically? I can help you provide specific credits for songs in the description if you want since I have everything documented.

I discovered your channel with the Sonic video, and I was surprised to see another so soon! I really appreciate the amount of detail you go into in these videos. It's genuinely a great starting point for emulating these artstyles. I played Club Penguin for years as a kid. Very big part of my childhood. It's so cool to hear about the thought processes behind how the artstyle evolved over the years. Massive props for actually going back and improving upon the artworks you did based on the critiques you received! I was hoping you'd do it, but I wasn't expecting it. You truly went above and beyond with the effort you put into them.

the modern era post card… it’s so good, it’s making me miss something that never happened i guess by 2015 they were aware that they didn’t have much time left so they stopped doing redesigns and most of the game was in this weird old and new combination (i feel like if club penguin continued like normal, the minigames, post cards etc everything would’ve been remade in the new art style)
@safenobisonho1549Ай бұрын

Another banger video my dude!! Every one of these videos it shocks me how much you nail each style lol It was super interesting to see the feedback you got too, always insightfull to get notes from the artists themselves If it ever interested you, it would be sick to see a video breaking down the Danganronpa art styles, the differences in the mainline games' art style can be really subtle but it would be really cool to watch a proper breakdown of what differenciates each game's signature look^^ Keep up the amazing work!!!!!!

This was an incredible video and such an insight to one of my favourite childhood games. I played between 2008-2013 and my dream as a kid was always to work for club penguin. It’s so great that you managed to get personal interviews with both Chris and Ryan, props to you for having such confidence to reach out. I’m currently in my last year of uni studying Illustration and it is surreal to hear my old role-models discuss illustration terminology when now I am of the age to actually understand this sort of stuff :’) Brilliant postcards btw, I think you nailed each penguin era!
@estela597325 күн бұрын
thank you for this interview, it's actually super interesting to know how decisions are made in big projects in more depth. it's also an important reminder on how club penguin wasn't (necessarily) changed as the years went by just because of that "disney is purposely ruining our childhood game for profit!!1!1'!" narrative but also because there was technical thought put into by actual artists who were trying their best to keep the game modern and alive. that means, it's always good to hear and remember the real, normal people involved in creative processes in order to avoid black and white thinking like some youtubers do lol. the postcards look sick btw

The reason why the old style is better is because it's not professional. And that's good because it's personal and has individual thought! Feels like something that is uniquely Club Penguin. That 2nd guy is a technically very knowledgeable artist and knows what makes a good drawing. BUT you lose the original styles charm and now it becomes just another generic product for kids. If he was able to direct the artists better on expanding each individual artists strengths then it would be the right evolution. However, I'm assuming Disney (or could just be him) had a mandate for competent and consistent styles throughout. Ah well, that's just the unfortunate realities of expanding too fast as a team.
